About Jenny Bremner
We wanted to bring up our two children in the countryside. We love the sea and walking on the moors and were attracted to North Devon because of its away from it all feel. We like to support our local towns, Instow and Torrington which have all the shops we need and are very friendly. We all play alot of music, Alastair -violin and flute, Jenny -cello and double bass , Cathy - piano and banjo and Jim - guitar and drums and have got to know lots of musicians locally.
Jenny Bremner purchased this Cottage in 1994
Why Jenny Bremner chose Huntshaw
The farm had been in the same family for many generations and when we discovered it nothing much had changed. We even found the old cooking pot which used to stand above the open fire! We fell in love straight away and the farm's renovation has given us a life long project ever since!
What makes this Cottage unique
We love living on top of a hill , there's lots of light and big views. We are away from the coastal tourists yet close enough to decide to go for a quick swim in the evenings after work! Whenever we feel in need of culture our local lively art centre , The Plough, gives us live music/cinema/theatre etc so we have the best of both worlds. Also there are lots of cosy pubs serving real ale where we can go after our out door adventures!

Perfect tranquil retreat.
Despite the rather wet weather we had a wonderful relaxing weekend with our dog Tom at the shepherds cottage. (Fortunately he is a big fan of all things water so we embraced it with him).
Just a short drive from dog friendly beaches and woodland walks. The cottage is fully equipped for self catering. We particularly enjoyed the views and watching the sheep and swallows with a glass or two of wine.
We would definitely love to return .
Really lovely little cottage, with amazing views of the Devon country side. Really peaceful in a lovely location.
Cottage itself is fully equipped, comfortable, and furnished with some lovely little details! Enclosed garden perfect for dog owners. Our two spent hours just watching sheep!! Would thoroughly recommend.
Glad you had a good time.
Very best wishes
Best place to be
First class We had a lovely time staying here. Dogs made very well. We had a busy time visiting friends staying somewhere else so was not the most restful stay. Going back again soon for a more relaxing stay a real gem a wonderful setting so peaceful.
Lovely to have you! Great dogs!
Lovely week! Enjoyed every moment walking, sleeping, eating & exploring! Last holiday just the two of us & where better to spend it. Beautiful cottage & gorgeous location! Plenty to do near beaches & beautiful walks! Thanks for having us! Bed was super comfortable first time in ages I’ve had a decent nights sleep (being 30 weeks pregnant).
So glad you had a good time ! Exciting times for you both - hope to see you again after the little one arrives.
Shephards Cottage is a very quaint, cosy well equipped cottage with beautifal viwes overlooking a valley. Although the pictures online were slightly misleading. I have a mobility problem and find steps a struggle. There are six steps from the gate down to the lawn and path with only one small rail on the right. Also we booked it as the shower and double bedroom are on the ground floor. Whilst the bed was extremely comfortable it was rather high, with restricted access either side. The shower was a good foot high above floor level.
Having said all that, it was not advertised as disable friendly so one cannot complain. Overcoming these problems we had a wonderful few days there. .
I’m so glad you had a good time. There is a note in the description about the 5 steps into the garden in the description but I can see the ten inch step into the shower isn’t mentioned. It is tricky to remember everything - thanks for pointing that out. Hope to see you again in the Autumn.
Best wishes Jenny
Our favourite place!
We returned to Shepherds Cottage for the 3rd time in four years. The cottage itself is lovely, everything you need to enjoy your stay: comfy beds, warm showers, well-equipped kitchen and a great enclosed garden. The owners are fantastic, there if you need them but never intrusive. The toaster broke whilst we were there and it was replaced within an hour. Always love the little surprise of gingerbread men provided on the doorstep towards the end of our stay! The cottage is surrounded by fields and has beautiful views. Room for the kids and the dog to stretch their legs and build dams in the stream at the bottom of the hill (a very talented dog!). Before we left we rebooked for later in the year. We love this place and can’t recommend it enough.
Yeah that dog did a fine job! Glad you had another good time!
The Shepherd's cottage lies In the heart of Devon countryside between Exmoor and Dartmoor National Parks , five miles from the Atlantic coast , away from the tourists yet close enough to beaches and surf ( Westward Ho!, Saunton Sands , Instow, Croyde ) as well as miles of free National Trust coastline ( great walking and stunning views!)
Close by, the pretty market town of Great Torrington still has family butchers , grocers and bakers (oh the aroma of fresh baked buns!) as well as pubs and cafes and its own small market. There is also the lively Plough Arts Centre with live music, theatre and film and it's own restaurant.
Popular nearby attractions include the magnificent R.H.S. Rosemoor Gardens, Dartington Crystal Glass Factory, the Barnstaple and Bideford Pannier market ( food and antiques), Torrington 1646 (civil war re-enactments) and for the more active the Tarka Trail cycle route (30 miles of scenic cycle path), North Devon Surf School, kite surfing, sailing, golf (9 beautiful courses), PGL and Skern Lodge out door adventure centres, quad biking, paintball survival, fishing (freshwater and sea), climbing wall, the Milkway indoor children's adventure centre , The Big Sheep farm experience for kids and grownups!
There is plenty of outdoor and indoor entertainment to suit all age groups and all weather and alot of it is free!
