Photos and Description of this Sarlat la Caneda holiday cottage
Charming 4-bedroom, 2 bathroom home with breathtaking views, garden and jacuzzi

This unique 18th century stone house built onto the ramparts of an 11th century castle has fully enclosed gardens, terraces, jacuzzi and is toddler friendly with many baby/child extras available. It is a dream come true for romantics and those passionate about medieval history, perfect for a relaxing affordable family holiday or a romantic stress-free getaway.

Doted with antique hand made furniture, chestnut high-beamed ceilings and meter-thick walls, this charming, historic and recently renovated property is a pure delight. Built with stones from the adjacent castle, Château Cottage blends the authentic traditional style of the Perigord region with the full comforts of modern living.

Château Cottage is ideally located in the heights of the beautiful and peaceful medieval village of Carlux in the heart of the Dordogne Valley with plenty of parking and all amenities within walking distance, yet only a short drive to major historical sites.

The Exterior: The front garden has long blooming white roses that grace the 100 year-old wrought iron gate. Honeysuckle and wisteria and vine-covered trellises wind their way around the house to the charming side terrace.

The fully-enclosed back garden, bordered by the tall ramparts and tower of the 11th century Castle of Carlux, has a separate terrace leading out from the downstairs bedroom. Graced by jasmine, rosemary and elegant old roses trees, this completely private garden and with jacuzzi open out onto splendid views of the rolling valley of Carlux. Having dinner prepared in the open barbecue pit at the base of the castle ramparts is an unforgettable experience not to be missed.

Château Cottage is located in the heart of the tiny classed village of Carlux. Plenty of parking is available in front of the house. A two-minute walk downhill brings you to all amenities: café/restaurant, bakery, corner shop/newsagents, a butcher’s shop, doctor’s office, post office, and farmer’s market.

The Interior: The spacious sunken living room features the huge hand-worked stones of the castle ramparts, a high oak-beamed ceiling and polished chestnut floors. It has lots of natural light thanks to two large double-glazed picture windows and a glass door opening out onto a terrace and private garden. Equipped with a cast iron wood burning stove, this magnificent room is as warm and cosy in the winter as it is cool and airy in the summer.

The large, roomy chef's kitchen has a traditional Perigordan “cantou” fireplace with copper accents, featuring an antique walnut farmhouse table for dining.

The downstairs bedroom is fitted with high oakwood beams and double doors which open out to a private flowered terrace with gorgeous views. There is a luxurious full bathroom on this floor, newly fitted with exquisite mosaic stone floor tiles, a black marble sink and an Italian shower. It is equipped with hand rails for reduced mobility guests.

Upstairs there are two elegant bedrooms with polished chestnut floors furnished with antiques, and one joyfully decorated children's room. The two central rooms have double beds, one with a stunning view of the valley of Carlux (featured in the photo section), and the other (with the possibility of two double beds) with a wonderful view of Carlux's beautifully restored XVII century church. The charming full bathroom on this floor is fitted with delicate hand made Italian tiles and an exotic hardwood floor.

Baby and young child equipment (high chair, crib, bed bottle warmers etc.) is available.

Wonderful family home in small historical village

  • Review Submitted: 31/12/2011
  • Date of Stay: Oct 2011
My husband and I stayed with our daughter and son-in-law and 2 grandchildren in this lovely home for 6 days in October. There were toys and and a sandpit for the children and the large country kitchen had everything you could possibly need. Opening up the shutters of the bedroom windows in the morning to the view of the beautiful valley below was a joy. As it was hot when we stayed there, we made full use of the outside spa. There is a small shop a few minutes down the hill where we walked in the mornings to pick up our bread and milk. This is a great spot for exploring the Dordogne and we would definitely stay here again.

We spent a fantastic holidays week in this property, very well comunicated and at a comfortable distance from the major interesting visits in the area. The house is located in a small, quite but handy village. We travelled with 5 children and we can very much recomend this house for families and friends ,the propietor will help you with anything you may need, offering a beautiful room decorated for children, baby bath, baby seat, even toys etc. The whole house is cozy and nice decorated with all you can ever need in the kitchen. From its privileged position you can enjoy the views from the terrace with the castle tower in one side, the sky full of stars and the jacuzzi! we look forward to come back to this beautiful region and this fantastic house.

'Wonderful place, wonderful stay"

'Wonderful place, wonderful stay"
  • Review Submitted: 31/12/2011
  • Date of Stay: Sep 2011
It's always so hard to know what you're going to get with a place you've only seen and heard about on the 'Net. Our Chateau Cottage rental completely lived up to my expectations. In fact, it was even better. The location of the Cottage is right in the heart of the little town of Carlux, just minutes away from so many great sites throughout the Dordogne area. We were a family of 7, with two grandparents, a great-aunt, two small kids, and my wife and me. Comfortable, big beds for all of us, including a perfect kids' room with a single and a crib for our 3- and 1-year-old. My parents loved the ground-floor bedroom with its easy access to the back patio and beautiful views of the valley. My aunt loved having her own room and her own lovely views of the valley. And my wife and I were right next to the kids' room, with our own window onto the quiet town square. The owner was very responsive in making the reservation, answering all of my questions, and offering fantastic recommendations (highly recommend "La Gabarre" in St. Julien!). We were greeted upon arrival and given the full rundown of the house and all its amenities. We particularly loved the nice, big refrigerator with ice machine (hey, we're Americans; we LOVE our ice!), washer and dryer, wonderful hot tub with views over the valley, and the wifi and TV (we used a lot of the former, though none of the latter). I really would recommend this rental to anyone who's thinking of staying anywhere near the Sarlat/Perigord Noir area. It's very clean, very quiet, full of comfortable furniture and room for the kids to play (oh, and toys! lots of toys for the kids!), and the views are great. It was always so cool to drive home after a day of touring to be able to come "home" to our delightful little house tucked beside the chateau's wall. This house and the area were our favorite of the trip, and I only hope you have as much fun and make as many great memories as we did.
