Keewaydin Island is accessible only by boat, and it forms part of Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. It is an 8 mile long barrier island, just off the coast of Naples, between Gordon Pass and Marco Island, with a peaceful, unspoiled white sugar sand beach. Sunshine, gulf beaches, blue skies, fresh air and peace and quiet abound. If you need a break from the mad pace of urban living today...a week of relaxing at Yellowbird may be your perfect rejuvenator.
Wildlife is abundant, including dolphins, manatees, key deer, armadillos, and many osprey nests with fledglings being cared from by doting parents. Keewaydin is a migration stopover for 150 different species of interesting birds on their way North or South, and many who live here year-round, including eagles, pelicans, and the gorgeous large pink roseate spoonbills. If you are ever fortunate enough to see one fly over you, I guarantee your heart will stop.
This is a great place to unwind. You can swim and sun, walk and talk, boogie-board or stand-up paddleboard, go kayaking, collect shells on the beach, fish from dock, boat or beach, read, write, relax and re-connect with your yourself and your loved ones, and with the beauty of nature. And yet you are only 30 minutes from civilization and its benefits, if you want it or need it.
It's not too good to be true.
It's here...waiting for you.
This was our second time staying at Yellowbird. Kathy and Ahmed continue to do everything possible to ensure a wonderful, restful vacation. We have rented houses in other parts of the country, and no one comes even close to the attention to detail and desire to provide a stress free vacation than these two owners. We once again hated to leave both the house and island. Even before we left the dock my kids were asking when we were coming back. New discoveries during this visit were amazing: Moon lit family walks on the beach, a bonfire on the beach, the armadillo, tortoise eggs, schools of fish being chased by cobia, and paddle boarding during the chase. We also had sand castle contests, played football on the beach, found sand dollars, boogie boarded, cooked with friends, hung out at night and in the morning on the deck, played cards and laid in the hammock. This truly is a slice of heaven for two families who look forward to returning to Yellowbird. Thanks Kathy and Ahmed!
We have 3 couples that vacation together every year. I organize the trip. I must say I was a bit nervous on this one as were the ladies but the owners from booking to departure were purely delightful to work with. The information, attention to detail, willingness to bend over backwards to make our stay in their home delightful was unparalleled. Their house is incredible and the island is virtually private so if you want to escape from people for a while, this is your place. The house has literally everything you would need from water shoes in every size, to kayaks, paddle boards, boogie boards, snorkel gear, games, beach chairs/umbrellas, fishing equipment, toys for kids, etc, etc. I am not sure I could think of something this house does not have. Cellular service is decent and the house has good internet/WiFi if you need to connect to civilization for a minute. The boat ride to and from Naples and too Marco is scenic and peaceful. The wildlife is amazing. We saw wild boar on the property, deer, turtles, dolphin, iguanas, eagles and many other bird species. The home and all the linens are impeccably clean. We would highly recommend this house and destination for something out of the ordinary. Probably our most memorable and special couples trip.
First I want to tell this is my first time in south Florida. I visit Florida twice every year but always north. This is first time we went south. I not sure if I must make review because it will make me competitors for my next visits there and will be harder find open days, but experience what I have I must share. We meat best people there, Ahmed and Kathy - owners of this beautiful house! Very nice people, very helpful and friendly. They take care of us even before we get there with so much information, directions, phone calls, etc. I felt like special guest in 5 star resort. Our adventure started even before we met house owners because place where we met was very nice restaurant, right on bay channel with very delicious food, cold beer and wine. Very nice after almost 18 hours in a car. Owner of restaurant and all people who work there knows Ahmed and Kathy and will take care of you as special guests! Also owner of restaurant not ordinary person, she is famous.
Trip to Keewaydin island:
I was very surprised when 3 boats meet us and people loaded all our baggage and stuff. They took everything on island in safe condition. When we get on island everything was unloaded and ready. Even my 14' ocean kayak was delivered there. You will have very nice trip to island looking on millions $ property, boats and beautiful bay. Owners will introduce you everything including: maps, rules, directions, tips, etc.
I rent property in Florida almost twice every year and owners always say they have everything for leaving. This time was same thing, but difference they do mean EVERYTHING! From batteries, emergency water, bugs sprays, flash lights, garbage bags and towels to many umbrellas, chairs, water toys, kayaks, stand up boards, golf cart, grills, snorkeling equipment, fishing gear. You need only drinks and food, they provide everything you can imaging!
I have only about 3000 characters to write review, it is nothing to describe Yellowbird, you can write book about it. I wish I can upload my pictures. We catch so much fish from Snook and Grooper to Jack and sharks, right from house pier, met dozens different animals on island, swim, have fun and relax. And all on private island, when you on beach no one around miles away, everything yours! We have 7 people in house but it can hold much more. 4 private bedrooms and about 7 toilets in a house.
