Canaan Valley is a unique ecosystem. Unique flora and fauna similar to Canada and Northern part of North East. Excellent hiking, downhill skiing, X-country, mountain biking, fishing and leaf peeping. It's the highest elevation valley of its size, east of Denver. There are a great variety of birds all-year round in the Valley. The Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge is habitat to over 150 bird species, a major flyover in Spring and Fall. The night sky has little light pollution - destination spot for astronomers. Popular attractions include Blackwater Falls State Park, Canaan Valley State Park, the historic towns of Davis and Thomas featuring local artists with fine arts & crafts , the Purple Fiddle with its unique American roots-new grass -country music scene. Also nearby: Dolly Sods, Monaghahela National Forest, Cathedral State Park (old growth forest), Spruce Knob, and world-class rock climbing at Seneca Rocks.
Other Activities: canoeing, kayaking, live-music listening, snow sports in winter.
Golf: Canaan State Park, five minutes away, has a wonderful course. There is always lots of wildlife nearby, including deer near the green.
Ski: Downhill skiing only 5 minutes away at Canaan Valley Resort. Canaan Valley Resort also has fun tubing for the kiddies. White Grass, with its great cafe and friendly Chipper (you have to ask), as well as Blackwater Falls, for Nordic skiing, are about 10 minutes away.

Colleen purchased this cabin in 2005
Why Colleen chose Davis
I first discovered Canaan Valley when I went X-country skiing here as a very young adult in 1989. At the time, the only other place I had X country skied was in a thick European forest out of a Brother Grimm's fairytale. I was excited to find that Blackwater Falls State Park, when covered in snow, evoked the same feeling. I was also excited to discover that Canaan Valley has the most natural snow fall of anywhere that is a weekend trip from from the Washington DC area. I went back every winter after that and dreamed of some day having my own place there. Fast forward to 2005 when the dream became a reality. When we bought Skier's View the home was in bad condition, but we could see the potential and went about doing a thoughtful renovation and redecoration. We put lots of loving hours into the home to make it the special place it is. We are happy to share the beauty, joy and tranquility of this piece of "almost heaven" with our guests.
What makes this cabin unique
Fabulous views, central location to Valley fun. I get my best sleep in this home, thanks to the dark night skies, peace and quiet and fresh, cool mountain air. Plus, the outdoor activities probably help! In addition to the great outdoor experiences in the area, note that the towns of Davis and Thomas have a lot to offer for towns of their size, in the way of arts and food and seasonal events. (The fourth of July fireworks and parade are really special.) There are a number of artists studios, as well as the acclaimed Purple Fiddle café/music venue in Thomas. Since we bought the home this little piece of West Virginia has been growing and thriving in a very positive way -- more local shops., a local/organic grocery, (Highland Market in Davis), quaint Tip Top café in Thomas with Friday grass-fed beef burger night, and a very special "locals" bar at the Billy Motel. We are proud to be a teeny tiny part of the invigoration of this area.
