The Mani region of the Peloponnese in which we are to be found is a vast land mass, technically an island, separated from the Greek mainland by the Corinth Canal and ( along with Ancient Corinth) is a key landmark if driving from Athens.
Being the most Southerly part of mainland Europe it enjoys a fabulous warm climate whilst remaining lush green as the surrounding meadows and olive groves are fed throughout the winter and spring by streams running off the Taygetos mountains, often still capped by snow even in early summer, that are the backdrop to our village.
The area is amongst the richest in Ancient myths and archaeological sites including ancient Olympia site of the original Olympic Games and because of its remoteness throughout history, the area has retained its natural charm without the impact of tourism that has affected so many other beautiful places.
The dramatic coastline if filled with little coves and beaches, lazy fishing villages, and taverna's serving the freshest great value food and wines. This area is often referred to as 'Real Greece' or 'Forgotten Greece' and we are really happy for it to stay that way.
Spend lazy days around the cottage, walking the paths and old donkey tracks amongst the olive groves, head into the mountains and the villages untouched by time or head down the hill and in just a few minutes you can be exploring the coastal villages of:-
Kardamili with its vibrant bars, coffee houses, taverna's and fabulous seaside setting - our favourite beach is here and has olive groves and a brilliant taverna to provide a lazy lunchtime break from the sea and the sun. It's a secret we don't want to share with too many so when you book we'll give you directions to our favourite, breathtakingly beautiful , watering hole by the sea!
Stoupa - with two fabulous safe sandy beaches, backed by places to eat, drink and relax or just watch the would go by and all in the setting that was the inspiration for 'Zorba the Greek'.
visit the Kalogria beach and see the little cottage he stayed in at the edge of the bay.
Agios Nicolaos - simply the most lovely unspoilt fishing village, unchanged for decades with taverna's and bars set around the small fishing harbour. A great location to sit with a coffee in the morning and watch the local fisherman land their catch and sell it straight from the boat on the harbourside.
Pyrgos sits on the very edge of a plateau backed by the towering Taygetos mountains and surrounded as far as you can see by olive groves with old stone paths meandering through them - a perfect backdrop for a easy walk which in spring and early summer are full of wild flowers and herbs - the scent is intoxicating!
And yet , it's just a short drive down the hill and you are on the beach.
Lemon and Lime is approached via a donkey path through our village having parked your car under the shade of the olive trees at the roadside above the village. it's just a 2 or 3 minute walk to the cottage - there are no cars inside the village proper which makes it both safe and incredibly quiet - you can hear the little owls calling to one-another of an evening !
The property is securely gated and very private yet within the village centre. our outside spaces are like small garden rooms, courtyard and shady garden areas with Mediterranean flowers, citrus trees and a giant tumbling bouganvillia .
About Keith or Teresa
Lemon and Lime is loved owned and lovingly cared for by us- Keith and Teresa ( that's her tucking into lunch on our sun terrace - not a bad view eh!!. We have a number of properties in the Cotswolds area of the UK where we live and work - you can take a look at one of our rental properties there on www.windfallcottage.com We have spent a lot of time renovating and restoring old properties, Teresa is trained in interior design - you can see her touches everywhere.
Keith or Teresa purchased this cottage in 2004
Why Keith or Teresa chose West Mani
We first travelled to the Peloponnese in 2003 in search of our dream bolthole in the sun after spending several years searching elsewhere in Greece and trying in vain to buy in Corfu. If you come to stay at Lemon and Lime you will likely drive the mountain road from Kalamata towards Stoupa. As you start to drop down toward Kardimili you will suddenly see the Messinian Bay and the coast South with Stoupa , and Pyrgos of course, appear below you - shimmering deep blue seas and fabulous olive dappled hillsides - it is stunning - You will see right away why this is such a special place , no words will be necessary to describe it -just take it in and love it as we do.
What makes this cottage unique
When you open the gate into Lemon and Lime it is like stepping into a little oasis of Mediterranean colour - when you walk onto our sun terrace and look around you the views over dappled terracotta tiled rooftops to Stoupa below and the shimmering Aegean Sea you will see why this place became such a special place for us and, hopefully, for you to enjoy also.
