"Paradise Found!"

There should be a six star review category. Hale Aloha Aina exceeded our expectations in every way. What a gem of a property. First, the cottage is absolutely beautiful, warm and inviting. When we stepped into the house we instantly felt like we belonged here. The fragrant smell of fresh ginger blooms and plumeria was romantic and played on all of our senses. We couldn't wait to start exploring the property. What fun to find such a great variety of fruit trees and exotic plants. Bananas, limes, avocados, pineapples and guavas to name a few. This is a virtual garden of Eden. No matter how much the rest of the island beckoned to us, (and it did) we always looked forward to coming home to Hale Aloha Aina for peace and relaxation.

~ If you are seeking tranquility and seclusion Wood Valley is the place for you! ~

Hale Aloha Aina (House of the Loving Land) is a romantic Hawaiian vacation cottage nestled on eight acres of lush tropical flora. No other homes or people live on this property, giving you the ultimate in privacy and seclusion. Truly the perfect honeymoon getaway or artist retreat for nature enthusiasts seeking a remote destination that inspires intimacy and adventure. Wood Valley is a hidden treasure on the southeast side of Hawaii offering upcountry living in an agricultural community. It is five miles from the town of Pahala which offers a hospital, drug store, gas station, library, community swim pool, market and Coffee Mill. At 2500 elevation, this mountain cabin offers a comfortable climate with warm sunny days and cool evening nights for a great night sleep. Besides the low humidity, there are very few pecky bugs... no torpedo cockroaches or swarming mosquitoes. As of 2016 the coqui frogs have migrated to the gulches of closer to the temple but you can't hear them from the cottage. It is still one of the last truly peaceful areas on this side of the island.

You will love it so much that you will want to keep it a secret, but be so rejuvenated that you will have to tell everyone!

~ Last minute and extended stay discounts. 10% Military and Kama'aina discount. Guests staying one week or longer receive one bag of Kau Honu Java coffee grown right across the road from the Hale. Best coffee you will ever taste! A fresh tropical floral arrangement will greet you when you arrive at the Hale.

This vacation home is totally self-sufficient...Off the beaten path and off the Grid. Hale Aloha Aina is an ambassador for green living educating our guests on how simple it is to live off the grid using solar and propane. Solar runs the electrical appliances such as the lights, stereo, washer, dryer, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, etc. The stove, fireplace and hot water is operated on propane gas. Water is gravity feed so there is no need of a water pump. We even have a back up water source that supplies 500 gallons of water to the cottage in the event of an emergency. Previous guests have appreciated the experience and often recreate this system in their own homes. Extended stays may have to run the generator to power the system's batteries if there is no sun. The generator is very quiet and turns on with a key. Otherwise the system is efficient enough to just run on solar energy.

If for any reason you need assistance our grounds man, housekeeper and property manager are available to serve you. They are the friendliest people and live close to the hale. As you read the guests comments you will see how fortunate we are to have them and be able to provide this sanctuary for everyone to enjoy. Since it is their work, they take pride in creating the most enchanting playground for nature lovers. There are three acres of mowed lawn with an abundance of flora and tropical fruits that our guests have the opportunity to enjoy. Picking fresh fruit from the trees is one of the favorite things to do as well as just hanging out at the hale. There is so much to explore right in your back yard that many of our guests never leave the grounds.

~ Look for our links below to our Website with more photos and information about the area and our Big Island Cottage. We've uploaded a YouTube Video that will show you some of the beautiful flora on the property. Read Guest comment to see if this is the place you have been searching for. You will not be disappointed!

Hilo Airport (ito) is the closest airport to the cottage which is an hours drive. Kona (koa) is more than two hours away, but most of our guests arrive in Kona and enjoy the beautiful drive to the hale. We recommend that you arrive before dark, but if that is not possible our directions are very thorough since many of our guests arrive late. It is all part of the adventure and we haven't lost anyone yet! Directions to the cottage and check in information will be available once you have confirmed your reservation. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to call us in Bend Oregon pacific time from 10 to 10. We love to talk about Hawaii!!

About Tom and Missy Powell

Tom and Missy purchased Hale Aloha Aina in 2001 and have rented the cottage full time since 2002. We have maintained an outstanding reputation for providing the highest standard in service, accommodations and amenities for a very affordable rate. Our housekeeper and groundsman take extra pride in their work because they know how special this place really is...to us, our guests and for themselves. It is truly 'heaven on earth'! We are grateful for the aina (land) and the love it nurtures in all of us!

