About Joel Bernard
We have lived all over the country, and we find ourselves coming back to Old Town, Alexandria time and again. We were tired of staying in hotels when we visited and decided to buy a place of our own and share it with others.
Joel Bernard purchased this Townhouse in 2018
Why Joel Bernard chose Southwest Quadrant
We bought this home because of its layout and its location. Its a comfortable home with plenty of room for a comfortable stay. Its location is idea for those interested in exploring Alexandria, DC or National Harbor. You can walk to the metro, restaurants, shops and the river; you can grab a Capital Bikeshare and explore the GW Parkway. This home is central to it all.
What makes this Townhouse unique
You will love Old Town, Alexandria. The city was founded in 1749 and is home to many historical sites including Christ Church where both George Washington and Robert E Lee worshiped, Gatsby's Tavern, the Lee-Fendall Home and The Torpedo Factory. Old Town is set up as a grid, with most homes being multi-story townhomes with shared walls, charming gardens and for some, water views of the Potomac River. Old Town is home to wonderful restaurants, shops, boutiques and parks. The town is very dog-friendly. Learn more at

Very clean and cute and well appointed townhouse walking distance from King street and all it has to offer in Old Town. We wish it had a half bath downstairs with three ladies trying to get ready at once, but we knew it when we rented it that it only had one. Maybe if Joel could hang another mirror in the bed with the twin beds that would help at least for putting on makeup etc; Joel was a very responsive and thoughtful host.
Great spot for DC and Old Town exploring
Everything went smoothly. Parking was easy, Uber rides to DC were easy to get and cost between $30-35 roundtrip. Didn’t spend tons of time in the home, but it was very comfortable for our family o; four. The AC felt great after coming home from a long day in the DC heat. Beds were comfortable. Place was quiet. Would stay again.
Great location, great house!
I stayed at the Dog House for 3 nights, to bring my son to a summer educational program in DC. It was the perfect location for us, and the house itself was smartly designed and very welcoming. Joel was very responsive if I had a question, and he provided a lot of nice touches, especially a fully equipped modern kitchen that even had some food items already available.
Within just a block or two, you have a very nice market, bike share, good Mexican and Italian restaurants, and an Ethiopian coffee shop that also sells high quality wine and beer.
Moving further out, the river and the Alexandria historic district, with the square, shopping, and restaurants, are only half a mile to a mile away. A walk down King Street from the square to the water, and a visit to Jones Point, are well worth the time.
Finally, you’re only about 6 miles from downtown DC itself. We drove, but metro buses and Uber will do fine. Be sure to investigate the availability and routes of public transportation in advance.
The house makes great use of the space. Downstairs, you first have the living room and TV over the fireplace, then the kitchen, then the dining area, then the back patio. Upstairs there is a walkway between the two bedrooms, the two twin beds at the front of the house, and the queen at the back. In between are the stackable laundry (nice modern front loaders) opposite the bathroom. All the amenities are modern and new, and everything is clean and high quality.
Sorry to go on, but I like to tell people what I would have wanted to know going in. We’re also coming back to stay after my son’s program as a family of four, and I know we picked the right place!
Dog House was great
Loved the location of the Dog House, it was perfect for visiting Washington DC.
Great host! Great location! Beautiful home 😎
We absolutely loved the home and the location to everything. It is a great home to bring your pup and wonderful area for dogs. Walking distance to great restaurants. City rental bikes steps away and a short ride to beautiful bike path. Joel was a great host. We felt welcome in his home. Beds and home cozy and comfortable. My husband, pup and I went for a weekend get away and to explore a new town, which was lovely. Parking was also very easy. Will stay again and was sad to leave! Thank you for a great weekend!
The Dog House is funky, clean and big (for a row home). My husband, daughter and grandbaby stayed 3 nights. We had a delightful time while visiting Old Town and DC. The home is so comfortable, I felt like I was staying at a relative’s house. The dog bed, bowls and dog toy were nice touches. We thought we’d have our dogs but didnt. The kitchen is fully stocked w/all kinds of extras. A grocery store is 1 block away. Easy, street parking with no time restriction. The queen bed is the most comfortable bed Ive ever slept in. Brand new appliances. Large washer/dryer. I cant say enough about this place. And Joel is VERY responsive. Thank you again Joel for sharing your place!
