Cosy house sleeps 4 with 2 bathrooms, 2 kitchens and large terrace with pergola

Close to all the interesting tourist and shopping centres, it is within 1 minute walk from the port and its many bars, restaurants and daily fish market very famous in the entire Algarve. There are free parking spaces in the street. You can forget your car during your holidays, take a break and take your time. Only one risk: falling in love with Olhão and wanting to come back.

Faro Airport is 15 minutes away, and Seville Airport is an hour and a half away.

Olhão is around 50 km from the Spanish border which is ideal for an Andalusian getaway

Called La Medina in reference to its Moorish architecture, Olhão is in the heart of Ria Formosa Nature Park which gives it charm and authenticity. Ria Formosa, protected site, is 1 of the 5 most sought-after sites in Portugal. It preserved Olhão from the concrete and the galloping urbanisation.

The lagoon and its marina are peaceful. You can have a drink on the terrace of a bar facing the ocean.

The stunning fine sandy beaches of Armona, Culatra and Farol are reachable by ferry. There are shuttles every 30 minutes. The jetty is 200 m from the lagoon.

It is also the starting point for guided visits by boat or on foot on the Ria Formosa to discover the fauna and flora and the wide diversity of birds.

With 120 m², this fisherman’s house that has been fully renovated with all modern conveniences can comfortably accommodate 4 people. It is not suitable for children under 10. Pets are not allowed.

The furniture and the decoration are contemporary with important European design brands.

Included in the rate: water, electricity, cleaning, bed linen, bath linen and beach towels. The cleaning is also done during the week and linen is changed for 2 or 3 weeks stays (once a week).

For the long stays of more than 3 weeks, with promotional rate, the household is made every 2 weeks.

About Pierre and Brigitte Deviers

We are French and native from the Lot in Midi-Pyrénées. We renovated houses for a French, British, American and Canadian clientele in the departments of the Lot and the Dordogne.

On a trip in Algarve, we fell in love with Olhão, we were seduced immediately, and we felt serenity. On a walk, we fell for this house; so much so that we decided to buy immediately because it seemed obvious to us. For once, we had nothing to organise, we only had to put down our bags.

We love walking in the labyrinth of these narrow streets with our eyes raised to the deep blue sky. Every time we come back, the charm works again. There is an old-fashioned atmosphere, suspended in time, a sweet peacefulness surrounds us. By arriving on the port, Olhão is busy and attractive. The morning market is very lively, there are nice Southern perfumes.

Olhão is called “cubic town” or Medina because of its Moorish architecture which is unique and authentic in the entire Algarve. We paid particular attention to the architecture of the places we visit.

In Olhão, we do everything on foot or by bike. The car remains parked in the street. We look for simple pleasures such as going to the market and enjoy a coffee on a terrace facing the lagoon, making a detour on our way home and lose ourselves in the streets of the historic centre which is mainly pedestrian, going by bike to Fuseta (10 km) for breakfast while following the Ecovia that runs along the lagoon. Everything is quiet and delightful.

It is never very cold. The weather is good in any season. In February, temperatures even reach 25° under the sun which is ideal for a breakfast on a terrace of the port in one of the many restaurants with very affordable prices.

It rarely rains. There are very few scattered showers.

In short, it is pleasant to live here.

Over time, when we stop working, we plan to stay here more often and longer.

The climate is very pleasant and very sunny. This town is lively. Portuguese people are very welcoming and warm, always with a ready smile. It is a new life project that we want to share.

Portugal is a beautiful country.

What makes this house unique

This house is ideally located within 1 minute walk from the port and its fish market that takes place every morning. Olhão is one of the most important fishing harbours of Portugal. Buy your fish at the morning market and grill it on the plancha on the terrace. It is the place of the house where we spend most of our time and it is very pleasant and bathed in sunlight at any time of the day.

In the morning at breakfast, it is caressed by the first sunrays.

During the cocktail hour, enjoy a very fresh glass of white wine, grilled almonds, and pure happiness.

At lunch, repose in the shade of the pergolas.

At dinner, relax in the cooling sea breeze.

Restaurants and bars are a few steps away. The food is good everywhere with fish and traditional Portuguese meals such as the Cataplana that is a sort of Portuguese paella or the Fejouada that is a sort of kidney bean stew with meat or fish.

From Olhão, you can easily visit the entire Algarve, the seafront but also the hinterland.

From the lagoon, take the taxi boat 2 minutes away to reach the islands of Culatra, Farol and Armona where you will find stunning beaches.

There are bus departures from the lagoon to reach the water parks of the region.

In the hinterland, visit Loulé with its Moorish market and its medieval castle. Go to Monchique where you will find a delicious honey with subtle eucalyptus flavour. Continue to Foia which offers views over the entire Algarve 902 m in altitude. Go to Silves and visit its impressive medieval castle. You will also enjoy the local specialty which is the “piri piri” chicken grilled on a giant barbecue in a restaurant below the castle. Silves is the starting point of the Cork Route that will lead you to the cork capital, São Bras de Alportel, thought wonderful landscapes. The outlet shop “Percor” in the town centre offers top of the range colourful cork items including designer leather goods. You can visit the factory by appointment.

