Kingsley Mill Manor was the mill owner's house built in the mid 1800's. Total privacy is yours while vacationing in a Vermont wonderland, in all seasons. Just beyond the backyard, flows a river through our new private swimming area. The waterfall there can be viewed from the back deck and the newly created master bedroom suite. Music from the falls bathes the house, soothing the souls of all who experience it. In the backyard is an outdoor fire pit with wood to toast your marshmallows and warm your hearts.
Hiking, biking, cross country skiing, and snowmobile trails start at the back door and connect to the VAST statewide trail system. Lake Dunmore is less than 2 miles away, a five minute drive or less than an hour hike via the trails. Middlebury College is 10 minutes from the house.
Watch the sun rise over the mountain. Enjoy bonfires in the back yard fire pit. A wrap around porch with a hanging loveseat defines easy living, and our new four seaon screened porch offers privacy, river music, and a fireplace. The four season sun porch offers space for everyone to gather as does the farm table in the dining room.
There is plenty of lawn for large or small tents, plenty of parking and a large propane grill for outdoor eating. There is a large octagon picnic table in the backyard to feast upon. .
We understand the need for your pet to be included in your vacation. It is our pleasure to accept dogs and only ask that you curb them from getting on the furniture, crate them if you are going to leave them in the house alone, and please clean up after them.
Historical Experience: Our lovely vacation home provides a homey and spacious surrounding for a family gathering, reunions, weddings, or simply to get away from it all in pure Vermont privacy. Built over 175 years ago, you can witness the only standing mill in Salisbury. Please enjoy the multiple trails to other sites along the natural waterways. One of our trails now includes a footbridge over the falls to a private island for your fun and adventure.
Sandy beach, private swimming, suits optional.: With no visible neighbors bask in the sun on the banks of our sandy beach. This private swimming area is four feet deep, shallow enough for children, deep enough for real swimming. Adult supervision required for children. Jump into the water from the dam, sit under the waterfall or in our natural whirlpool and let your worries be washed away. There is a picnic table for a real beach experience. A paradise for all ages.
Our rebuilt, enlarged four season screened back porch overlooks the swimming area and the waterfall. We just installed an efficient and automatic fireplace/stove in the porch. Watch the snow fall in cozy, warm comfort. Great place for breakfast, barbecue, and sleeping.
Snowmobile and cross country ski heaven: Middlebury Snow Bowl is very close for downhill skiing, Killington less than an hour away. Literally from our back door you can cross country ski on challenging trails with no trail fees For snowmobilers it is heaven. Access to the VAST trail is direct from the backyard. There is a pond for Ice fishermen as well as a private trail to Lake Dunmore. Ice skating in the wild or at the rink just ten minutes away. Snow shoeing on our ski trails will take you through the woods and open land. From here you can roam the entire state of Vermont on the VAST trail system.
Jalna and David met later in life in 2003. We were married in 2008. Our choice was to live up north at David's place and turn the house where Jalna raised her family into Kingsley Mill Manor. It's our favorite place to vacation.
Our passion is to continue working on the Manor to make it ever more comfortable as a vacation rental. Recently we turned an attic into a beautiful master bedroom suite with 2 person Jacuzzi and a view from room of waterfall and mountains. Our current goal is to restore the last standing Kingsley mill, which is on the property and go green with water power from the river.
Jalna Southwick or David Southwick purchased this house in 1986
Kingsley Mill Manor has location, location, location. It's very private with no visible neighbors, yet a quarter mile from the village. A river runs through the property with two gorgeous swimming areas and a waterfall. Behind Kingsley the land is owned by the Middlebury Land Trust so will remain undeveloped. A trail runs from our back door to Lake Dunmore. This trail is part of the VAST system of snowmobile/cross country skiing trails that spans Vermont. It's also a gorgeous hike.
The house is large, comfortable, with a long history. It is the perfect setup for a vacation rental, for family reunions, for ski teams, organizational meetings, weddings and just plain fun.
