A Natural Paradise – Smiths Beach, Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia
Smiths Beach is a small, picturesque village on the southern coast of Phillip Island. While the island is less than 150 km away from the bright lights and big-city excitement of Melbourne, it is worlds apart in terms of the natural splendor and family-oriented excitement on offer here.
Normally a quiet refuge that anyone would be glad to call their home away from home, the island gets more animated in summer months when holidaymakers from every point of the compass arrive here to celebrate summer. The bucolic farming community takes on new life every year when fishermen, surfers, families on holiday, and nature lovers of every stripe arrive here to claim their holiday homes on Phillip Island.
Interestingly enough, even the quietest cove for summertime respite can’t escape the information age. So if celebrity spotting is of any interest to you, keep a watchful eye. Phillip Island is the hometown of movie stars Chris and Liam Hemsworth. Who knows – you may seem them walking past your holiday villa some morning!
There are many things to do during your stay in Smiths Beach. Only 5 minutes away, you’ll find the popular A Maze ‘N Things amusement park, featuring a miniature golf course, optical illusion center, and a maze with more than 2 km of winding corridors. Don’t worry – there are emergency exits, and no one stays lost for long! This exciting, interactive family fun destination is convenient to all holiday rental home locations in Smiths Beach, making it easy to find your way to and from the park.
After you’re done with your family’s adrenaline treatment, get involved in the real attraction of Smith’s Beach. The Phillip Island area is home to a fantastic assortment of wildlife. For example, Phillip Island has been named an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International. The area is home to more than 1% of the world population of Little Penguins (and don’t forget the nearby tourist attraction, Penguin Parade), Short-tailed Shearwaters, Pacific Gulls, Crested Terns, and many more species.
Depending on where you’ve reserved your holiday accommodations, you may also be conveniently located to the The Nobbies, a nearby area that is home to a large colony of Fur Seals. Up to 16,000 of these animals can be seen here at a time! If you still haven’t had your fill of cute and furry creatures, drop by the Koala Conservation Center. Established in 1991, the Center has elevated boardwalks to get you up close and personal with the local wildlife. While koalas are the focus, the Center is also home to swamp wallabies, echidnas, possums, and more than 80 species of birds. Ticket prices are quite reasonable, and this attraction is really a must-see for the area.
The weather in Smiths Beach and the rest of Phillip Island is not drastically different than Melbourne, but maybe a bit milder. In the warmer months of January and February, expect to encounter daytime high temperatures around 23.5 degrees Celsius. In the winter months (June through August) nighttime temperatures can get somewhat chilly, dipping to the 6.5 – 7.5 degrees Celsius mark. As long as one plans and dresses appropriately, there’s no reason to limit your enjoyment of the area to any one season. If you’re enjoying your holiday home or villa, perhaps you’ll even extend your stay!
Notes on Travel
It is recommended that you first focus on your choice of holiday rental accommodation. Whether you prefer a holiday home or villa, directly on the beach or perhaps in a quieter spot, making sure that you’ve secured your preferred home away from home is the most important point. With that taken care of, its time to book your flights. Your preferred carrier likely offers multiple daily departures from any of London’s airports to Melbourne. Use any of the popular online booking engines, and you’ll be swamped with options. Once you’ve arrived in Melbourne’s Tullamarine airport, hiring a car is the best plan. Drive SSE from Melbourne, about two hours, and cross the bridge from the mainland at San Remo to Phillip Island.
Smiths Beach, Phillip Island, is a truly unique holiday destination. We hope that you’ll agree, and we look forward to seeing you soon. Have a pleasant flight!
