Katoomba: Don’t Forget your Camera!

Katoomba is set just over 100 kilometres from Sydney and is easily accessible via train or vehicle. The holiday destination is set in the heart of the Blue Mountains and is actually the most visited town in the range. Wondrous natural scenery is just one of the things that allows Katoomba to stand out amongst competition; the peace and quiet that comes from the secluded location truly allows visitors to recharge. Families feel comfortable visiting Katoomba, as there is a wide variety of child-friendly activities in and around town. Walking trails and scenic lookouts mix with in-town amenities to give holidaymakers plenty of options for entertainment. The town itself is very dog-friendly, and as such, many of the holiday rental options welcome the addition of pets.

Katoomba's Lookouts

If you have to choose one scenic point in Katoomba, the Three Sisters Lookout is the most popular. The group of three sandstone peaks are highly visible from the plateau near Echo Point Lookout. Fencing surrounds the man-made platform viewing area as an extra measure of precaution.

A favourite for active travellers is Narrow Neck Lookout, only accessible by mountain bike or foot. This vantage point allows visitors to see Narrow Neck Peninsula, the divider of the Jamison and Megalong Valleys. Much of the ride up can be done in a four-wheel drive vehicle, though the final 7 kilometres are for hikers and bikers only. The trails, in fact, are a famous option for the area's mountain bikers.

Cliff Drive is a major traffic point for accessing the area's various scenic lookouts, which include Eaglehawk Lookout, Landslide Lookout and Cahills Lookout. Cliff View Lookout, Wollumai Lookout, Lady Darly Lookout and Allambie Lookout are some of the other options around Katoomba.

See More at Scenic World

Get a whole new perspective on Katoomba by visiting Scenic World. Here, visitors have numerous options for experiencing everything the Blue Mountains have to offer. On land, there is a scenic walkway through the rainforest and a lovely train ride, which includes the steepest vertical incline of any passenger train in the world. Glass roofs on the trains provide a unique vantage point as visitors pass through the trees and valleys. Up in the sky, holidaymakers have the chance to experience the Skyway and the Cableway. Cableway passengers descend down into the valley and have lovely views from the fully enclosed cars. On the Skyway, glass-bottomed cars give riders the chance to look down over all the peaks and lookouts from above. Views of up to 720 degrees make for an unforgettable experience.

Trails and Hikes around Katoomba

When in Katoomba, there are a number of hiking paths to choose from to feed the adventurer in everyone and to fully explore the area. One of the most difficult passages, Federal Pass is a 4 1/2-hour hike through the lush rainforest. Flora and fauna abound, and there are great lookout points and picnic areas while on the hike. In the medium difficulty range, both the Prince Henry Cliff Walk and the Leura Cascades Fern Bower are ideal. Bring your camera along for either route! Wentworth Falls is another medium-difficulty option; however this trek ends at a gorgeous waterfall.

Katoomba's Town Scene

In the central business district of Katoomba, a mixture of charming local shops and bigger retailers come together to give holidaymakers an interesting shopping experience. Vintage book stores pair with high-end establishments, such as the combination cellar and deli, for an eclectic feel. In addition, the in-town portion of this destination boasts a great variety of art galleries and a cultural centre to give a little background about the area. Spas and beauty salons provide another form of relaxation, while the town's restaurants provide tasty cuisine options of all types. A golf club, a large-scale cinema and great hotel options complete the in-town offerings.

Visit Katoomba

The natural beauty of this small mountain community is heightened by the friendly locals who call Katoomba home. Because mountain exploration is best done in cooler times of the year, winter travellers will find plenty to do as the oceanic climate meshes perfectly with Katoomba’s most popular outdoor activities.
