Down to earth and comfortable!

  • 5 of 5

This is a comfortable, simple dwelling with all you need. Our family enjoyed our time in the woods and by the brook. We woke to the sounds of birds chirping and the babbling creek just down the bank. It was so relaxing to wake up immersed in nature! We fell in love with the village of Putney, where folks are friendly and committed to being a community, and the arts are abundant! We enjoyed beer and books in Brattleboro, and hiking the trials to the pond at Madame Sherri's in Chesterfield - just across the river.

To experience having to dispose of one's own garbage provides a useful reminder to be a steward of the environment! If you want to experience Vermont, and this is from a 7th generation Vermonter from the other side of the state - this place provides an authentic experience!

Well equipped and situated but needs so.e work.

  • 3 of 5

The house was generally well equiped and well situated. A number of areas need improvement. 1. Floors, carpets and general surfaces could have been better cleaned. 2. Requiring guests to remove garbage is an inconvenience (left at 4am on a Sunday - not sure what to do w garbage). 3 Main east facing bedroom needs shades. 4. There was a major ant outbreak on the kitchen counter. 5. Wifi code needs to be clarified (lower case). 6. Could not drive to house due to snow bank.

Owner's Response: I appreciate the feedback but as I indicate in my house rules and communications, I invite questions over the house during or prior to the arrival date and am disappointed that did not happen in this case, which might have helped avoid some of the concerns this renter raised. For example, I provide clear instructions on the trash removal a month prior to the guest arriving, and offer to discuss various trash options before or during the rental. The kitchen and wood floors and all kitchen, bath and furniture surfaces were all cleaned - by hand - and all rugs vacuumed prior to the guest arrival. I apologize for ants, but I had no knowledge of this as of a day before the arrival date when the house was set up and the renter did not contact me about this problem during their stay, making it difficult to correct it until after their departure. Regarding snow removal - the upper driveway is well plowed, but the plow truck will not plow all the way to the front door - there is a cleared path to the house from the plowed driveway and parking area. This is Vermont after all and in over 11 years of renting on Homeaway no renter has ever complained before. This particular renter did not follow some basic house rules and by not communicating, did not afford me the possibility of assisting them during their stay.

Cozy and quiet with everything you need.

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here with our two dogs for Thanksgiving weekend. We were looking for a place away from holiday crowds with easy access to nature and hiking. This place was ideal! You can hike right out the back door to some well-maintained X-country ski trails (3-10K loops). We paid the extra fee to use the hot tub. Between that and the fireplace, we were cozy and peaceful the whole time. The kitchen is fully equipped. We had no problems making our holiday meal. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a quiet getaway.

Pleasant stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed three nights in this delightful house. It was very comfortable and was exactly what we were looking for while visiting friends in Putney. The owner, Dan, was easy to work with. We enjoyed our stay.

Cozy, Restful, Clean

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is located in a peaceful location with a perfect babbling brook. It was a great setting for some much needed RnR. We loved the wood burning stove, the books, games, and old movies that come with the house. The layout of the house allows for tons of natural light. We also were able to use the hot tub in the basement for an extra was definitely worth it! Highly recommend this place for those who need to unplug (no internet, no cell reception, and no digital TV) and unwind. We'll definitely be back! Thanks Dan!

Owner's Response: Very glad you had a great stay! Just to note that internet and cell coverage is possible but can be spotty. Free 24/7 high speed internet is available nearby. A hill behind the house tends to reduce cell coverage but it seems to vary by provider. DSL and cable services are not available but high speed fiber optic is scheduled for this part of West Hill Road in the fall 2015.

Great House to Explore Vermont from and come "home" to

  • 5 of 5

We used this house as a platform to explore Artsy Putney, and close by Brattleboro. It was Fantastic. The owner was great, and was great communicating with us. This house is a very nice and easy getaway. Fall was at its prime, and the house floor to ceiling windows allowed for a fantastic view of the fall foliage. Great House, cozy and relaxing to come back to after a long day of adventure. Close to everything, but secluded enough to feel like you're really able to get away. Kitchen is loaded with all necessary pots pans dishes for cooking and coffee maker for mornings, so just bring food or buy groceries at the local putney market and relax with a romantic meal and wine. (Putney general store sells beer/wine also). We had a lot of fun, absolutely recommend this house to any couple looking for a romantic getaway. Plenty of room, great deck and the wood stove is a nice feature. Only complaint was the 2 upstairs bedroom mattresses were very hard.

Owner's Response: I appreciate the very nice review and aim to provide a comfortable, quiet, high quality stay in a wonderful part of Vermont. With respect to the comment about the beds, the feedback I have had is that the beds and the house are very comfortable. To some degree, this is a matter of individual taste however I am replacing the futon bed in the second bedroom with a new mattress that should be softer than the existing futon. Thanks again for the positive feedback.
