About Cecilia Zino

I was born in Stockholm in 1954, but have lived for the last 30 years in Madeira, Portugal. My husband is British, and we both never tire of holidays in Northern Portugal, where there is always something new to discover in terms of places of natural beauty and historical or ethnological interest.

Why Cecilia Zino chose Viseu Region

We first came across the villages of Anta and Mazes in the beginning of the 1990s,

and the experience changed our lives for ever. We had never before come across a place where you could imagine yourself to be in the 6th century AD, both by the looks of the houses, the methods of agriculture and by the way people dressed. We were blown over and full of zeal to preserve this fantastic place. Since then we

have bought some of the old houses and recuperated them to be as cosy and comfortable as we ever could. Our idea was to create employment for the people of the village, so as to keep it alive. So far however, the younger people tend to go abroad to find work, so the unique scenes of the shepherds with their flocks of sheep and goats will eventually disappear.

It has been an uphill struggle also with the authorities. We strived to have the place

declared as national heritage, but so far without success - and the wind turbines which now surround Anta, are an example of this failure.

Our sincere advice is: Come and enjoy this place while it still exists, because one day it will be gone for ever! And if you buy local produce while you are here, you will also be helping to preserve this unique village!

What makes this cabin unique

Peace, beauty and authenticity - a place to be yourself and to meet a people who are themselves with no pretences; a friendly and welcoming people, who are generous despite their frugal living.

Do you like donkeys and goats? This is the place for you! Do you like pre historic remains? This is where you can discover them - ancient graves, dolmens, ruins…

Do you like swimming under waterfalls? It's cold, but you can do it here. Do you like hiking? These hills are perfect! Do you like photography and painting? You can't get better motifs than these! Do you like wine and cheese and smoked ham and sausages? The wines of the Douro are excellent, and so is the local food.

It is situated in an area where the Portuguese nation started, and where there are visible remains even from times that preceded the nation. From Roman bridges to the church of São Pedro de Balsemão (7th century), from Arabic fortresses (Lamego)to monasteries where the templarians left their marks (Salzedas and São João de Tarouca), from mysterious hermitages (Castro Daire and São Pedro das Aguias) to splendid cathedrals and churches (Lamego) - there is so much to discover. Do not miss Anta, the abandoned village just up the road (20-30min walk), Ucanha (30 min drive) and Salzedas with its new museum in the cloisters.
