Close to Portland, Freeport shopping (home of LLBean), Bowdoin College, museums in Bath and Brunswick, and many state parks and beaches. Our home, almost surrounded by water and at the high tides with the new moon and the full moon, briefly becomes an island. Under most circumstances this does not impact your visit. Once in a while though you have to use our tide charts to plan when you will leave or return.
About Mark and Carol Peterson
We have bought and renovated many houses over our lifetime and Thea was a particular challenge because everything needed to be upgraded. Once we got the first floor in livable condition we raised the roof on one side to allow for two queen size bedrooms with water view and two smaller bedrooms behind. Over the years we continued to make cosmetic improvements - our latest being new counters in the kitchen. At this point there is very little of the original house left.
Mark and Carol Peterson purchased this house in 1986
Why Mark and Carol Peterson chose Freeport
We had been looking for a summer home on the Maine Coast for many years and when we saw this property we bought it in our hearts before we'd even viewed the interior. The location was everything! Coincidental with this is we spent several summer family vacations on Bustin's, the little island that one can from this location. Now when our adult children return each summer with their own children we all journey out to there to see where we spent many pleasant times as a young family.
What makes this house unique
Being the last house on a point is indeed a unique feature. Often during the full moon or the new moon, the causeway we drive across covers with a few inches to a eighteen inches of water at high tide. End result? We're an island for ten minutes to two hours depending on the height of the tide. The tidal changes also brings changing wild life to our area. Great Blue Herons come and go with the tides as do geese, ducks, ospreys, and even striped bass. Our grandson caught a 22" one off the beach in front of our deck. The best part is when an eagle comes to roost in one of the high pine trees in hopes of scoring a baby osprey.
