History of Port Douglas
Gold was first discovered at Hodgkinson River in 1876 and Port Douglas was soon established a year later as a township in 1877. The then United States of America President Bill Clinton and his First Lady, Hillary Clinton, holidayed in Port Douglas in 1996, highlighting the importance and international appeal of this extraordinary part of Australia.
