Relaxing Family Reunion
Our family of 13 from NH, DC, and TX had a wonderful week at The Manse - a step back in time large cottage in a perfect location to explore the Monadnock region. Even our one rainy day didn’t dampen our spirits as we played games, did jigsaw puzzles, read, took naps and prepared for more hiking the next day. A great time was had by all.

secluded stay
Loved that the property was so quiet and away from everything, and had absolutely wonderful scenery. The lodge is exactly that a "125 year old lodge" and was perfect for our needs. It's very large, and has all the quirkiness expected in an older home. Some of the pipes leak, some things don't work perfectly, etc. All in all, we had a great stay in a great location with all the comfort we needed. We could not get the Roku TV to connect to the wifi, but no one really seemed to miss TV for the week. We enjoyed climbing the mountain nearby (Monadnock...this mountain has no easy or moderate trails). Great views from the summit!

Something for everyone...
Aaron Millar says “the more we look for wonder in the world, the more the wonder of the world becomes a part of who we are.” I spent the week at Monadnock Manse finding wonder in nature, which is abundant there, and in my family. This was the first trip we took as an extended family and it worked really well for our group of 16, age range of 14 to 76. There were enough bedrooms and bathrooms for everyone's use though you needed to be mindful of showering or it could be a cold one for you. It's an old house so some quirks are expected; e.g. some doors didn't shut fully and sounds traveled clearly. Ear plugs are provided as are ample linens, blankets and towels. We congregated in the kitchen for meals and in the dining room for puzzles/games nightly. It was helpful having two refrigerators and a gas grill. The wrap around porch was magical with its views, calls of loons at dusk and guests, my favorites being a hummingbird and dragonfly. The ping pong table was also a hit as was the large green space that accommodated our hammocks and outdoor games. The walk through the woods to the dock was short but could be difficult for some as it's knotty underfoot and a little steep. Silver Lake is beautiful and we really enjoyed nearby Sunset Beach. Activities included lots of fishing, some biking/swimming, canoeing, going to a local farmer's market one day and to Harrisville Designs another, and poking around in nearby general stores. Thank you for a laidback and wonderful time.

Family Gathering
We returned this year for our annual family gathering of grandmother, siblings and adult grandchildren, ages 90 to 24. The place works well for us with one one comfortable bedroom on the first floor and lots of other sleeping options. The house is older and well-lived in. There were things for everyone to do - swimming, boating, sunning on the yard, sitting on the porch, games, hiking. We brought bikes and extra canoes to use when exploring ponds nearby. Two places we like to visit - the yarn shop in Harrisville and this year we went to the nearby Caterpillar Lab. That was very fun and informative. We cooked nearly all of our meals and found the kitchen worked well for us. The owner was responsive and helpful.

I live in Northampton, MA and work in the public health field. I have managed the Monadnock Manse since 2000. I have two grown daughters and a husband and we all love vacationing every season on Silver Lake with our extended family.

Why they chose this property

My dad who is in the picture (whose ancestors came from Nelson and Jaffrey) bought the property when he was 30 years old and spent every summer fixing it up so I have many memories of painting, climbing ladders, chopping wood and swinging a hammer. (We had fun too!) My mother was a really good baker, so blueberry pie was a summer favorite. Here in the picture I have a strawberry rhubarb pie for dad on Fathers Day. He loved sitting on the porch, looking out onto the lake and mountain in his later years.

This house, now called the Monadnock Manse was build in three sections (1889, 1900 and 1910) by Dr. George R. Dinsmoor of Keene, a veteran of the Civil War and a descendant of Governor Samuel Dinsmoor. Dr. Dinsmoor was a well-known surgeon of the time who lived in Keene. He sadly lived his last years suffering from paralysis and died at the age of 60. I believe that Dr. Dinsmoor enjoyed this house because it was a place for rejuvenation, relaxation and recovery.

The builder and designer was Cassius M. White of Keene. There were originally 49 double hung windows with 18 panes in the top sash and single pane at the bottom, two chimneys, eight bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. The original siding was dark weathered singles. The building materials were shipped up from Boston by train to the Chesham depot and then taken by a horse drawn cart to the site of the building.

The house was owned by Anna Louise Heath when my dad, Richard B. Hardy bought it in 1949. It was called “Ledge Lodge” because of all the granite rock around and under the house. In the 1950's our family re-named it Monadnock Manse and the lakefront was purchased so that we could have our own place for swimming, boating and fishing.

What makes this property unique

This summer home is a uniquely, authentic large cottage with the charm of the "On Golden Pond" setting. Spacious enough for three generations to gather for family vacations/reunions. Modern conveniences of Wifi, Roku for Netflix, and a sound system on the first floor add to the well equipped kitchen and dining area for accommodating larger groups. The porch is a favorite place for dining, conversation, ping-pong, yoga or meditating. Often the loons on the lake can be heard calling as they fly overhead.

There is fun for children with large yard for whiffle ball, tether ball, badminton, volleyball, or croquet. Lots of back roads for walking and bicycling; hiking trails nearby. The lake (2 miles long, 1/2 mile wide, and 90 feet deep) is spring-fed and wonderful for swimming, fishing, kayaking and boating. Small mouth bass and trout are often caught. In mid July-mid August , blueberry bushes surround the house and produce berries for your baking needs. Spring season has the advantage of long days and the fall season brings beautiful views of fall foliage where ever you look.

The surrounding area has historical villages to visit, music, theater and great restaurants. Keene is 20 minutes away and the best place for shopping and movies. We are 3 hours from Boston and 4.5 hours from NYC.
