The perfect getaway on 20 acres of privacy, overlooking Flat Bay in Harrington, Maine. Seventy-five feet from the shore, this is a special place for peace and quiet, built with dimensional lumber, boarded & shingled in cedar. It is free of many allergy-causing elements. All the conveniences you would expect in a year-round home, in a setting all by itself. A copy of a Civil War general's home, you enter from the front porch into a large living room, a dining room with view is in the lower level of the tower. There is a fully equipped galley kitchen, one bedroom with double bed, ample closets, and a full bath. Up the winding stairs is an artist's studio and an upper level of the tower with a balcony where a desk at the windows invites the writer. There are ocean views from every room, hot-air heat, internet available, and the house is furnished & applianced including a phone. Unlike at many rentals, your neighbor's construction project won't become a part of your vacation. Privacy is complete.
Our location offers a unique blend of privacy and convenience. Located a short drive from shopping, movies, restaurants and more, there are still 20 acres to explore and nearly 1/2 mile of shore frontage to discover on your own.
Our first impression of this Victorian Cottage began at 7:30pm. Just like it was ordered for us, we found ourselves emerging from the long winding driveway to a view of the most beautiful full moon rising over the bay! Rod and Lucille were happily waiting to greet us and show us around their beautiful home, giving us tips and answering all the questions we had. Our hosts live just a few miles away and were so helpful throughout our stay. Their knowledge of the surrounding area gave us plenty of places to go and things to do. The Cottage has everything you could want or need, from the kitchen which is fully equipped, to a huge wood pile for the fireplace, to the rocking chairs on the porch for early morning coffee while watching sunrises, to the deer that would come by most every morning and evening to say "hello" and much much more. The property is huge and allows for walks through the trees that found us numerous times meeting up with the local deer. Overlooking the bay, we found enjoyment just by watching the tides come in and out. For anyone who loves taking pictures, you may find yourself just staying on property as there was a never ending variety of things to take pictures of. It truly is a piece of paradise and a great place to unwind from the hectic world! Thank you again Rod and Lucille for sharing your "little piece of heaven" with us. It was a vacation that we will remember for years to come!
Had a wonderful time staying in Harrington. It was so relaxing and peaceful. The country feel of the cottage was exactly what we where looking for. And the views where amazing!!
This property was the perfect place for a romantic getaway. We loved watching the tides come in and out, wandering around the property and picking wildflowers for a dining room bouquet, and making roaring fires every night. Far enough away for blissful seclusion; yet close enough to many hiking opportunities, farm stands, fish markets, and artist studios for a days' outing. Rod and Lucile were wonderful hosts -- don't change a thing!
This cottage is everything promised and more. Very quiet and secluded and cozy, but also so much space and freedom to roam and observe the Maine beauty and wildlife. We were visited by otters and foxes, snowshoe hares and a slew of birds and large woodpeckers to watch with our morning coffee. The ocean is literally a stones throw away, the porch providing beautiful ocean views and sunsets. At low tide the mudflats were a fascinating and fun place to explore. The house is equipped with everything you would need, there's also a charcoal grill out back. We stayed in late July and the days were hot but the nights were so cool and comfortable, we got the fireplace inside going and it made for the coziest and most rustic of evenings. Rod and Lucille are wonderful people. They live ten minutes away in town so if we needed their help with anything they were so quick to come by and help. Also, they know the area so well, I'd recommend listening to any suggestions they have, they know all the good lobster ports and swimming holes. The town of Milbridge is ten minutes away by car, very convenient for groceries, and Acadia national park and Bar Harbor are only an hours drive, made for some really nice day trips. I'd recommend the Bar Harbor Sunset Whale Watch...ridiculously amazing! Hope this helps, don't hesitate, me and my wife were very fortunate to find such a great spot.
If you like the looks of this property, you'd better move quickly. We who have stayed there want to return and will be snapping up our dates for next summer soon! This was our second year, and there is no other place in downeast Maine we'd choose to go.
This little place has class, character, quiet and beauty. The house itself is really the destination. If you want a quiet place to just "be" for a week, this is it. Watching the tide flow in and out, enjoying the cool breeze on the front porch, listening to birds and frogs calling... these are the defining impressions I have.
You can leave the property and go to Schoodic Point or Acadia/Bar Harbor (we highly recommend taking the ferry from Winter Harbor rather than driving to Bar Harbor) if you are looking for the classic "waves crashing on rocks" Maine experience. Campobello Island (just over the border in New Brunswick, Canada -- don't forget your passport) is just over an hour away, and a truly lovely experience.
If you are looking for restaurants, the choices are somewhat limited (this is downeast Maine, after all), but we've found some gems. Helen's in Machias has a cool, modern vibe and serves a good variety of dishes; do NOT miss the blueberry pie. Pickled Wrinkle in Winter Harbor is a family friendly bar/restaurant, as only a small town can provide. The night we were there, the live music was awfully good.
Of course, you can hardly swing a bat without hitting someplace selling live lobsters, and there are all the necessary tools to cook and crack the monsters at the cottage. We like to go directly to the docks where the lobsters come in from the water, and there are at least 2 in Milbridge (that we've tried, anyway). Nothing fresher than buying from the lobsterman! We've had good dealings with Skipman's and Dorr's.
Rod and Lucille are wonderful hosts, checking in to make sure all is well, but then leaving us to enjoy ourselves, and feel like we own the place.
If you don't book now, don't blame me if the place is unavailable...
This place exceeded our expectations. It is right on the bay, secluded, and with
a number of local visitors. A deer visited often, in the morning and evening. We
were also impressed with the Red Fox, who came through regularly. The home
is lovely with the dinning table situated in such a way as to invite the occupants
into the natural sorroundings.
It is centrally located so that day trips to all of "Down East Maine" are within
an easy drive. We would strongly encourage anyone looking for a convenient and
quiet place to vacation to tap this accommodation. You'll be very happy you did.
They don't come much better than this!
