Recent Updates: Newly installed seaweed mats have resolved the weed problem referred to in one of our reviews -- swimming is once again be a weed-free pleasure! Front porch overlooking the lake has been newly refurbished. And now with free internet, a Blu-ray/DVD player, and a 32" LCD TV receiving all the major networks over the air.

Private dock, boat launch and 60' of lakeshore. World class fishing and some of the best bike routes in Vermont. Extra features include a sleeping screen room, and a large game room which provides additional eating and playing space. Ideal for extended family vacation in summer or peaceful couples retreat in the spring and fall. On dead-end road surrounded by meadows, forest and 1 mile from Sand Dunes State Park and golf course. Approximately 35 miles North of Burlington and 60 miles South of Montreal. Great fishing, boating and relaxing. Open May -- October. Outstanding feature: One of the things our guests like most about our home is the large game room equipped with picnic tables and a sectional couch. Ideal for those occasional rainy days and dining anytime.

About Molly Comeau

Molly's family has summered here for over 70 years. Her grandchildren are the 5th generation to camp on the Poor Farm Road. Learning to swim and fish and water ski and sing around the campfire. They have also been introduced to astronomy in a big way as the current Grandpa has an observatory next door which he is happy to show off. Why Molly Comeau chose Alburgh

Our extended family long ago outgrew the original camp building that had been purchased in the mid 1940's and we were lucky enough to have this nearby property come on the market. We snapped it up and my brothers and their wives also bought summer places down the road. Summers spent on the lake are a precious part of our lives and we love to share the experience with others.

The road is named for the large farm built here in the 1850’s that was the 19th Century’s rough form of social safety net. The farm was abolished in the early 1900’s and the land surrounding this house became privately farmed until this day. The lake house you are staying in has an equally colorful history. Constructed with the materials at hand and receiving its water and fuel via pipes from the main farmhouse (still visible as the nearest white building to the north of the house), it was the tenant farmhouse built for the hired man and his family. When the farm no longer needed extra manpower, this house became a private year-round residence in the late 1950’s. Additions such as the screen room, porch, and garage were added at this time.

  • All beds have good mattresses and will be made up for your arrival. Bedrooms are off a pretty, old fashioned hall. Lovely lake and meadow views. Other sleeping area is an airy, private enclosed porch with a comfortable pull-out couch.

Beautiful old farm house right on the water.

We had a wonderful time! The house was very nice. The property was great and right on the water. The fishing was great and even with the wind we had the water was quite calm in the passage. We got to see the neighbor fly float planes in and out most of the day. The dock was very nice, we had plenty of room for 3 boats and could have had a 4th. I've stayed in many different houses in the area and this was by far the most affordable, don't let the price scare you.

Beautiful view, easy water access across road from house

Largely quiet spot with level shoreline and ramp for walking kayaks safely across road from farmhouse. Nice rockers on porch and comfortable double beds (not queen). Owners very accommodating to us when we arrived bringing flowers and quickly upgrading light bulbs where needed in kitchen and near chairs for reading. They kindly provided a pass to lovely Alburg Dunes State Park where swimming was weed free except for one day when algae spoiled the water. Swimming at house's dock limited to small area due to weeds.Tap water is from lake and not drinkable so you must bring/buy your own. Appeared to be good spot for fishing--just not end of August. Noticed no smoke alarms installed--does HomeAway or state of VT require them?

Lots to be desired, owners were very polite

To start this review I'd like to say that every interaction I had with the owners was very pleasant and they were both respectful and friendly at every communication. They were also accommodating to us having our old, lazy dog with us which was appreciated.

In regards to the house, we have spent lots of time in different rentals and lakehouses and this one really just felt neglected in regards to cleanliness. The kitchen had just about everything you'd need to cook short of a cutting board. The sofas/beds were alright but definitely felt quite dirty, we found old wrappers for crackers/pepperoni under the sofa in one room. The tap water, while we did get warned it's not good for drinking, simply had a very rotten smell on which made it very unpleasant to shower in. We also lost water one morning when we were preparing for a birthday party which really hurt our travelling efforts. I believe the owners made every effort to fix it as fast as possible but it still ended up being close to half a day without water for 8 people and the smell seemed to increase after the fix, half of our party left early due to it.

The swim dock/private beach area, which is located across a road on the front of the house, are pretty much unusable outside of sitting with some chairs and a fire. The vegetation combined with the rocks make it useless for swimming or fishing. The dunes located about 5 minutes away has a pleasant sandy beach that we went to every day for $4/adult and $2/kid, which was probably the best thing about the trip.

As far as location it has a decent general store right across the bridge with the closest true grocery store being about 25 minutes away. There are a few local shops and plenty of beautiful scenic areas that were fun to drive around and see. We'll definitely be back to the area but most likely not to the particular rental.

Owner's Response: We're very sorry to hear that your stay with us didn't meet your expectations. However, we can assure you that we have the property thoroughly cleaned every week between guests. We're sorry about the items under the couch, but surprised by your remarks about the beds: all the linens had been freshly washed as usual. We treat the farmhouse like our own home and enjoy staying there ourselves when we have the opportunity. We work hard to keep it well maintained and fully equipped, and appreciate your positive comments on the kitchen. The brief water outage was regrettable, but we've since added a second, more powerful pump, which will ensure the problem doesn't recur. Since the water supply is fed from the lake, a slight weed smell is normal, however we have added a filter which should reduce this. In response to your feedback, we have also purchased very large underwater mats, which have once again enabled swimming right off the dock. Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your stay.

Great vacation gateaway!

We had a wonderful time! The house is located very close to the Sand Dunes, which we took advantage of almost every day. We have stayed at one of the Comeau's properties for several years now, and they are a great family. Really helpful. Wonderful vacation.

good location with limitations

this is in a good location for access to some lovely state parks as well as a day trip to Montreal. our arrival on a 90 degree day was unpleasant as the house was closed up and roasting. many of the windows were barely operational and it was difficult to contact the manager for assistance. the lake was not accessible from the dock across the street due to heavy vegetation in the lake which was disappointing. we would not stay here again.

Owner's Response: Dear Kathleen, I am sorry that your stay at our home did not meet your expectations. Rest assured that we will attend to our windows as we prepare for this season. I do apologize particularly that you felt it was difficult to reach me when problems arose. Unseasonably warm weather is always difficult to deal with. The problem with the lake weeds was disturbing to all of us who live on and love our lake. The entire Alburgh Passage, which includes our shore, was engulfed. We worked very hard with officials from the State of Vermont to understand the unusual extent of the problem and to plan for any remedies that might be available. In the final analysis it was determined that a warm, wet spring and rapidly falling lake levels in the summer were a perfect storm. Unfortunately there was nothing to be done but try our best to harvest weeds as they came in. I did offer to pay for trips to Alburgh Dunes State Park for those guests whose stays were most affected. Fising, fishing and then some more fishing!

My family and I had a great time ....even with the lake being flooded! We have never seen the lake so high. We enjoy fishing from the shore with a little kayak fishing mixed in. Caught tons of fish.

The house was great and super close to the lake. Owners are very friendly and accommodating.

We have been coming to poor farm road for years but this was our first time at this location and we had just a wonderful time as we always have.
