Destination guide

This neighbouring island gives Bali a run for its money

You might be familiar with Bali but not so much its neighbouring island Lombok, even though it's equally beautiful and receives less rain. Kuta is on the southern side of the island and blessed with glorious waves that attract surfers from all over the world, especially between March and September when swells are highest. There are a few sheltered beaches as well, and they, along with the bars and restaurants, are laid-back and often uncrowded. Because of its many trails, especially around the volcano in the north, Lombok and Kuta vacation rentals are popular with backpackers and hikers.

Things to do

Happy trails for travellers who love hiking

Gunung Rinjani is a towering volcano in northern Lombok that offers great jungle treks and epic pay-off views from the top after a long uphill hike. Another popular area to get your hike on and take some awesome pics is Air Terjun Benang Kelambu, which has a network of cool waterfalls. If the kids need a beach break, take them to Rinjani Waterpark, which has pools and waterslides. Mataram, about an hour from Kuta, is Lombok's biggest city, and Senggigi Beach is one of its top attractions. The Gili Islands north of Mataram are a popular diving and snorkelling spot.

Activities

You'll be waterlogged in the best way possible

Kuta vacation rentals are in a compact space, about 3 km wide and deep, so you'll have easy access to the area's beautiful beaches. Pantai Seger is a serene oceanside green space with a white-sand beach and cultural festival that's celebrated in February. Surfers flock here and to Desert Point about a dozen kilometres west for the awesome and varying breaks. There are dozens of lively bars and restaurants where you can duck in and enjoy a cold bevvie and some of Lombok's delicious fresh seafood.

Weather

Kuta's rain is much meeker than neighbouring monsoons

If you're booking Kuta vacation rentals between November to March, the not-so-swell news is this is when it's most likely to rain. However, Lombok doesn't receive nearly as intense and frequent downpours as neighbouring Bali. Temperatures are in the upper 20s and early 30s year-round, so be smart and pack light, breathable clothing for hot and humid weather. The temps in the Indian Ocean are also around 29 degrees all year, with slight dips from June to September. The skies are their driest between May and October, the most popular time for travellers.

Natural highlights

You'll lava the views from the top of this volcano

Kuta is about 300 miles south of the Equator and has all the things people love about the tropics, like warm ocean water, lush plants and fruits. Many of these are staple crops here, such as coffee beans and bananas. Indonesia's 2nd highest volcano, Gunung Rinjani, looms over northern Lombok at 3,700 metres and lures hikers who want to drink in the cool views and admire the wildlife. There are tons of birds here, including rare ones like the Himalayan Cuckoo. The coastline ranges from hilly and rugged to flat and sandy, and the inland is covered with lush tropical plants.
