The Nellie Donagan House was built in 1912 and enlarged in 1978. It is thoroughly modern on the inside yet retains its last-century charm. The cottage is on a dead-end gravel road and is surrounded by grasslands or cedars on three sides. From the spacious front deck guests can sit under a shady umbrella and watch the deer graze in the undeveloped fields and wetlands while hummingbirds buzz close and red winged blackbirds sing their musical song.

The kitchen is modern and fully stocked with culinary appliances, more of which are stored in the spacious pantry. The pantry has a washer and dryer, a utility sink, and can act as a mudroom with access to the house from the back yard.

The dining room seats 6 comfortably and has a large picture window with a view of the fields. The living room has comfortable furniture and a bay window, which looks out through a stained glass panel to one of the gardens. A TV screen is available for streaming.

The office has a desk and table and provides a quiet, private place to catch up on business or keep current while on vacation. There is high-speed, 100Mbps internet for streaming movies, video calling and lightning fast browsing. We have a monitor and a printer in the office. There is also a twin bed.

The master bedroom has a queen bed and dressing area with a dresser and ample double closets. The master bath has a shower. A private, enclosed deck is accessed from the master bedroom and has a door to the backyard. The other bedroom has a queen bed, a dresser and a closet. The hall bath has a bathtub. A third, twin bed is in the office.

A charming gazebo and the outbuilding we call The Dollhouse are both off-limits to guests at this time.

There is a fenced garden and ample parking. The overall feeling is of comfortable country living and serenity. The grounds are mostly open to the deer who frequent the back yard especially, and many birds flock to the feeders in the front. We hear frogs and sometimes coyotes at night, and find it lovely and relaxing.

The Neighborhood of North Beach is charming, quirky, and full of walking paths through woods and between streets. North Beach and Chinese Gardens are a 12 minute walk away and the many trails through Fort Worden are just beyond that. The Fairgrounds are across the fields to the south, and Port Townsend’s Historic Seaport District is a 10 minute ride by car or just a little longer by bicycle. The night sky as you walk to North Beach at night is spectacular!

It's an expansive, peaceful setting with everything you might want to make your visit special.

This house is our home, which we have rented out for several years while we are away sailing during the summer. We've had great experiences with guests, and trust that you will treat our home with care, as much of the decor has great sentimental value.

We are required by the City of Port Townsend to rent in blocks of no less than 29 nights, which keeps the neighborhood genuine and serene. When you rent the Nellie Donagan Cottage, you'll be a North Beach Resident. As our gift to you, we'll have a housekeeper come in during the middle of your stay to do light housekeeping. Mowing the lawns is also included.

Please, no smoking inside and no pets.

A wonderful return
We were happy to spend another early summer month at Nellie Donagan House, surrounded by meadows full of songbirds and near to walking trails on 3 sides. The home is comfortable and well-supported by the thoughtful owners and local house and garden staff. For us, the sunny deck and peaceful surroundings are deeply relaxing.

peaceful country home
Nellie Donegan House is a beautifully kept home on the edge of the North Beach neighborhood. The meadows on three sides afford quiet, privacy and a host of birds and local wild life. It is a short walk to endless trails as well as the beach and Fort Worden. It provides lovely space, inside and out for a couple and few friends or a small family. And as someone who has rented properties for many years, I've never encountered such thoughtful owners.

Cozy cottage by North Beach!
We really lucked out finding this cute, cozy little cottage to stay in! It had everything to make for a comfortable stay including Netflix! It was also nice and warm as so often we’ve found the older Victorian homes to be very chilly. Jennifer was kind enough to bring in an extra floor heater for us which was appreciated. We really liked the location as it’s a nice walk to North Beach and the many trails surrounding the area. It’s only 10 minutes from downtown, the Farmers Market, many restaurants and grocery stores. We would not hesitate to stay here again!! It’s very good value for the money and we loved it!!

The house was amazing.
The house we stayed in was beautiful. The beds were very comfortable, all the rooms decorated very nicely. It was easy access to the water and walking distance to Fort Worden. We really hated to leave.

Quiet, pretty setting, roomy house, walkable neighborhood
We spent a month here in June, and really liked the house. It's nicely decorated, well equipped, and roomy. The neighborhood has a semi-rural feel, and was very quiet. The house is a short walk to North Beach, where you can walk for miles along the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It's also a short walk to Fort Worden, which is full of great walking trails, and has a nice pub called Taps and an excellent restaurant called Reveille. We often biked to downtown Port Townsend, which is a wonderful, charming town.

The Nellie Donagan Cottage is our home.

We travel on our sailboat during the summer and are pleased to be able to share our home with you. We've spent the last several summers sailing in the Aleutian Islands, Prince William Sound, and around Kodiak, Alaska. This year we'll bring the boat home to Port Townsend and park her in Point Hudson.

The art displayed throughout the house was created and collected primarily by my late mother and me.

My mother, Hilary, was an artist working mostly in textiles and ceramics. She spent her entire life creating and collecting art and a portion is displayed in our home.

We've had really great experiences with summer renters, and hope that you'll come for a month or two!

Why they chose this property

The Nellie Donagan Cottage was the result of a search for the proper home in the Port Townsend area, a place that I’ve always wanted to live.

Early twentieth century homes have been a particular interest to me. The home, the site, grounds and out buildings made the Nellie Donagan Cottage the right choice.

The two-story Doll House in the back of the property has my library upstairs and a sewing room downstairs. The Dollhouse and the Gazebo, which houses garden tools, will be off-limits and locked to renters this year.

What makes this property unique

I think the Nellie Donagan Cottage stands out amongst the Port Townsend Rentals because, most obviously, it requires a 29 night stay. You actually live here when you stay here. It's also an entire, free-standing house, with only one neighbor, in the midst of grassy fields, all while being pretty close to downtown. There's an enveloping country feel here and with the deer and the birds is quite peaceful and lovely.
