About John Schwinghamer

I always wanted to own a hotel and this about as close as it gets. My wife and I live next door and we enjoy meeting people from all over the world. I also believe that we offer a great value to travelers. We've made our apartments up as if we were renting them ourselves. We pride ourselves on being efficient and running a very well organized business and we try to make every aspect of your stay with us pleasant.

John Schwinghamer purchased this apartment in 2001

Why John Schwinghamer chose Montreal

This is a great area, there are good restaurants and we are very close to the subway system (called Metro) so we can be downtown in minutes. We are also very close to the Atwater market where there is great food and restaurants. We are also minutes from the Canal which has great bike paths and walking areas that lead to the Old Port of Montreal.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We loved everything about this charming apartment! The owner was so easy to deal with, and very accessible to answer all questions. He even took time to install the air conditioner while getting ready to leave the province for his son's wedding! The apartment is immaculate, meticulously maintained and well equipped for everything you need. The outdoor deck and barbecue were a huge bonus, as was the washer and dryer. Beds were very comfortable and the deep soaker tub (with shower) was lovely. The only thing I'd ever add to this great place is a small coffee table in the sitting room - so we could have a place to lay our glass of wine at the end of the day! The location is excellent as well - this was my first visit to Montreal, on a cross-country trip, and it is quite easy to access travelling east on the Trans Canada Highway. It is just around the corner from a Metro stop, which was wonderful to visit all parts of Montreal. Lots of great little restaurants in the area as well - we ate at the Greenspot Diner (good diner food) and The Burgundy Lion Pub (amazing menu! highly recommended). There is also an IGA just up the road, great for supplies. And also quite close to the great Atwater Market, which we really enjoyed visiting. The canal is very nearby also, and is great for walking. We stayed 4 nights in Gallery #2 apartment, and would very definitely return. We highly recommend staying here!

Quiet street in great location!

  • 5 out of 5
Great apartment! Very clean and well kept. Many thanks to John and Jane for their warm welcome and supply of fresh Montreal bagels! The owners were always available if needed. Well organized local information and wireless internet on site. Quiet location close to Atwater Market, the Lachine canal, and downtown. Recently renovated and plenty of space for our 16 month old to roam. We visit Montreal often and the apartment was perfect for our family gathering (fully equipped kitchen). We're planning to rent the unit again for upcoming visits.

very nice stay!

  • 5 out of 5
The place is comfortable, clean and cared for by the owners who live next door. John & Jane were attentive, gracious, meeting us for our late arrival with bagels for the next AM. The place is convenient to Montreal's great Metro system. They have four passable bikes to rent as well. A memorable destination!

Excellent Accommodations

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed at the Gallery 2 apartment in September 2014. The apartment was everything that was described and we were very satisified. John and Jane were quick to answer any questions before and during our stay in Montreal. We were greeted upon arrival to Montreal bagels and cream cheese and a walk through and discussion of not only the apartment but of what to do and where to go in Montreal. We found the apartment very clean and up to date. The apartment is in a nice neighborhood and it is a safe building. The subway is easily accessible, a short 5 minute walk, and downtown Montreal is about a 15 minute subway ride. There are lots of great restaurants that offer a lot of variety in food tastes. We highly recommend this apartment, you will not be disappointed.

Fantastic Suite in Fascinating Nieghbourhood!

  • 5 out of 5
My wife and I, along with our 2 teens, stayed in this apartment for 7 nights. We loved the suite and had a great experience in Saint-Henri and Montreal.
Instead of repeating the observations of other guests, I will simply confirm the accuracy of the comments in the 5 star reviews. The suite has been extensively updated with many attractive features: high ceilings (with ceiling fans), shiny hardwood floors, bright windows, a modern bathroom (with a great shower), and an efficient air conditioner. The apartment was spotlessly clean. We spent much of our down time on the large deck outside the dining room. We were the only guests who used the deck during our stay.
The owners live next door but were away. We dealt with their 21 year old son. He was an outstanding host: welcoming, friendly and very helpful. The apt contained an excellent "Renter's Manual". In addition to the usual instructions and restaurant recommendations, the manual contained a number of suggested walks with maps, a list of DVD movies that we could borrow, and magazine articles about local businesses.
The suite was an easy walk from the Metro subway station. From there it was a short ride to most of the major tourist areas in the city. We only used our rental car a few times. This is an ideal location for anyone who wants to explore the city by bike. We rented bikes, helmets and locks (at a great price) from the owner’s garage. We cycled along the canal to Old Montreal. There is a convenience store almost across the street, a good pizza and salad restaurant about 2 blocks away and an outstanding pie & coffee shop about 4 blocks away. There are many other shops and cafes within a 15 minute walk.
I was fascinated by Saint-Henri. I cannot think of anything like it in Vancouver or in any West Coast USA city. There are many articles on line about the history of the area and the recent gentrification and influx of new restaurants and businesses. There are beautifully restored historic homes and many unique and attractive public buildings (St Zotique Church, Atwater Market, Fire Station, etc). There are two gorgeous park/ squares with shade trees and historic fountains (the closest square has a nice outdoor pool). The area is a bit gritty but we felt completely safe day and night. There were many pedestrians in the area and a palpable sense of community - with people sitting out and socializing on their doorsteps and balconies. Recommended for anyone who wants to experience authentic Montreal.

OK for a short stay

  • 3 out of 5
My family and I stayed in this apartment for 3 nights when we arrived in Canada. We arrived very late due to plane delays and were taken to the apartment and told the "rules". We found this somewhat ironic as it was impressed upon us that no smoking was allowed. As all none smokers this would not affect us, but we then found cigarette ash on the bedside table and cigarette stub on the lounge area floor! Also we could smell smoke through the apartment. We were desperate for a drink of something before turning in and searched all the cupboards to try and find glass or cup and eventually looked in the dishwasher to find all the utensils, crockery was still in there. Not too happy having to empty a dishwasher at midnight! I would suggest the apartment is inspected prior to anyone arriving and then these problems would not arise. Please be aware that the stairs are VERY steep and curve as they go up. No-one with problems would be able to get up and down these easily and also it was very hard to carry cases up and down them, as you can imagine for a "holiday of lifetime" we had plenty of luggage. We have stayed in rentals houses and apartments and everything inbetween, all around the world, and so have a good knowledge of what to expect. I would comment that I know the owners wanted to keep the place intact but stressing that shoes should be taken off and even if your heel damages the floor they will charge you, is going a bit far for a rental, you must expect some wear and tear.Having said that if you just looking for somewhere to sleep as you "do" Montreal this would be ideal for you, just do not have any high expectations of staying in a "home from home".

Owner's Response: We are shocked to receive your lengthy review 6 months after you had your 3 night stay in Gallery2. I don't doubt that you did not have a good experience, however, we would have appreciated at least some kind of indication that things were not OK. We strive to offer our guests a first class experience and we obviously didn't meet your expectations. If you had let us know, we would have done our best to remedy the situation. Best regards, John & Jane.
