Unique And Charming Traditional Stone Cottage In Picturesque Surroundings

Bedrooms 3
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Sleeps 5 in triple bedroom, double bedroom and bed loft.

Turrock Cottage is situated along the Wicklow Way, on the east side of Stookeen Hill, with views over South Wicklow and North Wexford. The cottage is within a farmyard, and close to the main house where we live. We are close to Shillelagh and Tinahely villages, and the cottage is an ideal base for exploring the delights of both Wicklow and Wexford. Avoca, the Ballykissangel village, is just 25kms away while Dublin is 70 kms away. Both the medieval city of Kilkenny and Glendalough are less than an hour’s drive away. An ancient oak forest, Tomnafinnogue Wood, is a beautiful place to walk, any time of year and the beautiful Altamont Gardens and Huntington Castle are always worth a visit. Horse riding, fishing and the Coolattin Golf Club are all available locally. No visit to Turrock is complete without a visit to the Dying Cow pub where you can relax and look at the views, hear some traditional music being played by local musicians and while away the hours. For walkers, we are on the Tinahely to Clonegal leg of the Wicklow Way and are close to the Tinahely loop walks which cater for walkers of varying fitness levels.

Our traditional stone cottage sleeps 5 in comfort but can accommodate 6 if 3 sleep in the downstairs bedroom. There is a triple room, a double room and a single bed loft above the wood-burning stove fireplace. The dining area/kitchen is very spacious with a high ceiling allowing plenty of light and is complete with a large Belfast sink and traditional pine dresser. The large dining table seats 6 comfortably on traditional Bentwood chairs, but will squeeze in more if required. The table is perfect for hosting long, lazy breakfasts and cosy, evening meals while the stove with its dramatic granite chimney breast heats the radiators throughout the cottage keeping it warm and comfortable. The kitchen is fitted out with dishwasher, fridge, microwave and washing machine. Local carpenters and wood-turners have crafted the many presses, worktops and lamp stands giving the cottage a warm, rustic feel. For wet or winter days, a CD/TV is available as well as a small library with a section of books, magazines, jigsaw puzzles, playing cards and Scrabble for those who crave excitement! A small sitting room with sofa and doors opening onto a raised stone deck continues on from the kitchen area. Outside furniture is available for those long, hot summer evenings when all you want to do is look at the magnificent views while having a cup of tea or glass of wine. Internet is not always reliable.

The bedrooms have exposed timber flooring while the kitchen and bathroom have traditional black slate tiles. The wet room/bathroom has a traditional Belfast sink and walk-in electric shower with stones foraged from Wicklow and Wexford beaches that massage your feet while you wash away the stresses of the day.

Sit out on the raised stone deck area and admire the views, listen to the donkeys serenading and the roosters and goat providing the perfect soundtrack to your day. Later in the evening, you may spot deer, see bats leaving their ‘batcave’ for their nightly flight; in early May you may be lucky enough to hear the cuckoo. Our hens and ducks provide perfect eggs for breakfast and our 6 ‘outside’ cats may come looking for attention. Hector the goat is always pleased to see visitors and Hamish and Alex, our donkeys, are delighted to see new people who might give them the odd carrot. Scooby, our dog, is very friendly and cannot get enough attention.

Warm, friendly and authentic!

  • 5 of 5

This is the REAL deal Irish cottage, but instead of cold stone walls this Irish cottage has been lovingly restored to give you an authentic experience with cosy warm insulation a real bonus to two South African's used to warm weather. A beautiful area and the closest town of SHILLELAGH which has to be the most perfect, tidiest, cleanest little town I have ever seen offers a small grocery shop as well as a local pub. Try the Dying Cow close by as another option for your watering hole and lots of castles to see in the area. The lovely couple who own and run this holiday let are wonderful and are close by to assist without being intrusive. Mario the cat makes himself at home and rules the roost until the geese come out at night then he retreats with a distasteful look on his face. Simply wonderful place! Do not hesitate for a minute just book! Remember to take some extra carrots for the donkeys. Thank you Deirdre and Ciaran so very much for everything.

Amazing place to stay, Ciaran and family were very helpful with everything. Beautiful views of the mountains and a very peaceful environment in the Irish countryside. Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting a unique place to stay in Ireland. Five stars.

Amazing stay in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We have just come home from a 7 day stay in this beautiful cottage. We haven't got a bad word to say about the place. It was an absolutely beautiful location, very well placed for exploring the south east of Ireland. Even Dublin wasn't a million miles away, easily reachable in an hour and a half.

