About Margaret Vermillion or Dan Vermillion

My husband and I bought this ranch as soon as we arrived in Montana. We love living on the Yellowstone River, and our 3 sons now operate an international fly fishing company in Livingston. We have enjoyed watching our guests take advantage of all the recreational opportunities at the Vermillion Ranch and in our region. We do not intrude in your vacation, but we are here to help you with any arrangements or questions you have. I am originally from Maine, Dale from Kansas, and we met in Boston, where Dale trained as a surgeon. Living here is a pleasure we like to share!

Margaret Vermillion or Dan Vermillion purchased this cabin in 1972

Our new screened in porch and sunny deck seat as many guests as you would like with benches, tables and chairs. Both are great places to relax, read and watch the bountiful wildlife and birds in the surrounding meadows. Some of the birds you will see are Golden and Bald Eagles, Sandhill Cranes, Blue Herons, Ospreys, Canada geese, many types of hawks, pheasants, grouse, and various colorful songbirds. Your basic needs are in the cabin to get you started--coffee, salt and pepper, flour, sugar, soap, etc. so you can settle in a bit before marketing. If you pass through Bozeman or Billings, there are very good groceries there, but also in Big Timber, our nearest town(15 minutes away) you will find a good IGA. We will be here to help you, answer questions and point you in the right direction for your requests, if you wish.

Best family vacation ever!

  • 5 of 5

This was the best family vacation we've ever taken. The cabin and ranch were beautiful, and Dr. and Mrs. Vermillion were wonderful hosts. We saw deer, antelope, fox, eagles and the Sandhill Cranes. The kids enjoyed the pond very much, and the cabin itself was a perfect blend of rustic and comfortable. We also fished/hiked the Yellowstone and Sweetgrass Creek, and we took long walks around the ranch. The peace and beauty of the surroundings gave us some much needed quality time together as a family. We will try to come again in the fall on our next vacation. Thank you so very much for allowing us to stay on your beautiful ranch.

simple cabin, restful trip

  • 5 of 5

The Lewis and Clark Cabin, located on the Vermillion's cattle ranch, was a lovely place to escape the Florida summer.

Although simple, the cabin had all we needed. The Vermillions are thoughtful, generous people and every interaction with them was positive. I especially appreciate them taking their time to look at maps with us, suggesting secret fishing and hiking spots. We hiked in Yellowstone, rode horses in Big Timber, dined and shopped in Livingston, swam at Chico Hot Springs, but our favorite days were the ones we stayed at the cabin, reading books on the porch and watching the bird feeder, while the children played in the yard.

Owner's Response: These guests were fun to have because they took advantage of every activity that our ranch has to offer and also did a nice visit to Yellowstone Park, which many of our clients include in their stays at the Lewis 'n Clark Cabin They will probably return for rodeo week this summer, and it will be a pleasure for us to see them again!

Beautiful oasis on the banks of the Yellowstone.

  • 5 of 5

We rent both houses on the Vermillion Ranch every year for our guide school. They are great places that serve as the perfect home base for exploring the fisheries of southwestern MT.

The perfect place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a wonderful stay at the Lewis and Clark cabin. It was our first time in MT and we couldn't have asked for a better place. The cabin is well appointed and comfortable with everything that you need. The property is beautiful and the fishing hole was the perfect place for my boys and I to learn how to fly fish. There's a beautiful stretch of the Yellowstone River that is easily accessible and close to the cabin. The Vermillions were very hospitable and had many good suggestions for how to access the Yellowstone Park (an incredible day trip). We booked a fishing guide for the first day that we were there through Sweetwater travel, and boy were we glad we did! Our guide Casey was patient in helping me and my sons (freeing up time for my husband, who already knew what he was doing) and he also showed us all the beautiful local spots to fish, including the nearby Bolder River which was picture perfect and so beautiful. All in all...this cabin was the perfect place to "come home to" after being out all day. Beautiful views, a comfortable screened-In porch, a new washer/dryer and the most comfortable beds. We hope to be able to come back again some day!

Owner's Response: We love to hear about the enjoyment of the ranch from our guests. This family delighted in all the space and activities of their vacation at the VR. Hiring a guide the first day was a great thing to do as the whole family enjoyed their week of flyfishing, swimming, hiking and wildlife watching from the screened in porch at the Lewis 'nClark Cabin. We will welcome them back anytime as we do all of or guests!

Perfect Family Vacation Cabin

  • 5 of 5

We had an excellent stay at the Lewis 'N Clark Cabin. It was a great family getaway with gorgeous scenery, wildlife, and plenty of outdoor fun for both our 2 year old and 11 year old daughters. We greatly enjoyed the family time and the excellent hospitality of our host and hostess. Hopefully we will be able to make our way to stay at this cabin again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for writing. June is turning into one of our best months due to global warming. The fishing over the last 2 years was excellent in June so fishermen are coming earlier to take advantage of the hungry browns and rainbows! No matter what the age, our ranch seems to work for fishermen, families, and couples from may through October!

Montana Oasis

  • 5 of 5

Although the trip was delayed due to circumstances on our end, it was a beautiful vacation and the cabin was tremendous. The description is completely accurate, and it is hard to describe in words the warmth and peaceful ambience of the accommodations and owners. The expanse of the property, wildlife and water leaves you without a need of anything else. Even the weather cooperated in October but I wouldn't hesitate to stay there at any season. A true standout from every possible angle.

Owner's Response: Fall is one of our secrets in Montana. It is a gorgeous time of year with the fall colors, and fishermen are happy to have the clear rivers to themselves, since most of the tourists have departed. Plenty of wildlife around eating and preparing for winter so great wildlife viewing also. As they say, "Try it--you will like it!". This reviewer said it all for our pleasant temperatures, sunny days of the fall and plenty of privacy. Come and catch the spawning Brown Trout in our rivers! Margaret Vermillion.

The Vermillion Ranch (800 acres) sits at the confluence of Sweetgrass Creek and the Yellowstone River. It consists of river bottom, 1 mile of Yellowstone frontage with mountain views, and meadows populated with wildlife. Excellent fly fishing in our area, and we can provide guides. We are 6 miles East of the quaint western town of Big Timber (2,500 pop.), a site for rodeos, country fairs and cutting horse events. Enjoy gourmet dining at the Grand Hotel, featured on the national historic register. For kids, a movie theater, tennis, golf course, and water slide are nearby. Explore the many hiking trails in National Forest Lands, the Crazy Mtns and the Absaroka/Beartooth Range. Swimming, rafting, and tubing on the rivers is great summer fun and uncrowded.

Other Activities: floating the river, great birding and abundant wildlife to observe at close range. Tell us your interests, and we will give you Telephone #'s to make plans!

Our ranch is definitely kid friendly with space to roam, zip line at the swimming pond , where they jump of into the water, kids' fishing pond and rivers for tubing and floating!
