3 bedroom villa to sleep 6 in Kontomari, 5 min from the beach

The villa is secluded, built on a private property. Outside, a swimming pool ideal for dives and a barbecue with a covered pergola for alfresco dining, allow full enjoyment of the rural setting and the panoramic view. The trim garden is full of trees and colorful flowers. The villa is built on three floors. The main entrance is on the middle floor, which comprises the living room, with the modern furniture and the fireplace, the fully equipped kitchen, the dining area and a bathroom. A French door opens to the terrace with the pool and the BBQ area. On the upper floor there are one twin and one double bedroom with en-suite bathrooms and a cute corner with a table and a chair. Both bedrooms have private balconies with view to the pool, the groves, and the blue Cretan Sea. From the living room, stairs lead to the lower floor, where a cosy sitting room and a twin bedroom are found. The bedroom has a window and a door that opens to the garden. Next to the door, stairs lead to the pool.

Villa Danae is located in Kontomari, 5min from Maleme. A pretty country track wanders gently upwards through ancient olive groves until it reaches the villa, which enjoys breathtaking view over the coastline from Kolimbari in the west to the Akrotiri peninsular in the east. Although modern, Danae has a decidedly rural, well-established feel; its earth and ochre colours let it blend into the Cretan countryside. Inside, the decoration is based on natural textures and colours, with wooden ceilings and stone floors. Villa Danae is very comfortable with a very high standard of modern amenities.

16 km west of Chania, in this very fertile corner of Crete, Maleme was famously the setting for the epic Battle of Crete in the last world war. Today the countryside is dominated by sweet smelling orange groves and whispering plantations of tall bamboo which fringe the mile upon mile of almost deserted beaches, punctuated by the occasional cosmopolitan hotel. Maleme has a good choice of tavernas, and a fairly large supermarket and although the village has undoubtedly grown in recent years, it still retains a pleasingly unsophisticated air and if you explore a little, you'll soon find the local baker and a real Greek butcher's shop. For a little more action the bustling village of Platanias is just under 4km away but if you prefer a slower pace of life and a rather more tranquil atmosphere, there are several sleepy villages located just inland.

Shouldn't really write anything nice about this villa as we want to keep the place all to ourselves... the location is absolutely stunning and as the previous reviewer has said it's hard to tear yourself away from the place. The description is accurate, it is secluded even though there is another villa behind, it is completely obscured by some clever planting and very quiet with views over the olive groves to the sea beyond. The property is clean and very well maintained and the owner provided very good customer service, nothing was too much trouble for him. A car is essential, though there is a bus service running all the way into Chania so you can leave the car in Maleme and do a bit of sightseeing without the hassle of parking. We did some walking locally and further afield but Platanias and other resorts close by offer a bit more to do and see, again on the bus route. We too loved the cats that came by every day and I'm afraid we were guilty of feeding them but who can resist such adorable little creatures. We're thinking that we might go again in 2012 it was so peaceful there.

We had 2 fabulous weeks at Danae Villa. It's beautiful property - the house, pool and gardens are superb. We actually ended up spending far more time around the pool that we had originally intended, but it was just so hard to tear ourselves away. It's completely secluded, so you can even leave your swimsuit at home if you like...

Great location for touring the west of Crete - Falasarna and Elafonisi beaches are easy to get to as are Chania and Rethymnon (not to be missed). Trips to Samaria Gorge depart from nearby Platanias (10 minutes away) and if you don't want to roam, there are some lovely little spots to eat and drink in Pyrgos (at the bottom of the hill) and Maleme (2 km away).

Car is ESSENTIAL, as is a love of cats - there's a delightful family of beautiful, friendly Cretan cats living in the olive grove and they stopped by to visit pretty much every day. They were a pure pleasure.

We would heartily recommend this for a honeymoon or romantic getaway for two, or even for a family or small group. It's ideal for 2 couples as both the main bedrooms are the same size and have en suite bathrooms and balconies over the pool.

A truly wonderful place. I would return there tomorrow if I could...
