Chamonix is a year-round resort town, steeped in alpine history and renowned for skiing in winter and alpine mountaineering, hiking and parasailing with famous alpine peaks such as Mont Blanc, Aiguille Vert, Les Grands Jorasses and the Drus.
It is accessible to hikers and mountain walkers of all levels. Lift systems in the valley bring you up into the high mountains quickly, and numerous well marked walking paths exist to explore, all the while enjoying gorgeous mountain views.
Please be sure to check lift opening schedules during your intended visit with the "Mont Blanc Natural Resort" site who run the lift system. The months of May and November are usually considered "low season" with some lift closures. Skiing is weather dependent, so plan your holiday after research.
By car you can also make a day trip through the Mt Blanc tunnel to nearby Courmayeur or Aosta Italy and view the castles and Roman ruins in that valley followed by a multi-course Italian lunch or dinner.
Local SNCF trains and free Chamonix buses bring you up and down the valley to visit the neighbouring towns of Vallorcine, Argentiere, Les Houches and Servoz which together comprise the Chamonix Valley.
Also an easy drive to Annecy, set on a lake with a beautiful medieval town centre or to Martigny or Geneva Switzerland (train service available) for museums and art.
Other Activities: ice climbing, glacier walking, ski touring, rock climbing, thermal baths
Golf: Chamonix has an 18 hole golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones Senior. It has beautiful views of the Mont Blanc range. Details in English on the Chamonix golf club website: http://www.golfdechamonix.com/index-en.php The golf course has a very good restaurant on site available for lunch or dinner (reservations strongly recommended).
There is another nearby golf course above Courmayeur Italy in gorgeous the hanging alpine valley of Val Ferret (car required to access from Chamonix). Several wonderful traditional mountain restaurants are available to visit in that valley for a typical northern Italian lunch or dinner after your day out on the course. Details available in English on the Courmayeur Golf website : http://www.golfcourmayeur.it/
Ski: The local Compagnie du Mont Blanc (http://www.montblancnaturalresort.com) operates the ski lifts in winter and summer.
The 'Unlimited' ski pass includes all the lifts in the Chamonix valley and Les Houches, nearby Courmayeur Italy, St Gervais, Les Contamines and Megeve. The "Le Pass" includes all the main Chamonix valley lifts, but not the highest lifts accessing off piste black runs and is suited for beginner to intermediate skiers.

Why Robert and Gen Farwell chose Chamonix City Centre
This is a unique small stone building in Chamonix - around 300 years old and it was also our first home in Chamonix for two years while we renovated it. We were attracted by the centre riverside location, the sense of having a quiet oasis in the busy town centre - close to everything yet private and hidden from noise. We also loved the intelligent room layout, the fireplace and the naturally insulated metre thick stone walls as well as the quality of the original construction. We renovated the interior to add Italian tiles, ceiling lighting, replaced the old open fireplace with a more efficient closed glass door model, and replaced the old kitchen as well as adding a new WC and storage room with a large modern water heater to the back bathroom in 2017.
What makes this Apartment unique
The unique location of our apartment at the river's edge, tucked behind a larger historic small building means that street noise is non-existent yet you retain all the advantages of being in town centre. The rooms are not sterile square bricks, but in a building with built with stone, wood and character. It is an oasis of peace, and stays cool in summer thanks to the glacially fed river and original thick stone walls. The cast iron and glass fireplace also serves to ecologically heat the apartment while being better for the environment than an open fireplace.
