About the property

House and Barn, Dordogne

The property in two parts, the original house and the stone former barn nestles amongst a charming cluster of honey-coloured stone houses, surrounded by walnut groves, at the end of a no through road. The two building set up is attractive to those people who wish to holiday in company with friends or family but maintain their own space.

This property would perfectly suit two families or couples, or a multi-generational family reunion, who can be together yet have independent facilities, or a couple on their own who wish to get away from it all and enjoy the space, peace and calm of this delightful place.

In high season it is expected that the property be rented as a whole unit, however, in mid and low season it is possible to rent only one of the units if that is preferred.

With a 5 minute stroll, you reach the banks of the Dordogne. This river is recognised as one of the 15 cleanest rivers in Europe. The nearest swimming beach is at Cenac-et-St-Julien.

Whether you're planning for lazy days at the house with relaxing walks to enjoy the stunning surroundings, or wish for a more active holiday, St.Julien is an excellent place in which to base yourself.

The property does require a fair level of mobility from its visitors as due to its age there are stone and wood stairs throughout the two buildings although the main bedroom of the stone barn is on the ground floor.

We prefer any family with young children stay in the main house where there is space for cot, high chair etc. and safe access to the garden.

From the living room in the main house doors open onto the pretty, enclosed garden on one side and onto the courtyard on the other. Stone Barn has doors onto the courtyard and a private terrace with table and chairs accessed from the mezzanine bedroom.

Both charcoal and gas barbecues are provided on the property and there is an open barn in the garden that can serve as an outdoor bar for night time or al fresco dining in the shade in the day time.

About James and Aude

James Oxford the owner and your host, is an art director and conceptual artist from Los Angeles.

James and Aude purchased this house in 2013

Why James and Aude chose Cénac-et-Saint-Julien

Your host simply couldn't resist the film set like backdrop to this charming property and on returning to LA he missed no longer having castles in his backyard. He returned to buy this place! As he has found and confidently expects you will too, his house offers the perfect base for discovering the stunning and dramatic scenery of the surrounding area with its chateau, caves, restaurants, riding stables, golf links, river trips and so on and on.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We are impressed with the completeness of the both the barn and the house. The music system, jeu de boules set in the garden, tables and chairs in garden and courtyard etc. The courtyard and the garden have lovely flowers and trees. We have very much enjoyed the gas bbq.The kitchen is very well equipped.

As we lived in the south of the USA and in Asia we wondered about not having airconditioning and we are pleasantly surprised that this is not needed with the temperature cooling down at night. We have been to many places all over the world and been to several places in France in summer and winter and we are very impressed by the variety of outings at very close distances. We loved the walk to the river.

Perfect holiday home!

  • 5 of 5

We had a magnificent week with friends. The weather was hot, so I don't know what we would have done without the pool. The house cools down nicely at night and we had a daily spectacle of balloons overhead- morning and evening. We would definitely recommend this as an excellent spot for 6-8 people. The house is well equipped so we ate at home most evenings. The walk to the town and to the river is lovely....a perfect holiday!

Great place for two families on holiday together

  • 4 of 5

Lovely house and barn in quiet, charming area. Short drive to restaurants and sights.

Great place if both houses are rented by combined party, if one had been rented by strangers, it would have felt a bit cramped in the outside area.

Both houses were beautiful inside and outside. Could have been better equipped with extra towels, sheets, china and glasses. Big minus is lack of air conditioning, it was difficult to sleep in the heat, and with all windows open to try to get a draft, the mosquitos got in. Would definitely have installed AC if it was my house. Good with washer/dryer/dishwasher though.

Owner was very friendly when he came around and had good tips for things to do and see. Minus again for losing the wifi (because of lack of payment) when we had 5 days left in the house, and were unable to get hold of both the owner and the manager until we were on our way home.

All in all a lovely stay on a beautiful property in great area, but with a few drawbacks and hiccups.

superb gite in a great location

  • 5 of 5

We (two couples) stayed in the main house and it was lovely. It was comfortable, immaculately clean, and well-equipped. The bedrooms were roomy and the bathrooms had great showers with reliable hot water. We ate meals out but also cooked and grilled, eating most of our in-house lunches and dinners sitting in the open grange behind the house There we were treated to the view of cliffs across the river as well as the view of the house itself with its beautiful stonework and wisteria.

The location is perfect with the hamlet of St. Julien in a meander of the Dordogne with a single road coming into it. That meant no tourist hordes and pleasant walking right from the house. But, the gite is also ideally located for reaching Domme (don’t miss this village), Sarlat. Les Eyzies, numerous chateaux and gardens (Marqueyssac, especially), and not bad for Rocamadour and Le Gouffre de Padirac. We did not partake of water sports but innumerable canoes, kayaks and cruise boats could be seen on the river.

Good restaurants abound with le Petite Tonnelle across the river in Beynac, and Quatre Saisons and le Grand Bleu in Sarlat for a bit upscale great experiences. For your own cooking, there is a huge new LeClerc in Sarlat and good open markets in St. Cyprien and even Cenac.

The area is super for a visit and we cannot recommend the gite highly enough.
