About the property

For couples seeking intimacy seclusion & adventure! Off the grid luxury cabin

"Paradise Found!"

There should be a six star review category. Hale Aloha Aina exceeded our expectations in every way. What a gem of a property. First, the cottage is absolutely beautiful, warm and inviting. When we stepped into the house we instantly felt like we belonged here. The fragrant smell of fresh ginger blooms and plumeria was romantic and played on all of our senses. We couldn't wait to start exploring the property. What fun to find such a great variety of fruit trees and exotic plants. Bananas, limes, avocados, pineapples and guavas to name a few. This is a virtual garden of Eden. No matter how much the rest of the island beckoned to us, (and it did) we always looked forward to coming home to Hale Aloha Aina for peace and relaxation.

~ If you are seeking tranquility and seclusion is the place for you! ~

Hale Aloha Aina (House of the Loving Land) is a romantic Hawaiian vacation cottage nestled on eight acres of lush tropical flora. Truly the perfect honeymoon getaway or artist retreat for nature enthusiasts seeking a remote destination that inspires intimacy and adventure. Wood Valley is a hidden treasure on the southeast side of Hawaii offering upcountry living in an agricultural community. It is five miles from the town of Pahala which offers a hospital, drug store, gas station, library, community swim pool, market and Coffee Mill. At 2500 elevation, this mountain cabin offers a comfortable climate with warm sunny days and cool evening nights for a great night sleep. Besides the low humidity, there are very few pecky bugs... no torpedo cockroaches or swarming mosquitoes. As of 2016 the coqui frogs have migrated to the gulches of closer to the temple but you can't hear them from the cottage. It is still one of the last truly peaceful areas on this side of the island.

You will love it so much that you will want to keep it a secret, but be so rejuvenated that you will have to tell everyone!

~ Last minute and extended stay discounts. 10% Military and Kama'aina discount. A fresh tropical floral arrangement will greet you when you arrive at the Hale when available.

We couldn't have stayed at a more perfect cottage. The 8 acres were lush and well groomed. There were fruit trees galore- avocado trees, guava trees, banana trees, pineapples growing from the ground, even berries and cherries! I know I'm forgetting some fruit tree or bush.

The house is CLEAN. Immaculate! Its also beautifully decorated. The kitchen has all the utensils, plates, glasses and bowls you need to stay there comfortably. The bathroom is warm and amply stocked. The dining tables- yes plural- are comfortable. The porch is a bonus to this perfect getaway. There are comfortable Adirondack chairs (2) and a rocking chair at the dining table outside.

The porch is great for the beautiful sun rises as well as for gazing up at the stars late at night.

We're provided with a yoga mat, beach towels, a welcome note with thorough explanations to every corner of the house. Vests, rain coats, anything you can think of needing is already there- except the food. (Do yourself the favor of shopping for groceries in Hilo instead of Pahala.)

This vacation home is totally self-sufficient...Off the beaten path and off the Grid. Hale Aloha Aina is an ambassador for green living educating our guests on how simple it is to live off the grid using solar and propane. Solar runs the electrical appliances such as the lights, stereo, washer, dryer, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, etc. The stove, fireplace and hot water is operated on propane gas. Water is gravity feed so there is no need of a water pump. We even have a back up water source that supplies 500 gallons of water to the cottage in the event of an emergency. Previous guests have appreciated the experience and often recreate this system in their own homes. Extended stays may have to run the generator to power the system's batteries if there is no sun. The generator is very quiet and turns on with a key. Otherwise the system is efficient enough to just run on solar energy.

If for any reason you need assistance the owner is available to serve you. As you read the guests comments you will see how we take pride in creating the most enchanting playground for nature lovers. There are three acres of mowed lawn with an abundance of flora and tropical fruits that our guests have the opportunity to enjoy. Picking fresh fruit from the trees is one of the favorite things to do as well as just hanging out at the hale. There is so much to explore right in your back yard that many of our guests never leave the grounds.

~ Look for our links below to our Website with more photos and information about the area and our Big Island Cottage. We've uploaded a YouTube Video that will show you some of the beautiful flora on the property. Read Guest comment to see if this is the place you have been searching for. You will not be disappointed!