Missy works personally with each guest to help them plan their dream vacation. Having been raised on the Big Island, she can offer experience and knowledge from a local’s perspective as well. She worked as a hygienist for 20 years and now has a small business as a metalsmith and jewelry designer. You can find her work under the name of Silver Falls Jewelry.

Tom is a retired engineer of 30 years at Hewlett Packard. Currently he has a small archery business called Central Oregon Archery. He loves to teach Archery and volunteers most of his time to the communities youth.

In 2012 our son and grandchildren moved to Central Oregon after living abroad in the military for the past ten years. Having missed them so much... we have decided to stick around for while!

Tom and Missy Powell purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Tom and Missy Powell chose Ka'u District

This is where we want to spend the rest of our lives! Besides the breathtaking beauty of having your own garden of Eden...Having pure spring water on tap and rich volcanic soil at your feet is a rare commodity when you 'LIVE' on the BIG Island. Missy was raised on the Big Island and knows the struggle with having to deal with water catchment and cleared land without any soil. The climate at 2500 elevation is very comfortable for us having lived in the NW. It's not too Hot and it's not too cold... it's just RIGHT!

What makes this cottage unique

THERE ARE NO OTHER HOMES ON THIS PROPERTY WHICH GIVES YOU THE ULTIMATE IN PRIVACY FOR THOSE SEEKING AN INTIMATE SETTING TO REJUVENATE, REKINDLE, AND RELAX!

This vacation rental home features solar and propane appliances with a fully equipped kitchen, washer & dryer, wireless internet and all the conveniences of a modern home. Some may say... 'Why rent a solar home when you can have electricity?' We say... 'Well why NOT!' It gives you a chance to see how easy it is to live 'Green' and self sufficient. Living off the grid doesn't have to be 'roughing it!'

What makes Hale Aloha Aina special...: If you have read our guest comments, you will already know that Hale Aloha Aina has captured the hearts and minds of travelers from all over the world. We have been offering this sanctuary to visitors since 2001 and our occupancy rate has been at least 85% which is astounding. There are several reasons for our success, but most importantly, we do our best to make sure that our home is what our guests are seeking. Our personal website is very informative and our blog gives additional information in planning their trip.

Guestbook comments from the owner

When you are driving to Hale aloha aina, you begin to wonder what you are getting into as you drive what seems like a long way up this country road (the first time; everything is always shorter once you understand the area). But as soon as you open the front door, you are like "wow, this is nice". And indeed it is. Well constructed, well designed, well situated, well provisioned, well decorated and I've never tasted such good water, so even the well is well. Centrally located to everything you want to see on the South side. Beautifully sunny every morning we were there (and the Caldera was quite active). Only a bit of vog one day; most of it seems to blow right around the west side and up to Captain Cook and Kailua (which I would not recommend staying in - we did later in the trip and were vogged in every day). The nights were full of stars, the mornings full of songbirds and I have never seen more beautiful horses anywhere than in Wood Valley and in other parts of the south island. Would I recommend this place to others? Without hesitation! Thanks Tom and Missy! This was money well spent and more than we expected! Oh, one more thing...kudos to their housekeeper...the place was spotless and dust free.

Absolutely Amazing!

  • 5 of 5

This house is amazing. The property is gorgeous and provides peaceful quiet. Snorkel gear is provided and the nearest snorkeling is at Two Step or the tide pools. Be prepared to drive for snorkeling but it is well worth it. We didn't even leave the house that much because it was so relaxing to stay at the house! We found flying into Hilo very easy and convenient!

Perfection!

  • 5 of 5

This is a slice of heaven if you are looking for a secluded, off the grid Hawaii experience. Yes, you will have to do some driving to get to certain places but the drives are amazing with all the beautiful scenery along the way. My husband and I highly recommend going to Volcano Village to check out the winery, art store with the cute little One Cafe, quaint and great food. Also check out the Kiluea Lodge for the best burger ever! We also loved the Punalu'u Black Sand Beach park, you will see tons of turtles chillin' on the sand. Also recommend the Akasuka Orchid Gardens if you are an orchid lover like me....all different varieties are there and a great gift shop too. But at the hale one of the best things are the huge blanket of stars at night and the sunrises and sunsets are to die for. Loved the hammock for a late afternoon snooze and the outdoor shower to get all the sand off before coming in the hale, very convenient! The floua and fawna surrounding the grounds are amazing. The time of year we were there the fruits were not ripe enough to pick unfortunately, but plenty of road side stands & farmers markets to get great ones. All in all it was the trip of a lifetime for us, the hale was everything we hoped for. The one and only thing that kind of disappointed was that the flowers inside upon arrival were pretty much dead and it would of been nice to have fresher ones for us. Other than that, it was perfection!