Perfect Little Gem in Old Olhao

Within the city of Olhao is the old original fishing village. This perfect little house is situated in the old village on a narrow cobblestone street. Your neighbors live here. Everything you need, restaurants, the market, the grocery store, the bakeries are all within easy walking distance. Street parking is difficult but we found lots of free parking lots nearby. Completely safe.

The house itself is newly renovated and very clean. The kitchen was extremely well equipped for cooking in. On the second floor was a large bedroom and bathroom. All modern and comfortable. On the third floor is a small sitting room with TV and the terrace. This is where you spend your days, weather permitting. There is a retractable awning for sun screening. There is an outdoor kitchen and plancha for cooking. Plus a washing machine for laundry. You hang your clothes to dry just like the neighbors.

Air conditioning is available on all floors.

Two bikes are available for cycling in the town or to nearby towns.

Brigitte, the French owner, was very cordial and helpful. She is fluent in English.

We would definitely return.

Beautiful Olhao

Husband and I stayed for five weeks, Olhao as always never disappoints, although it is an acquired taste, a working town welcomes tourists which suits us.

Moradia is situated a stones down a narrow street which is extremely busy from early morning until late at night this means there is always traffic noise. Parking is difficult around the house, pot luck if you can get a space and popular with local residents etc. so if you require parking close by be aware. We didn't find this a particular problem only when unloading etc.

The area around the house is mainly residential and as such is busy with local residents and their dogs!!!!! These were a problem, they bark when the church bells ring which obviously is a regular occurrence, at passers-by and at anytime day or night or in the middle of the night, it did become a nuisance.

The house seems to be of single wall construction so any noise is easily heard inside.

On the plus side this is an extremely well equipped holiday let, I don't think we have ever rented one with so much kitchen equipment! It is nicely decorated and the bed is comfortable. The sofa bed in the top floor lounge is not very comfy as a settee and as a bed is very tight to the ajoining walls but then it is really only for two people and if you are on holiday you will probably rarely be sat inside.

The roof terrace is amazing and again well equipped. Plenty of sun all day until the early evening and with lovely views of the old town but again the dogs are a problem here too.

Neighbours in the area are delightful and always try to communicate which is very nice.

Didn't use the downstairs bathroom only the shower room which was fine, although we would have liked to know about the water being heated by solar power before booking. In the instruction manual left in the house it states that on dull days it can be a problem, luckily we only had two of these but yes it was a problem on these as there was barely enough hot water for one! So if you like to shower everyday as we do be aware of this.

There also seems to be a problem in the master bedroom with some mould and damp appearing on the front wall. I note this has been mentioned in a previous review. It was not present when we arrived but did reappear before the end of our holiday. We would not return but everything stated is based on personal taste. We had a wonderful holiday despite some of the negatives.

Owner's Response: Sometimes on winter the sun is not strong enough to warm the water, there is a swich to put the solar panel on electric energy when it is necessary. The phone number of the man who look after the solar panel is on the book's house, in case of emergency. Dogs are very popular in Portugal, portuguese love them. This house is lovely, situated in the historic center. With 120m², two bathrooms, it is well equipped for 4 peoples on holiday. The street is narrow and in one-way, trafic is not intence, except on saturday morning. The famous fish market of Olhão is near the street, lots of Portuguese tries to park their car. Everything you need is close: restaurants, shops, museum, sea front, market, parking. Not necessary to have a car, there are two bikes free.

Juste parfait !

Idéalement placée, à quelques pas du front de mer d'un côté, du centre historique de l'autre, cette maison à la fois "locale", de par son architecture, et moderne de par ses prestations et équipements , est un véritable atout charme pour passer de paisibles et agréables vacances et découvrir les environs !

Nous apprécions particulièrement la cuisine d'extérieur, suffisamment équipée (frigo-plancha-plaques de cuisson- évier) qui permet de profiter encore plus de la terrasse sur le toit, de se faire des ptits apéros sympas sans avoir à courir jusqu'en cuisine ! Celle ci d'ailleurs est très belle, rien n'y manque, mais nous n'avons même pas eu besoin de l'utiliser ! Il faut dire que les environs immédiats offrent un tel choix de restaurants que nous n'avons pas songé une seule fois à faire de la cuisine !

Nous avons passé de merveilleuses vacances, et cette très belle maison à très largement contribué à faire notre bonheur !

Nous reviendrons, assurément !

Maison idéalement placée près du port, du marché, à quelques pas des rues piétonnes.

Intérieur contemporain très agréable et très confortable. Rien ne manque.

Elle a contribué à la réussite de nos vacances dans une région qui méritent le détour, et même d'y revenir.