Hilo Airport (ito) is the closest airport to the cottage which is an hours drive. Kona (koa) is more than two hours away, but most of our guests arrive in Kona and enjoy the beautiful drive to the hale. We recommend that you arrive before dark, but if that is not possible our directions are very thorough since many of our guests arrive late. It is all part of the adventure and we haven't lost anyone yet! Directions to the cottage and check in information will be available once you have confirmed your reservation.

About Tom and Missy Powell

Tom and Missy purchased Hale Aloha Aina in 2001 and have rented the cottage full time since 2002. We have maintained an outstanding reputation for providing the highest standard in service, accommodations and amenities for a very affordable rate. It is truly 'heaven on earth'! We are grateful for the aina (land) and the love it nurtures in all of us!

As of March 2018 MIssy has built a tiny house on the property but Hale Aloha Aina is still private with a 3 acres to call their own. She will be taking over her workers jobs and be able to assist if needed. I will continue to share Hale Aloha Aina so that everyone can experience what personal freedom might look like!

Missy works personally with each guest to help them plan their dream vacation. Having been raised on the Big Island, she can offer experience and knowledge from a local’s perspective as well. She worked as a hygienist for 20 years and now has a small business as a metalsmith and jewelry designer. You can find my work under the name of Silver Falls Jewelry. In the future I will be teaching jewelry making so if that is of interest please inquire. Looking forward to seeing you!

Why Tom and Missy Powell chose Pahala

This is where we want to spend the rest of our lives! Besides the breathtaking beauty of having your own garden of Eden...Having pure spring water on tap and rich volcanic soil at your feet is a rare commodity when you 'LIVE' on the BIG Island. Missy was raised on the Big Island and knows the struggle with having to deal with water catchment and cleared land without any soil. The climate at 2500 elevation is very comfortable for us having lived in the NW. It's not too Hot and it's not too cold... it's just RIGHT!

What makes this cottage unique

THE ULTIMATE IN PRIVACY FOR THOSE SEEKING AN INTIMATE SETTING TO REJUVENATE, REKINDLE, AND RELAX!

This vacation rental home features solar and propane appliances with a fully equipped kitchen, washer & dryer, wireless internet and all the conveniences of a modern home. Some may say... 'Why rent a solar home when you can have electricity?' We say... 'Well why NOT!' It gives you a chance to see how easy it is to live 'Green' and self sufficient. Living off the grid doesn't have to be 'roughing it!'

What makes Hale Aloha Aina special...: If you have read our guest comments, you will already know that Hale Aloha Aina has captured the hearts and minds of travelers from all over the world. We have been offering this sanctuary to visitors since 2001 and our occupancy rate has been at least 85% which is astounding. There are several reasons for our success, but most importantly, we do our best to make sure that our home is what our guests are seeking. Our personal website is very informative and our blog gives additional information in planning their trip.

Guestbook comments from the owner

When you are driving to Hale aloha aina, you begin to wonder what you are getting into as you drive what seems like a long way up this country road (the first time; everything is always shorter once you understand the area). But as soon as you open the front door, you are like "wow, this is nice". And indeed it is. Well constructed, well designed, well situated, well provisioned, well decorated and I've never tasted such good water, so even the well is well. Centrally located to everything you want to see on the South side. Beautifully sunny every morning we were there (and the Caldera was quite active). Only a bit of vog one day; most of it seems to blow right around the west side and up to Captain Cook and Kailua (which I would not recommend staying in - we did later in the trip and were vogged in every day). The nights were full of stars, the mornings full of songbirds and I have never seen more beautiful horses anywhere than in Wood Valley and in other parts of the south island. Would I recommend this place to others? Without hesitation! Thanks Tom and Missy! This was money well spent and more than we expected! Oh, one more thing...kudos to their housekeeper...the place was spotless and dust free.

Amazing location and owner

  • 5 of 5

We spent the 2nd half of our honeymoon here and couldn't have been happier. The location was secluded but still close to the National Park and the Black Sand Beach, two must sees. It was so beautiful and the home had everything we could need. Missy the owner was so friendly and made our stay perfect.

