About William Whitman or Sallie Davis
We fell in love with this Victorian home in the center of Lewes historic district where we and our children could walk everywhere! Our growing family continues to love it and enjoy it year-round. We live near Washington, DC and are available by cell phone anytime.
William Whitman or Sallie Davis purchased this House in 2004
Why William Whitman or Sallie Davis chose Historic District
Located on one of the original house lots in Lewes, the older part of the house was built in the 1880's and then added on to around 1900. While the kitchens, baths and systems are modern, much of the original charm of the house has been preserved. We have many guests who return every year; people who come to get married in town or at the house; many guests with three generations; reunions; and other celebrations. The house is within four blocks of many great restaurants and bars, great shopping, the tennis courts, ball field, and public dock, the historic sites in town, churches, and City Hall, and just a short walk further to the boat yard, the town beach (by the Dairy Queen) and more. The Henlopen State Park beach is a 5 minute drive with great parking, a concession stand with changing rooms, hiking trails, historic exhibits and access for off-road vehicles. We have friends and neighbors in Lewes who help us care for the house when we're not there and something goes wrong.
What makes this House unique
The carriage house is like a second living room so your party can divide up as desired. Barbecues on warm nights in the very private back yard with the sliding doors open to the carriage house living area where there is music or tv are divine.

Great house and location
We had a wonderful time with a full house and space to relax and enjoy our stay. Kitchen well equipped to cook and eat at home. Our friends from Bilbao appreciated being walking distance to stores and beach.
Ideal Lewes Vacation Home
We loved our stay at Bill and Sallie's home. It is perfectly located in the heart of downtown Lewes -- easy walk to many shops, restaurants, the canal, etc. Less than a mile to the beach - we typically biked or drove there and to the nearby state park too. The house is spacious and was perfect for our family vacation with extended family. The kids loved the 3rd floor bedroom, while the adults had plenty of space among the 2nd floor bedrooms and the lovely carriage house. The house and yard are very well maintained. We can't wait to go back to Lewes!
Fantastic location, perfect for sharing
Not only was this home right in downtown Lewes, but it was clean, comfortable and spacious. The owner's thoughtfulness -- from nightlights to bath mats to beach equipment -- made it easy to stay here. The kitchen was well stocked and there were books, puzzles and DVDs. The charming carriage house made it perfect for sharing with another family. We plan to return!
Great house in a perfect location in town!
This was a great house in the town of Lewes. Lewes is a super cute town. The guesthouse and the main house were even better than I expected. We had two families with three kids (teenagers) each and the layout worked very well. Be sure to rent or bring your own towels and sheets. We cooked in a lot, but there's quite a few great restaurants (pricey though), ice cream shops and a coffee house. The stores are very pricey. Groceries are too. We went to Lloyd's (which is a small local grocery). The employees were very kind but you wouldn't want to go there expecting to buy much. It is small and expensive. We also drove to Rehobeth to the Giant grocery and that was pricey too. I would recommend ACME. Its only a few miles away and no more expensive than the others. Bait shops are super expensive too.
There was a great outdoor area with a nice grill outside the guesthouse where we enjoyed our dinners. Even though it was near 100 degrees during our stay (thanks to an unusual and extreme heatwave), the patio was nicely shaded with beautiful landscaping/plants/trees. There is a beautiful canal across the street if you exit the property from the back entrance. We rented a kayak for the week and took turns going out. We also rented bikes. There's amazing bike paths but riding in town can be tricky during high traffic times. The bike path from Lewes to Rehobeth is my favorite ever! A lot of it is through a wooded area but before and after that, there's not much shade. It does get tricky once you get to Rehobeth but we figured it out. You have to ride with traffic briefly. Sallie and William were very quick to respond to any questions that I had and we are very grateful to have had the opportunity to stay at this house. I miss the front porch, the quiet evenings outside, the bike paths, the beach, the beautiful canal, adorable town, and the kids miss walking next door for ice cream every night!
P.S. There's a great winery called Naussau Valley that has a great local bakery nearby and a bike trail that will take you there. I didn't get a chance to do that trail but would love to! We drove to the farmer's market at Naussau on Sunday. Every Sunday 12-2, I believe. You can also do wine tastings which was fun!
Perfect spot for our family of 10
It is a lovely house in a great location in town; right in the heart of the shops, restaurants and historic buildings. Lewes is a charming town full of history, beautiful houses and gorgeous gardens (a favorite of mine!) It has plenty of room for us to spread out. Our grandaughter slept in the carriage house and the four children hung out there in the living room to play board games, chat, etc. We loved the patio in the very back where we had cook-outs and we also really enjoyed the front porch in the evening. And of course we made several visits to the ice cream shop only four buildings down. The people in Lewes are very friendly and the owners of the house were very responsive to some questions I had. We took our bikes with us and people took turns riding to Cape Henlopen State Park which we loved. It is a wonderful beach, very clean and the park is lovely...bike trails, nature walks and a fort which the guys in the family visited. My husband and I are from Albany which has a very old Dutch history (settled in 1609) so we enjoyed exploring the historical museums in the city. There was something for everyone and we all had a lovely time.
Overall best vacation ever.
The house is located immediately adjacent to the downtown shopping and restaurant district with something for everyone - fine dining, clothes, antiques, art, fine crafts, toys, ice cream, wine and beer, two excellent coffee houses, furniture, housewares, beach supplies, post office, banks, and more - all within a few blocks. The gate in the backyard opens directly onto Front Street and the Canal, the new Canal Park, public tennis courts, and fishing and boating facilities. There is ample street parking in front of the house and two dedicated spaces in back. Walk to the town (bay) beach- perfect for young children or go to Cape Henlopen State Park ,a 5 minute drive and an easy 15 minute bicycle ride from the house. It is a truly fine National Seashore Park with a beautiful beach, concession stand, showers, bicycle and nature trails, a seashore education center for the kids, lifeguards, pier fishing, soccer fields and more. Lewes is a year-round destination!
Other Activities: Boardwalk, great restaurants, minigolf, shopping
Golf: Several nice golf courses are nearby (the closest is on Rte 1 North) and mini-golf on Rt1 1 South and in Rehoboth Beach.
