Condo, 2 Bedrooms + 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6), Wi/Fi, Best Partial Ocean View
Ginny is now a retired Nurse, having practiced in several specialties and taught Nursing at the College level for many years; 20 yrs at San Jose State Univ. (Professor) and Sonoma State Univ. She loves out-doors, back-packing, swimming, and since our Honeymoon (photo) snorkeling. Glen is a retired business executive of Pharmaceutical and more recently Biotechnology companies. He has a pharmacy degree and an MBA. Growing up he participated in several sports and later focused on water-skiing, snorkeling, and back-packing. Both of us were born in California--she in Oakland, he in Santa Cruz. We both attended college at UC Berkeley and UCSF. Glen got his MBA at Harvard. Our most favorite vacations are to Ginny's family cabin in Yosemite and our Hawaii properties. We live in a house that we completed building in 2000 on Glen's family mountain-top property in Soquel (Santa Cruz), CA
Glen purchased this Condo in 1999
Why Glen chose Kailua-Kona
Over the years Glen traveled to Hawaii many times, mainly Oahu, Maui, and Kauai. Ginny and Glen went to several Hawaii islands on their Honeymoon in 1985. (Picture is at Kona Village) We have owned a time-share in Waikiki, a lovely condo at Poipu Beach in Kauai, and several vacation and long-term condos on the Big Island. Our favorite place to visit became Hawaii for the sports (e.g. snorkeling), sites all over the island, variety of scenery, birds, and the fact that this island is not yet ruined by Tourism and population. We now own properties only in KONA.
What makes this Condo unique
We stayed at Kona Shores annually since 1985 (now over 30 years). We loved the PRIVACY of the North wing of this complex. In 1998 the lovely northwest, first floor, corner unit became available. Glen had seen it while helping a renter fix screens. We were lucky enough to buy this unit. Of course, every one in the mainly long-term renter/owner units was envious about the large corner unit directly above our 1 BR. A year later it became for sale at about $50,000 below previous asking prices. Again, we were lucky enough to purchase this unit. We love the open, spacious, above it all, good partial ocean view impact of the unit and the very private location within the complex. (This unit was built by the original contractor for Kona Shores for himself; he also built the special corner unit below, reportedly for one of his relatives.)

The condo was the perfect size for the 4 of us. It was equipped more than expected with snorkel and beach gear, lots of linens, and cooking utensils, even a cooler. It was also very quiet. It was a wonderful place! The only problem we had was communicating through Vrbo .
The outside appearance of Glen and Ginny’s condominium complex is unstriking, as it appears the property was formerly an apartment building. However, Glen and Ginny’s personal unit, room 216, is remarkable for its low rental cost and value. It is very clean and very spacious, plus it is exceptionally quiet because it is a corner unit. The two bedrooms are ample size with full bathrooms in each. The kitchen is furnished with all the comforts of home; I,e., pots and pans, dishes and glassware, eating utensils, and cooking ware galore. The living room is also huge and clean, as well as the very spacious outdoor patio, which is equipped with all the beach chairs and mats, ice chests, and swimming equipment any family would need. My wife and I would stay there again in a heartbeat. A very sincere thank you to Glen and Ginny for allowing us to stay at their condominium unit. It is a hidden treasure because the street side appearance of the complex is so plain. “You can’t judge a book by its cover” applies to Glen and Ginny’s unit.
This review is "right-on", except the building was originally built as a Condominium Complex back some time in years. Since it was one of the first on Alii Drive in Kona, the great location with sizable ocean-side pool and short distance to town (1 mi. to 1st Commecial business, Bongo Ben's) are possessed by few others! Great get away location!
This was our first time with a VRBO. The property met our needs. It was very spacious, clean and quiet. The pool right on the ocean was a plus. We loved to go down and watch the sunset from the pool deck. The condo has a large shaded wraparound deck which was a great place to drink morning coffee. Property is at the 1.5 mile marker of Alii Drive so close to "downtown" Kona. There were several extras the owners provided that added a nice touch - beach towels, chairs and umbrellas, snorkel gear etc.
Very welcoming! Thank you!
Been visiting Kona Shores 216 regularly for over a decade...
Nice pool area.
Easy access to Kona and beaches.
We had a family visit to Kona and the location here was perfect to get to everything without feeling like we were right in the middle of it all! The property was nice.. loved the pool right on the ocean!! The condo was very comfortable and had EVERYTHING we needed! Air conditioning was great.... only used at night which was all we needed! Kitchen well stocked for sure and all convenient!
