Excellent, Exactly as Advertised
I spent the better part of November and Don and Bev's property in Lincolnville. It was all I had hoped for and more.
Even though I arrived late, Don was there to greet me with information about the house and a huge jug of his homemade apple cider. Don was very friendly and down-to-earth. He is also very responsive to emails and helped me with several details before I arrived.
The barn is warm and snug with ample options for lighting and plenty of work spaces. I used his wifi daily and found his connection fast and reliable. I had no problems logging into my office machine in Georgia and did not experience any outages.
One thing I liked about the barn was the huge great room downstairs, which had many possibilities for work areas. I was able to keep a half dozen projects open and going without ever having to close a journal, book, or laptop.
The place is absolutely perfect for quiet contemplation. The views were very good -- I particularly enjoyed watching the 30 or so geese comically eating the apples that fell constantly from Don and Bev's tree -- and the area is very quiet.
However, there are plenty of opportunities for sightseeing and distraction. Lincolnville is between Camden and Belfast, both typical Maine coastal tourist towns, and Rockland, with all its amenities is only a little further up. I took a lot of fantastic drives. If you haven't seen Maine before, this is a good place for your pied-a-terre; Bangor and Ellsworth are not too far away, and Portland is an easy drive. Of course, the Maine coast is magical, and I found the ambience there so attractive that I scarcely ventured beyond the little towns I've mentioned.
One reviewer pointed out that the kitchen in the cabin is not particularly well equipped, but I disagree. It's true you wont find high end gear -- one never does in a rental, as it has a way of walking off the property with former tenants. And as an ardent amateur chef, I sympathize. But I found all that I needed. Also I was especially impressed by the range, which is a high end gas 4-burner and grill setup, and is absolutely first rate. It was a pleasure to use it.
I also enjoyed the wood burning stove. Don kept me well stocked up on cordwood, and the stove is efficient and attractive.
The bed was comfortable, though a little high for a short fellow like me. Nevertheless I slept soundly.
Top marks for Don and Bev's Windjammer Cabin. It served me well and I recommend it.
My husband and our two dogs stayed five nights at the barn. We were awe struck by it's rustic yet refined decor inside and out. It is even more beautiful than the online photos. The barn had plenty of lounging space, comfy furniture and comfy master bed. The kitchen was great and well stocked--anyone who likes to cook on vacay will be very happy. The views were impressive and relaxing. The location was FANTASTIC! Practically right around the corner from Lincolnville Beach and some great little restaurants/pubs, four miles or so to bustling downtown Camden and 10 miles to Belfast. You are never at a loss for something to do! :) Don was so very nice--he responded promptly with any needs or questions we had. We thank he and Bev for a lovely vacay.
A great location for outdoors types
The barn is unique and comfortable. Don and Bev provide everything you could possibly need and are wonderful hosts. We have come up twice now to spend the month hiking, kayaking, and cycling. The ferry to beautiful Ilesboro is practically next door, plenty of places nearby to paddle including a put-in by the ferry in Lincolnville harbor as well as lakes and ponds. We take advantage of all of it as well as the restaurants from Belfast to Rockport. If you are a couch potato you can do that too while gazing at the beautiful view or just sitting in the sun reading. My only disappointment is that I still have not seen a moose!.
Lovely week in Maine
We enjoyed a great week at the barn! We loved lounging in the spacious great room with views of the meadows and pond. The house is comfy and nicely decorated without being uncomfortably precious, and the kitchen was well stocked with all the cooking necessities. Don and Bev were warm and gracious hosts and the location is very conveniently located to Camden, Mt. Battie, and the ferries to the Penobscot islands.
Camden has tons of great shops and restaurants, in addition to the ones right in Lincolnville -- including the fabulous Dot's, where we indulged in homemade buttermilk biscuits and a nice assortment of breakfast and lunch options. We loved swimming and paddling in Lake Megunticook, which has a perfect beach for families and two separate boat launch areas. We also took a drive to Acadia (about 90 minutes north), which was wonderful.
Thank you for sharing all the beauties of mid-coast Maine with us! We loved it!
Isabel and family were great guests and took advantage of all the things the area has to offer. We hope they will find the time to return again!
An awesome place to stay
Stay here and you'll very happy.
Convenient to lots of activities in the Camden area, but quiet enough that you can have your own time. We also made the drive to Acadia...about 90 minutes and as ready drive. A grill and table for your user on the lawn. Beautiful property. Lots of room and comfortable. Don is very helpful too. Highly recommended.
Rustic and quiet. Perfect for some one who doesn't need much to enjoy life.
We were welcomed like family. The house had everything we my husband, daughter, and two dogs needed for an extended stay. Our hosts were wonderful even included us on christmas eve with there family. The only issue we had was the internet was a little slow and the cable went out and never came back on.
A short walk away are four restaurants, the Lincolnville Beach, and shops with local Maine crafts. If you prefer to drive, the towns of Camden, Rockport, Rockland and Belfast are all within 20 minutes. State Parks, hiking trails, chances to take a whale watch or a Puffin tour or simply to sit and view the harbors of what many consider the most beautiful portion of Maine’s coast are all available to you. Art galleries dot the road from Camden to Belfast.
Maine's Mid-Coast is the kind of genuine Maine experience you've always imagined. It includes a wealth of picturesque harbors, rugged peninsulas and majestic lighthouses of breathtaking scenic beauty.
