Stradbroke Island: An Adventure in Brisbane's Backyard

Stradbroke Island can be found off the coast 30 kilometres from Brisbane and is one of the largest sand islands on the planet. White sandy beaches stretch for kilometres around the coastline and there are plenty of inland activities to keep visitors occupied, as well. This holiday destination is split into two islands, with North Stradbroke Island being home the more developed region and South Stradbroke Island being better suited for those who like peace, quiet and adventure. Stylish beachfront resorts are just one of the holiday rental options while in Stradbroke Island, with other rentals including self-contained homes and comfortable cottages.

The Fresh Waters of Stradbroke Island

While the salty blue ocean is popular for swimming, there are many freshwater options on the island, including lagoons and lakes. Some of these waterways, such as those in Blue Lake National Park (now a part of Naree Budjong Djara National Park), are only accessible on foot. While in the park, spend time watching the birds and animals that call the area home, or swim, fish and play in the water. Brown Lake, meanwhile, is a favourite picnic destination and is easily accessible by car. The lake is safe for swimming and includes toilets and barbecues for visitor convenience. There are multiple small lagoons on Stradbroke Island, as well as a swamp, and each area features abundant flora and fauna and plenty of paths for exploration.

Choose Your Beach

Main Beach is patrolled and fit for water sports. Large swells make the water great for surfing and body boarding. The north wall of Main Beach includes lush underwater scenery that may interest scuba divers and snorkelers.

Though it is not patrolled, Flinders Beach is the best option for those travelling with pets. Dogs are more than welcome on the stand, provided they are kept on a leash. Camping slots are also available on the foreshore, and there is plenty of space to walk around.

Family-friendly and safe for swimmers, Cylinder Beach is both easily accessible and beautiful. Small waves roll through these waters. A convenient car parking area is set just a few metres from the shore.

All of the other beaches throughout Stradbroke Island have their own benefits, and they all offer an unspoiled environment for waterfront fun. Some of the beaches have rock pools and are fantastic for spotting marine life, while others are private beaches that are great for walking along to collect seashells.

Off-Road Wanders and Eco Tours

With many private areas that are only accessible via four-wheel drive, Stradbroke Island's most secluded features are best seen by off-road vehicles, such as four wheelers. If you want to see the sights while getting some exercise, take part in one of Stradbroke Island's cycling tours. There are paths for every skill level, ranging from easy to more difficult. Many of the roads do accommodate cars, however, and a self-guided driving tour is a great way to see both ends in one day. Want to learn a little more about Stradbroke Island’s ecology? Participate in an Eco and Adventure Tour. While out and about, discover new information on the abundant waterways and the local animal species.

Head Back to Civilization

Sculptors, painters and artists of all types are inspired by the lush natural surroundings of Stradbroke Island, and as such, the downtown area is home to a number of art galleries. Check out exhibits by both indigenous and non-indigenous artists.

When it comes to shopping on Stadbroke, surf stores are popular, and of course there are plenty of retailers where you can buy souvenirs. Conveniences and amenities are spread throughout the island, as there many outlets for fresh seafood, ripened produce and meat. Other options include hardware, book and home stores.

Being an island, fresh seafood is a specialty in many of the local restaurants. Fantastic eateries are dispersed throughout Stradbroke Island, which provides something for nearly every taste. Whether you enjoy pizzerias or quaint cafes, there is an option for you.

So Much to Do, So Little Time

With a warm climate of 20 to 28 C throughout the year, Stradbroke Island's activities never stop. This island is accessible by ferry or water taxi from Cleveland, which is just an hour outside of Brisbane, and guests can bring their cars along or leave them behind- Stradbroke Island is a flexible holiday retreat.