Last Minute Gem

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I needed a place to stay while visiting the Volcano area of the Big Island. We booked this gem of a place last minute. We arrived after dark and even with taking a wrong turn, we were able to (thankfully) find the place after a long day of adventuring! What a quaint, quiet, peaceful place. I would love to have a home like this! I am excited to bring my husband back to spend a couple days in the future. Definitely off the beaten path. If you are looking for some seclusion and relaxation, this is the place. Lots of beautiful grounds to explore. We only stayed one night, but got to explore a little bit in the morning. Lots of guava trees everywhere as well as jackfruit, grapefruit, banana trees, etc.

It was a bit farther from Volcano (20ish miles) than I hoped and we drove over from Pahoa after biking to the lava in Kalapana - it was a long drive (like an hour and a half). It is pretty close to the Punalu'u Black Sand Beach which is worth visiting. Other than that, it was the perfect place to unwind and relax after a long day of exploring.

Thanks Tom and Missy for opening up your home to share with others! Will hopefully be back soon!!

The Property is pretty much The Hawaiian Garden of Eden!

  • 5 of 5

The pictures do not do it justice! The property is beautiful! It is really far away from pretty much everything, so if you want a convenient location for shopping and being around busy malls and lots of people, do not come here. If you want to feel very peaceful and feel 1000 times better after your vacation, this is the place for you! The cooking materials are awesome and the little town of Ka'u is great! This place makes you feel like you are the only Vacation Rental on the Island!

Fabulous home base for exploring the Big Island

  • 5 of 5

Although we had an epic finding the place after dark in a rainstorm, this is an absolutely perfect place to stay! It's several miles off the main road (Rt. 11) but a perfect place to relax, enjoy the birdsongs, and revel in the island's beauty. The cottage is equipped with everything you need, including good bicycles and snorkeling gear. You'll wake up early on your first morning to birdsongs and sunrise--straight out your bedroom window. The cottage is beautiful, wonderfully decorated and with everything you need, including kimonos. The gas-fired stove comes on early to take the cool edge off the morning, and the sound and flickering light are charming. Tom and Missy are instantly available if you need them, as we did when we had questions or had to admit that we had driven away and left the snorkel gear in the parking lot. Tom was gracious, and despite his recommendation, we replaced the lost gear.

The grounds are utterly beautiful, the outdoor shower is fabulous, and the chairs overlooking the beautiful eastward view made this an unforgettable vacation, one we hope we can repeat again and again.

Owner's Response: We are so happy you enjoyed all the amenities Hale Aloha Aina has to offer! Sounds like you enjoyed every last minute. Getting there is part of the adventure but rain and storm conditions can make it difficult find our place in the dark. We are glad you arrived safely and always recommend that you carry an umbrella and flashlight just in case. Thank you for replacing the snorkel gear. We use to invest in the best but you are not the only ones who have left the gear on the beach. Costco offers a decent set that fits most. The valley is a great place to ride bikes and jog. The country road is beautiful with very little traffic since this is a private residential area. Mahalo and hope you return again and again and again!

Paradise in Hawaii

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Hale Aloha Aina could not have been more perfect, THANK YOU Tom & Missy.. From the moment of starting the journey up Wood Valley road to the first glimpse of the Cottage, it was like your own piece of PARADISE.. The information for driving to Hale Aloha Aina was excellent and in great detail and the Cottage was exactly as described online.. We spent the next nine days in sheer Heaven, off the normal grid but with everything you could still want, electricity, water, great scenery, birds chirping and wireless internet.. There was limited cell service, but they have provided a land line for your needs if required.. Driving to the various attractions and sites we wanted to visit were quick and easy, some took a little longer to get there but the drive was part of the adventure.. Looking forward to a return trip to the Islands, and returning to Hale Aloha Aina...
