Spectacular Riverside Cottage In Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty

About the property

Unique 4.5-bed/3-bath hideaway

Waterfall Cottage is a completely unique vacation rental property at the heart of the spectacular Delphi Valley in south west Mayo, Ireland - and directly on the beautiful Wild Atlantic Way.

This extraordinarily scenic area is on the northern fringe of the beautiful Connemara region and just over the border from county Galway. Killary Fjord is less than two miles away and the nearest village is the pretty seaside hamlet of Leenane, Co Galway.

Surrounded by one of Ireland’s largest Special Areas for Conservation and in a National Heritage Area, the four-bedroom holiday home overlooks a pristine river in a stunning wilderness setting.

A dream holiday cottage that was formerly part of the famous Delphi estate, this deceptively large rental property is a reconstruction and extension of two 19th century cottages, merged into one home of great character.

There are no other buildings in sight.

Clad in local stone, roofed with traditional Welsh slates and fully insulated to modern standards, Waterfall Cottage has all the charm of a period property with all the benefits of modern reconstruction.

The cottage sleeps eight people in great comfort and an extra two bunk beds can be added on request.

There are four principal bedrooms (three with one large bed and one with twin single beds), plus an optional extra bunk room. There are three bathrooms, one en-suite with the master bedroom.

There’s a modern kitchen and a large day room equipped with satellite TV, wi-fi, an eclectic library and a DVD player. The piece de resistance is the spectacular 440 sq. ft. lower level River Room with its terrace right beside the river, offering amazing views over the water to the wild scenery beyond.

The cottage has oil-fired underfloor heating and a large wood-burning stove.

Why Peter Mantle chose Ireland

Extraordinarily beautiful wilderness location.

What makes this cottage unique

No other building in sight. Right beside pristine salmon river. Spectacular lower floor river room. One of the last unspoilt parts of Europe. Fly-fisher's paradise.

Waterfall Cottage s a fantastic place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at Waterfall cottage. The property is well equipped and the position is idyllic. The downstairs river room is a lovely place to relax with a book whilst listening to the river tumbling along. We had some great trips out in the local area; Kylemore Abbey and Victorian Walled Garden were well worth the trip and we spent a lovely day on Inishboffin Island.

The cottage was well presented and the caretaker called us on the first night to check that everything was satisfactory. Jane and Martin provided an excellent booking service and were quick to respond to a couple of queries I had prior to the trip.

I would definitely recommend this property to anyone looking for a relaxing holiday with great scenery.

Fabulous, spacious cottage in spectacular location

  • 5 of 5

We have just spent a wonderful, relaxing week at Waterfall cottage. The location is relatively remote with spectacular mountain scenery on all sides and a river running alongside the property. The cottage itself is spacious and homely and has everything you might need for a week's stay, from games and books to wellies and kitchen utensils - I was even able to bake my son a birthday cake. My children loved their rooms, especially the youngest (Lucy) as her's had her name on a cushion, and a hockey stick on the bathroom key - perfect! The river room is indeed the jewel in the crown. I spent quite a bit of time there reading in the glorious natural light and even just stepping in for a minute was joyful. The lack of mobile reception/wifi was a bonus!!

The Cottage was perfect! Great quality family time in a breathtakingly beautiful part of Ireland.

  • 5 of 5

Upon arriving in the luscious green Delphi Valley, our excitement grew as we approached our riverside cottage. Passing the Delphi Adventure Resort and then the Delphi Fishing Lodge we knew we were close, and looking forward to getting to spend time at both of these places. We only passed the cottage up once! Not bad for our first time, and hopefully not our last! We loved staying at Waterfall Cottage.

The Cottage was even better than the photos. My teenagers were so excited when they got out of the car and knew that they got to stay in this incredible place and awesome cottage for the next week.

There are many activities to enjoy in the area and just a short drive from the cottage. When we did venture further, we didn't mind the drive time because its all so scenic. On days you just want to relax the cottage is stocked with plenty of books and movies and a great kitchen. Two things that we did very close by and enjoyed very much, were the Zip/Treck activity at Delphi adventure Resort and dinner at Delphi Lodge.

