About this property

Entire 3bed/1bath Cabin on pond - Sleeps 5

Alton Pond is a privately owned, seven acre spring-fed pond with a beautiful earthen dam. We are at the top of the watershed and head water for the Fay Brook. The pond is twenty-five feet at its deepest point, and is home to migrating ducks, geese and stocked trout.

Summer (late May-early September) Explore the pond on any of our human-powered canoes. Dangle your feet in the water on the floating dock or hop in for a swim or watch the stars. For a quiet and shady picnic, you can walk or paddle down to Boles Beach, named for our wonderful neighbors. When you adventure out, be sure to visit the local farmers markets or our neighbors for essentials likes fresh vegetables, eggs or flowers.

Fall (mid-September to late-November) A wonderful and popular season to visit for the changing trees that reflect off the pond, migrating water fowl and the active trout making ripples. Locals festivals and apples picking are favorites, as well as hikes up to Kibling Hill.

Winter (December-February) We sleds and snow shoes you can use. If you enjoy cross-country skiing, we are 1/2 mile from a VAST trail crossing. Our local family ski resort, Quechee's (unaptly named) Suicide Six is just 25 minutes away, and Killington Ski Resort is 45 minutes away. The roads and driveway are plowed and well kept in the winter. Please only use a 4-wheel drive vehicle with appropriate tires for snow tires.

On the grounds just outside our cabin is a fire pit with benches and chairs and on a clear night the milky way and Big Dipper. We enjoy summertime fires and you are always welcome to join us for s'mores and a good possibility of music.

The Cabin

An airy great room features a new kitchen with floor to ceiling windows and sweeping views of the pond. Enjoy summertime meals on the large covered deck with grill and dining area. Rest, read and relax in one of three cozy bedrooms There is a full bathroom and a washer-dryer in master bedroom. The kitchen has everything needed to enjoy a long stay. If you have any special requests or needs, please be sure to let us know.

In winter, the cabin stays toasty with a wood-fire stove. If you are unsure or have never used a wood-stove, it is best to visit during warmer months.

Beautiful Pond, Lovely spot!
Our family came for 2 weeks. Our hosts were wonderful and very welcoming. We swam every day. Listened to the ducks, and frogs, watched the turtles. Saw eagles fly over head. It was a very relaxing get away, in a beautiful spot. We will be back!

Serene and rustic
My family had a lovely time at this peaceful & private log cabin on Alton Pond. The cabin is rustic in all the best ways – cozy and comfortable. My sons loved the water trampoline newly installed in the pond as well as all of the other water sports available – paddleboard’s, inner tubes, kayaks, etc. My husband enjoyed the large canoe and catch & release fishing. My little son loved spotting turtles especially the baby ones hiding in the shallows. The owner, Chris, who was next-door was extremely kind and helpful. He led us on a creek walk and invited us to a next door drum ceremony. We enjoyed an outing to Strafford, hiking down to the Old City Falls and visiting the Justin Morrill historic homestead. We also appreciated streaming movies on the smart TV during the one rainy day. The cabin is rather remote on a dirt road. Basic services are a good 15 to 20 minute drive. If you’re looking for nightlife and excitement, this is not the VRBO for you. If you value peace, privacy, and pristine nature, You will love the cabin on Alton pond.

About the host

Hosted by Chris Hudspeth

Host profile image
We love sharing the cabin and Alton Pond with people who appreciate nature and want a space to relax or having a working vacation. Chris is usually on-site from late spring (after mud season) to late fall and lives in our home (200 feet away) which also overlooks the pond. We have a young son and two cheery little dogs (Merlin and Flame).

Sashi is the best tour guide for hikes and Chris will help with directions, campfires, and s’more roasting techniques.

Why they chose this property

Alton Pond was built in 1965 and is a special place that we hope guests who stay find that being here opens something up inside of them - a creative spark, a new perspective, a renewed connection. Whether it is the constant flow of water, wind going through the trees or birds calling to each other. Every day is different and unique.

Japanese culture has a word for it: shinrin-yoku or "forest bathing"
