Launceston is the second largest city in Tasmania, the most southern state off the coast of Victoria and with easy access from the Australian mainland, via air or overnight ferry, Launceston is a beautiful spot for a relaxing getaway.

Launceston's Cultural Hub

Launceston has developed over the years into an authentic cultural hub with 100-year-old parklands drawing locals and visitors to the stunning outdoors. Museums, as well as vibrant cafe's and fine restaurant, make a day in the city a great experience. Despite the cool climate, local wines are award-winning and a tour of the wineries dotted throughout the Tamar Valley are well worth a visit. The riverside hamlets are stunning places to visit especially when you're rewarded at the winery cellar door with Rieslings and Pinots followed by a fine dinner in one of the wineries restaurants. The route that takes you around the wineries also takes you to a wild life sanctuary and the mining and maritime heritage displays in Beaconsfield and George Town.

The World Famous Launceston Cataract Gorge

Launceston Cataract Gorge is a world-famous inner urban reserve where you're greeted by a colourful liar bird that patrols the grounds making all visitors feel welcome. It's an easy 15 minute walk to the Gorge from the centre of Launceston by way of a boardwalk that takes you past the Home Point rowing course on the Tamar River, continue past Richies Mill where you can find some of the city's best galleries and restaurants. You then zig zag your way to the Gorge itself, a valley of mystic beauty surrounded with steep rocky cliffs reaching skyward that are popular with rock climbers. You can also ride the southern hemispheres longest single span chairlift which gives you magnificent views of the Gorge across the waterway far below. The bottom of the Gorge is known as the basin and it features a swimming pool and large grassed picnic areas. After heavy rains the basin can become a whirlpool of swirling, thundering, flood water, a thrilling sights that never fails to draw a crowd.

Fantastic Accommodation Options

Launceston accommodation is plentiful with many choices available. One of the most popular being holiday rentals where the family, or a group of friends, are able to be accommodated at lower prices than that charged by hotels or motels for group accommodation. Launceston holiday rentals can offer visitors everything from cosy cottages to modern apartments, with all the amenities you could need to enjoy your getaway.
