Busselton is a beautiful coastal town located on the southern West Australian coast, roughly 250km from the state’s capital, Perth. This region is a favourite amongst international and domestic tourists, and as such, has been voted the state’s top tourist town three times. Travellers staying in the Busselton region are consequently guaranteed to have a multitude of activities, sights and holiday accommodation to choose from, resulting in the holiday experience of a lifetime.
As Busselton is a coastal settlement, many of the activities offered revolve around the water, the most popular of which are: surfing, scuba diving, fishing and whale watching. Busselton is also very well known for having the longest wooden jetty in the southern hemisphere, which comprises a stunning underwater observatory, as well as swimming and diving platforms. Holiday makers with accommodation in or near the township can consequently choose to take a leisurely stroll along the jetty, or hitch a ride on the ‘jetty train’, which quickly covers the 2km trip to the observatory.
Once inside the 8 metre deep, newly renovated underwater observatory international visitors are able to come face to face with some of Western Australia’s most beautiful tropical and subtropical aquatic creatures, without having to get so much as their toes wet. Travellers can also relive their underwater experience from their holiday home via the internet, as the observatory offers an amazing underwater live camera feed.
Travellers who are more interested in getting into the water, rather than just watching through glass, can conveniently snorkel or scuba dive directly off the jetty. Numerous Busselton dive companies offer guided jetty dive tours, or equipment rental, as well as trips to various offshore dive sites. One of the most popular offshore sites in the region is the HMAS Swan, which was Australia’s first scuttled dive wreck.
Holiday makers interested in swimming or surfing, in comparison, are spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches. The Busselton Beachfront, directly near the town centre (and most Busselton holiday accommodation), is a great place to swim and includes amenities such as a kiosk, netted swimming areas and picnic facilities. Surfer will need to travel a little further to find a suitable break; however, there are at least 10 great surf breaks within 40 km of Busselton, including Smiths Beach, Yallingup, Moses Rock, Guillotine, Supertubes, and Honeycombs.
Holiday makers looking for something a little more leisurely and luxurious need not look far, as Busselton is located a mere 50km from the world famous Margaret River wine region. The Margaret River area is home to over 60 amazing wineries ranging from large famous undertakings to small practically unknown boutique vineyards, all of which offer generous tastings and years of wine expertise. Various Margaret River vineyards also offer luxury holiday villas and restaurants, which allow international travellers experience all that the area has to offer.
The Donnybrook area is another well known wine producing region, located roughly 60km from Busselton. Travellers lucky enough to be in the area in February are treated to the annual ‘Donnybrook Food and Wine Festival’, which showcases Donnybrook’s local produce including various specialty foods, olive oils and wines. The region is also home to numerous wineries, including an award winning cider factory, which travellers can visit at their own volition.
Fantastic boutique holiday accommodation is also available in the Donnybrook region, in the form of small family run bed and breakfasts and farm stays, which are perfect for holiday makers looking to get a feel for the authentic Australian way of life, and perhaps participate in the day to day operations of a fruit orchard or winery.
The Busselton region is a great all-season holiday destination, although the majority of international holiday makers tend to visit the area during spring or summer, owing to the fantastic beach weather provided. Regardless of when travellers visit Busselton however, there are always great activities, sights and holiday deals on offer.
Various airlines such as British Airlines, Emirates and Malaysian Airlines offer flights from London’s Heathrow and City Airports to Western Australia’s capital city Perth. Once holiday makers touchdown in Perth they can choose to rent a car, or take the bus, in order to cover the remaining 250km of stunning Western Australian landscape between themselves and their relaxing Busselton holiday home.