We so enjoyed our time in Ireland but especially the area of Delphi Valley in The Waterfall Cottage.

If you are in Ireland for an authentic Irish experience, then this is the place for you. The scenic views were breath taking and the house was as advertised, spacious, warm, and inviting. Can't wait to visit again! Thank you to the owners of this beautiful property for allowing us to create memories that will last a life time.

Exactly as advertised and exactly what we wanted

  • 5 of 5

My family enjoyed this idyllic cottage for a week in July, 2014 and it was pure heaven. We have traveled to the Connemara area many, many times and usually stay close to Ballynahinch Castle (a gorgeous and wonderful spot as well). This time, we wanted to be more out in the country and on our own. The house is quite basically furnished and that is the only criticism of: the furnishings need updating. The kitchen is a dream. I cooked several big dinners at the house, including leg of lamb and roast chicken etc. There was not a tool, pan or appliance that I needed and could not find. The fireplace is lovely, the view from every window, porch and deck is glorious. The bedrooms are spacious and comfortable. The housekeeper, Geraldine, is lovely, helpful and quite good at what she does. We had to call her once or twice for odd things and she was "Johnny on the Spot."

The house is 8 twisty miles from the closest town (Leenane) which may be off-putting to some, but we loved its remoteness. That said, a short walk from the cottage is Delphi Lodge where we enjoyed a spectacular lobster dinner prepared by their chef, Pascal. The folks at Delphi Lodge are the salt of the earth. They let us in on their Lobster Dinner night, even though we were not guests of the Lodge for a very reasonable price. We used their fishing guide when the boys and men in my party wanted to fly fish a local loch. I won't even tell you all the kind things the folks at Delphi Lodge did for us, because I would hate for them to feel that they had to live up to it all the time. Suffice to say: Stop in at Delphi Lodge. Buy some smoked salmon and try to get a dinner reservation. From Waterfall Cottage, we were able to go deep sea fishing out of Westport, explore Cong and Ashford castle, walk all over the Kylemore Abbey grounds, have dinner at Ballynahinch's special restaurant called "Owenmore", had a great meal at Mitchell's in Clifden and we drove to the coast where we flew in a puddle jumper to the Aran Islands and hiked up Dun Angeus. One day, I stayed home at the cottage. I read, worked a jig saw and then walked to the Delphi Adventure Lodge where there is a spa. No kidding. A lovely spa. I got a massage, had lunch in their little café and booked a ropes course activity for our 14 year old boys. The boys loved thee ropes course and were dying to try their sea kayaking adventure, but we ran out of days. Can't say enough good things about this lovely place.

Close to excellent salmon and trout fishing and surrounded by popular hillwalking trails, Waterfall Cottage is just 20 miles from the pretty Georgian town of Westport with its championship golf course, the spectacular Westport House and a range of interesting shops.

With a spa just a mile away, and with horse-riding on beautiful sandy beaches, golf, surfing, scuba diving, fly-fishing and sea fishing all available in the area, there are plenty of activity options.

The nearest village, Leenane in County Galway, is eight miles to the south-east and the small town of Louisburgh is eleven miles to the north. The beautiful Killary Fjord is just two miles away and there are a number of spectacular sandy beaches, some good for surfing, within a short drive of the property.

The Delphi Valley and Doologh Pass are among the last truly unspoilt areas of western Europe and represent a nature lover’s paradise. Otters, pine martens, badgers, peregrines and mountain hares are regularly sighted and the river beside the property is home to many dippers and the occasional kingfisher.

For basic food shopping, the essentials can be bought from the village store in Leenane, where petrol is also available. Louisburgh has a small supermarket and in Westport there are two large supermarkets and many other shops.

This is a dream hideaway with easy access to all the spectacular scenery of Connemara and Mayo.

Waterfall Cottage is just 90 minutes from Knock International airport, 2.5 hours from Shannon and 3.5 hours from Dublin. Galway city is just over an hour away.