The cottage itself was so lovely. Pictures on this site and others do not do it justice. The interior is beautiful, kitchen and living area is lovely and much more spacious than we expected from the pictures. Upstairs sitting area has beautiful views of the fields and valley. We really enjoyed having the fire on in the evenings also. Everything we needed was there in one shape or form, from washing machine and dishwasher, to wellies that were available to borrow, to kitchen utensils and basic supplies. All of the cats were adorable, (especially Mario, one of the friendliest cats we have ever met!) as were the donkeys who we enjoyed visiting every day and feeding a carrot or two!

Ciaran and Dierdre were excellent hosts, very welcoming and more than happy to advise on the area or point in the right direction on things to do. Scones were a lovely touch and we thoroughly enjoyed them on the first day. Thank you so much!

Overall a 10/10 stay in a beautiful cottage- we will highly recommend to all our friends and family and will be hopefully returning in the future!

Little glimpse of Heaven on Earth!

  • 5 of 5

Having visited Ireland before 3 yrs prior-and having already done the "touristy things"-we were especially excited to return to just relax and enjoy small hikes every day in hopes of a much needed recharge to the soul. Finding Turrock Cottage among the plethora of those available is what the Irish would say was a "bit of luck!" From the start with its picture perfect setting and wonderful host Ciaran..we knew we'd found our "home away from home!" To be honest, we've thought about what we could say about our stay and there's simply not enough words to describe the beauty and peace that we found here. Going on vacation is always hard, when you have to leave your furry family members back in the states and we thought it'd be the hardest part of our trip abroad, but in steps Mario, their amazing lil kitty who stole our hearts and filled our cottage stay with another feeling of "home." Upon returning each evening after a day of hiking/discovery, there was Mario waiting for us on the front step! The cottage itself was equipped with beautiful crockery and everything a cook would need. Our evenings were enjoyed in front of a warm, crackling fire with Mario purring happily after a saucer of milk, as we listened to some of the collection of Diedre's hauntingly beautiful Irish music she has recorded on several cds that are available in the sitting room. As a family, we all felt our stay at Turrock was everything we had hoped for and more. If you are looking for a quintessential Irish stay, Turrock Cottage has it all! Located on a gorgeous farm property, you will find yourself surrounded by the lush verdant Irish landscape and adorable animals (especially the donkeys, Hector the goat and of course, the infamous Mario!). We could not recommend this place more and have already shared our sentiment with all our friends and family. If you are looking for a little slice of Heaven on Earth...Turrock Cottage in the quiet, peaceful hills of Shillelagh is your place! Our Many Thanks to Ciaran for his wonderful Irish hospitality...we Loved Our Stay! Blessings to your family and hug Mario for us...we miss him!

Adorable cottage. Phenomenal hosts.

  • 5 of 5

Loved our stay. Ciaran and Deirdre are amazing hosts who gave some of the best conversation I had my entire 2 weeks in Ireland. The wooded area was fun to walk through, and we adored the donkeys, cats and birds. It was a great ending to an amazing vacation!

Perfect Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Our little family visits Ireland every couple of years. It is a phenomenally beautiful country with the warmest and kindest of people; even in the cities, people are nice. We always enjoy where we have stayed, typically in B & B’s as we bounce all over the country. You have the pleasure of meeting people from all over the world, in a sweet setting, where you feel as you are being cared for by an aunt or grandmother. This time we elected to have a base, and rent Turrock Cottage in the Wicklow mountains, we were in need of quiet and calm, and a more restful/peaceful holiday. What a brilliant choice; we absolutely hit gold with this choice. We could not have asked for a better place, and people, to recuperate and regenerate after a tough year, and have some desperately needed important family time. Ciaran and Deidre are perfect hosts, the welcome feeling we had while staying there cannot be articulated, the way they made us feel and more so the way Cameron (8 year-old) feel was very special. Allowing him to tag along and feed and corral the critters made him feel important, needed, and excited. He now says he wants geese for Christmas. The cottage is perfect and charming, would not change a thing, beds were so cozy in the cold weather. Kitchen fully stocked with all the necessities to cook and clean, with a fireplace to keep the cottage warm, and the shower/bathroom is just right, and clean, with plenty of hot water. The view is truly priceless, and to top everything off, Mario the perfect vacation pet. We will absolutely be back for another holiday, (next Christmas maybe). Thank You for a really lovely stay.
