Beautiful property, wonderful hosts!

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed at many VRBO/Homeaway/Airbnb places over the years but Christine and Mark's home was by far the best in many ways! First of all the communication prior to our stay was outstanding, not only did they pick us up from the airport (and drop us off on our last day), Christine arranged a rental car for us during our stay. Mark was waiting for us at the airport and provided us with a delightful drive and information about the island on our way to the house. Christine welcomed us to the property which they had stocked with wine, food, milk, juice, butter, bottled water and a freshly baked loaf of bread from the local bakery! The house is beautiful, well represented on the website and spotlessly clean and inviting. We so enjoyed coming back in the afternoons for a cooling plunge in the pool (which Mark discreetly cleaned once during our stay while we were exploring the island). And the village was magical, good food, great local shopping and fishermen selling their catch in the morning hours from the back of a pick up truck! I can't recommend this house and the hosts enough. I would and have recommended them to anyone interested in exploring Santorini! Thank you so much Christine and Mark for making our stay a wonderful experience!

A beautiful cave home in the charming village of Magalachori.

  • 5 of 5

This was such a unique and beautiful cave home. Plenty of room, and a gorgeous outdoor area and pool with wonderful lighting for chats in the evening overlooking the bell tower. A very charming village with such friendly people! Mark and Christine were very responsive and proactive hosts. Would recommend it highly.

An amazing holiday

  • 5 of 5

This was our first visit to Greece and we were not disappointed. Santorini is truely a beautiful island.

Can we just firstly say thank you to both Mark and Christine for being such attentive hosts and making our stay so enjoyable and stress free.

Alba Lilly is a traditional cave house which has everything you need and more. Much time and effort has obviously been spent making this a very luxurious place to stay and keeping the house spotless and clean. It is one of the best we have stayed in. We loved it!

The village itself still retains the traditional village feel and has a relaxed atmosphere. There are many good restaurants within walking distance and the bakery is excellent. All the staff and people we met during our holiday were very friendly.

We split our time visiting towns such as Oia, Thera and relaxing at Alba Lilly. If you enjoy walking, the trek from Thira to Oia along the costal path has outstanding, breathtaking views ( wear trainers!) great photo opportunities. We also visited the Venetsanos winery for wine tasting and light lunch, good choice. We also wanted to see the island from the water, Christine recommended a 5 hour sunset cruise, which we had initially looked at before but were a little dubious about the cost. We decided to go ahead with the luxury trip and I'm so so glad we did! Money well spent and I would do it again.

We for the first time ever did not hire a car and managed the whole week using local buses and walking. A big thank you Mark for collecting us and dropping us to the airport.

We are already looking to return in 2018. Considering I am fussy and hard to please , I can honestly say Alba Lilly, the village of Megalochori and the stunning scenery and feel of Santorini has won me over.

More then we hoped for,

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay. The home was clean and well taken care of. The pool offered relief during the hot weather and everything we needed was available to us. Mark and Christine were tremendous hosts and were available should we had needed them ( which wasn't often as we had everything we needed). The village was the perfect setting away from the bustle of Santorini. We would definitely stay here again if we find our way back.

Delightful Cave House in Megalochori

  • 5 of 5

Alba Lily is a delightful cave house in the charming village of Megalochori. It is small and quirky, but has every modern convenience and has been beautifully decorated and furnished with taste by Christine and Mark. Outside it has a delightful courtyard with dining area and small pool, once again decorated with pot plants and tasteful wall plates. Upstairs there is a barbecue and on the roof terrace very comfortable built in sofas and a table with views over the village and surrounding countryside and a very beautiful domed church almost next door. We spent every evening watching the sunset from there - marvelous!

Megalochori itself is off the main tourist route but has a small mini market and about six or seven restaurants within walking distance. It is a very traditional village, and if you are lucky, you may get involved in one of their festivals with a bonfire in the street and Greek dancing etc. This has occurred twice for us when visiting in mid June. There is a very good bakery on the outskirts of the village that sells all types of breads and irresistible pastries, plus delicious homemade ice cream, takeaway dinners and grocery items etc. It is open all day every day until midnight and is just a five minute walk from Alba Lily. The bus stop to Fira is right outside the bakery and another mini market is close by.

These are some of the highlights, but the best bit is that you get Mark and Christine as well! They are helpful and generous, and the fact that they live next door, means that if you do have a problem they are quickly on hand to deal with it.

We highly recommend Alba Lily for a cave house experience in a very traditional Greek village, and you do not need to hire a car.

Car: recommended

Megalochori is one of the most peaceful and traditional villages on the island of Santorini. The property is a short walk to the village square where there are three excellent restaurants offering Greek and international food. You can't fail to notice the large number of wine tasting places here and indeed this village is at the heart of the island's wine making industry. Many of the bigger facilities, like Boutari, are on the village's outskirts among the vineyards.