We absolutely loved the cute cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We had a perfect stay at Big Island. The directions to the cottage and the cottage itself were perfect. Actually it's pretty easy to get there. As we arrived, we were welcomed with fresh tea on the oven and fresh avocados, citrons and ginger on the table. Everything was clean and tidy and all we needed was provided. The solar energy system worked perfect as well. We enjoyed staying in nature, listening to all the bird sounds, being adventurous and living quite ecological. As it was mentioned, there were no big grocery stores around, so we were glad to had already everything bought before we arrived. The cottage is like a little secret, but we will tell everybody how great it was! Thank you Missy, for offering such a gem to us. You are a wonderful host! All the best, Chris and Larissa

Owner's Response: I am so happy you loved Hale Aloha Aina! It's a safe harbor from the current activity of Kileuea and totally self sufficient . Being off the grid has it benefits since we never run out of hot water or electricity;) I hope you will tell your friends and family so that we can continue to share this slice of heaven! Mahalo;)

Romantic Retreat Even for Seniors

  • 5 of 5

This place is everything that the other reviewers talk about. Each year that we visit the island staying in Kona, we make a complete trip around the island participating in the annual quilters shop hop. This made a great stopping off point as we made our way to Hilo. Everything is truly as advertised. Do keep in mind the elevation makes this a slightly cooler spot than an ocean front accommodation. The weather was rainy so we were not able to enjoy the grounds as we had hoped but the cottage was cozy. Thanks to our hosts for a lovely spot. Another fond memory of our time on the Big Island. This is a unique and beautiful property, with exquisite attention to detail.

  • 5 of 5

We had such a wonderful, relaxing time and especially enjoyed sitting on the back deck listening to the birds, or viewing amazingly bright stars after a day of hiking and exploring Volcano National Park. The owners gave excellent instructions, and the housekeeper called after we arrived to make sure everything was OK, very welcoming. If you need fast internet and great cell coverage, this may not be your first choice. If you want to relax and be surrounded by beauty inside and out, then this is the place. We loved it!

Missile Crisis Averted - Staying here WON'T Nuke your wallet!

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for peaceful solitude and to get away from the "rat race" ......this is definitely the place. My wife and I stayed here during the "false missile alert," of which we were completely oblivious until we reached our second destination two days later near Kona. Be prepared for the scenic , but as described by the owners, adventurous drive up to the residence. As you make your way down the driveway you will be met by lush and manicured grounds filled with productive fruit trees. We gorged on oranges and avocados every day.The residence itself is very well appointed and impeccably clean, to be honest it looked like the housekeeper had scrubbed every inch with a toothbrush. Who by the way will be by to check on you shortly after your arrival and see if you need anything. If you have any concerns about being "off grid" don't worry, you won't even know this place is completely powered by solar energy. However, the accommodation is quaint, for a couple it is the perfect size and you could maybe even get away with one or two young kids but more than that might be a squeeze. Overall, this VRBO offers excellent value and we have stayed in a few of them here on Hawaii. As far as ratings go, this is a rare but truly deserving 5 star value considering what is offered at it's current rental price point. I would not hesitate recommending this place to anyone.......even Kim Jung Un.

Perfect Relaxation

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay very much. The property sits in a beautiful setting with complete privacy. The amount of flowers and fruit on the property is amazing. Keep in mind it is pretty remote, but if that is what you are looking for it will be hard to beat this place. The house itself is very nice and contains anything you probably need while there. The bed is very nice (a little soft for my taste) as well as all the furnishing and decor. We spent Christmas here and made some nice meals and enjoyed dining on the back porch. Bring some movies if you get bored easily as there are no TV channels (a few movies provided in the house). As far as side trips we enjoyed treks to the Green Beach, Black sand beach, and South Point (jumping off the cliffs is fabulous if the weather is right). We had stayed a few nights at the Volcanoes National Park previous to our stay here, but it would not be to far for day excursions from here and is well worth it. Given Christmas closures we didn't get to try some of the eating establishments in Naalehu but they looked very interesting. We certainly would like to stay here again given the opportunity.