If you looking for own private house and beach - this is all you need!
Where do I start? My family takes a summer trip each year to different beaches in Florida. We have stayed in multi-million dollar homes up and down the west coast, and this was by far our favorite. The owners, Kathy and Ahmed, go out of their way to be sure that you have everything that you need to make your stay comfortable and fun. We had a blast with paddle boards, kayaks, boogie boards, masks/fins/snorkels, fishing poles, the golf cart, the boat, board games, puzzles, and a huge array of DVD's.
The beach - WOW - a 3 min stroll or a short golf cart ride to miles of deserted, pristine, white, fluffy sand, clear water, shells, dolphins, and manatees. The house has umbrellas and chairs, to sit in the sun or watch the gorgeous sunsets. The view from the house is also wonderful!
The house is unbelievably clean (important to our group) and the beds are super comfortable! There is a bathroom in every bedroom, and one on the ground floor and main living room floor - very convenient! The pics to not do justice to this beautiful home.
Thank you for this incredible family vacation so special that we will remember it forever. We will be back!
Scott, Carolyn, George, Elaine, Garrett, Erin & Ollie :-)
P.S. Bring grapes to feed the iguana!
Off the grid for a week! Our group of 4 couples was a bit apprehensive. Beautiful Yellowbird dispelled all concerns. Owners Kathy and Ahmed accompanied us by boat and provided a thorough tour of the property’s many amenities and eco-friendly features. This is perhaps the best-supplied vacation rental we’ve ever experienced. From the dozens of beach towels to the cupboards chock full of paper products, we had only to provide our food and drinks for the week. Forgot to bring extra camera batteries? Insect repellant? You’ll find these and other supplies graciously provided by the owners who respect the fact that we won’t want to leave this beautiful island for mundane shopping trips. The kitchen is beautifully appointed with everything the foodies in our group needed. An ice machine kept up handily with our cocktail-making all week. Four 2500 gallon tanks hold rainwater that we used for everything; it’s the BEST for hair-washing! Solar panels generated most of our electricity although there is a huge generator that serves as backup in the event of cloudy or rainy days. It’s far enough from the house so that it can’t be heard when it kicks on, which it did for a short time during our stay. The bedrooms are identical except for the smaller bed in the 4th bedroom and the bedspreads, bed linens, pillows, towels, etc all seemed brand new. A telescoping window from kitchen to outside bar and gas grill ensured that no one was stuck in the kitchen. And the beach! Powder sand and the best shelling one can imagine. We rarely saw another soul on “our” stretch of beach the entire week. We experienced a mild surf….enough to generate that soothing sound but easy to navigate into deeper waters when we wanted to. Beach chairs, umbrellas, paddle boards and other toys were all available for our use and neatly stored in cabinets on the fully decked ground floor. This floor also has a huge gathering space with a wet bar and plush outdoor furniture. Our group glimpsed key deer, iguanas, tortoises and numerous ospreys and herons. If any of your group, however, is allergic to noseeum bites as I am, be sure and layer on the repellant; they were particularly mean during our visit. It truly felt as though we had the island to ourselves; the isolation may be a bit much for some; not for us. The remote nature of Yellowbird gave us a new awareness for conserving our natural resources. Luxury amidst a tropical natural habitat!
We spent a week at Yellowbird. Our group consisted of two families with children ranging from 5-8yrs old. We really loved our time at Yellowbird. The owners Kathy and Ahmed could not have been more generous and accommodating - helping us transport all our luggage and groceries out to the island and being so generous with their house and their belongings. We felt truly welcome. The house itself is amazing, simple, comfortable and clean. We loved the challenge of living off the grid. The location is just beautiful with it's proximity to a pretty much deserted beach and incredible wildlife. We spent many happy hours body surfing, bird watching, collecting shells and watching the sun slip below the horizon at the end of the day. One challenge that should not be underestimated was steering clear of the "noseeums" which are quite prevalent at the beginning and end of the day. By the end of the week we had adapted to them but there were a few sleepless nights as we learned to keep doors and windows closed during certain hours. Having access to the boat was good fun and we had a few exhilarating morning fishing expeditions where we caught no fish but returned having seen a lot of nature in action - great feeding frenzies of fish, dolphins and birds and even a manatee on the way home. We found the trip into Marco Island doable but not the 20 minute jaunt that we thought it would be.
We would definitely recommend staying at Yellowbird to those interested in experiencing a very pristine and wild part of Florida. Our time out there was very restorative and we left feeling very connected to the natural world. Our kids absolutely loved the experience. We love cooking so the packing in of food and cooking all our meals worked well for us. Had one of us been a real fisherman it would have been unbelievable! We hope to hone our fishing skills before returning so that we can enjoy some of the incredible bounty that we witnessed out there!
Many thanks to Kathy and Ahmed for sharing this special part of the world.
