In Thredbo, there's no business like snow-business

Time to put that new pair of twin-tip skis through their paces, because Thredbo is the daddy of snow sports resorts. Whether you're looking to break the sound barrier on the black runs or take your first ungainly skid down the nursery slope, Thredbo vacation rentals have got you covered. Come summer, the snow clears off and the mountain bikers come out to play. And in this buzzing little town in the Snowy Mountains, there's almost as much going on off the slopes as on them. With shopping, nightlife, live music venues and more than 30 restaurants, there's never a spare minute in Thredbo.

Thredbo? They really ought to call it Shredbo

Shredders rejoice, because Thredbo vacation rentals are all about snow sports. With more than 50 runs – including some of the longest in Australia – Thredbo's one of the top skiing and snowboarding destinations on the continent, and with plenty of beginners' slopes and terrain parks, it pretty much caters to everyone. Best of all, when the snow stops, the fun doesn't. Come summer, Thredbo becomes a top destination for hiking, climbing and downhill biking. It's got the highest golf course in the country, and its annual blues festival each January keeps things cool even when the sun's shining.

You'll be riding high in Kosciuszko National Park

Thredbo is nestled high up in Kosciuszko National Park, and Mount Kosciuszko itself is a major attraction. It's Australia's highest point, and if you undertake the 4-hour round trip to bag the summit, you'll be literally on top of the country, if not quite the world. In the other direction, you could head down the mountain for attractions including the Gaden Trout Hatchery in Jindabyne or the Wildbrumby Distillery in Crackenback. And if little legs are getting a bit stiff from ski school, Thredbo vacation rentals offer plenty of family-friendly attractions, including a disc golf course and trampolines.

They don't call them the Snowy Mountains for nothing

While the higher mountain sides usually get a good covering of the white stuff through conventional means, the slopes closer to town are at relatively low altitude, so Thredbo's owners have given Mother Nature a little helping hand in the form of one of the most advanced snowmaking systems on the continent. The upshot of all this is that snow in Thredbo is reliable right through the season, and we can all raise an apres-ski drink to that. Come summer, it warms up considerably, though it can still be quite cool, and the occasional dusting of snow has been known.

Think bigger is better? Thredbo does too

Thredbo likes to make sure it takes the top spot in most matters. Set in the Snowy Mountains, it's got the longest runs and highest ski lifts in Australia, and it's also set in Kosciuszko National Park, home to Mount Kosciuszko – the highest mountain in the country. The Thredbo River follows the Alpine Way road most of the way down the mountain and eventually tumbles into vast, man-made Lake Jindabyne. Among the most distinctive features of the area are the impossibly tough snow gum trees clinging to the slopes, and the occasionally problematic population of wild horses – or 'brumbies'.