One of the features of the property that I fell in love with was the foot bridge over the pond and above the falls. Walk across for multiple trails to old mill foundations and cross country ski trails in the winter
Our daughter Criss chose to wed in Middlebury Vermont in January of this year. She and her intended Joel wished to make it a winter celebration for our families and in Middlebury so that the elder members of his Vermont family would not have to travel. So that our cozy family and very dear friends from Pennsylvania could spend time together in preparation for the blessed event, we engaged Jalna and David's beautiful Kingsley Mill Manor. The colorful photographs and detailed description on the website hardly did the Manor justice! It far exceeded our expectations in roominess, comfort, cleanliness, availability of activities and provisions, and especially beauty. From the generous welcome basket on the counter as we arrived to the huge Christmas tree especially decorated in Criss' wedding colors (yes, Jalna was sweet enough to ask what they were!) everything was wonderful. There was lots of room for everyone, the house was warm and comfortable everywhere (which says a great deal for the furnace because it was frigid that week) and there were plenty of supplies. Towels, sheets and sundry supplies were there making our stay so much easier. Located on a well maintained, wooded country lane, the house is charmingly decorated and has comfortable furniture. The owners were available if needed, but all of our needs were truly anticipated. There were even books and games in case of boredom, which there wasn't. The surrounding woods and steams were a nature lovers paradise. Even in the icy cold, the rushing mill stream behind the house could be heard adding to the charm. One family member has limited mobility, so the first floor bedroom and sitting room was especially helpful and entry into the home was also easy. For our guests there were nearby restaurants, the terrific shopping at Middlebury and many other locations, and a few even braved nearby ski slopes. The local folks were friendly and maps and directions readily available everywhere. Our time there was like coming home, with the warm familiarity of family. We are hoping to be fortunate enough to arrange another visit soon to perhaps enjoy a different Vermont season and to see what other treasures we find at Kingsley Manor Mill .
We stayed here 8 adults 11 children including 4 babies. It was charmingly redone 1800's mill house.
The waterfall out back made it feel like the edge of the world. The house was big and spacious and had everything you could wish for. Toys, games, and I would love to meet the person who selected the books... A great variety and many classics I love.
The TV was a really big screen which was great for watching family movies.
Our kids went sledding on the hill behind the house.
The rooms are comfortable and well set up.
Overall highly recommend.
We stayed for one week at Kingsley Mill Manor, combining attending a family wedding, making it in to a family reunion, and the house worked brilliantly for our needs. 14 adults stayed at the house and it did not feel in the least bit crowded. 5 bedrooms upstairs, 2 downstairs, meant that we could all spread out. There are 4 living room/gathering spots so folks were able to gather together or find a quiet spot to visit or read. The enormous kitchen table allowed for large family meal gatherings. The grounds and area offer many interesting hikes, simple walks, croquet tournaments, or simply sitting by the waterfall, dangling your feet in the water, feeding the fish.
We stayed with our adult disabled son, who has difficulty walking and needs adult assistance. The Kingsley Mill Manor home and grounds was easy to navigate with him. The ground level bathroom is large and easily able to accommodate our son and additional adult helper. We were able to take him for walks on the fairly quiet road, in to a cute town (a short two block walk), to Lake Dunsmore state park, around the ample grounds of the home or we simply sat in the chairs by the waterfall, or sat him on the mini-bridge over the stream, enabling him to dangle his feet and hands in the water. A brilliant home for everyone's needs.
The kitchen was very well equipped. It had everything we needed to cook great meals. The grill was wonderful. The house was spacious and there was room for everyone to spread out and do different things. We enjoyed the fire pit and being right on the VAST trail system.
Everything we needed was provided. Sheets, towels, paper towels, toilet tissue, cleaning supplies, basic spices and kitchen condiments.
The swimming hole was very shallow and not the way it looked in the pictures.
The proximity to Middlebury was wonderful and we had several nice excursions into town.
We would stay again if the family chose VT as our destination.
The house worked great for 8 adults and 8 kids. The house was sectioned off nicely but still had rooms big enough to fit us all. The best part was the property. The kids had a blast catching minnows. The owner was very friendly, helpful and responsive.
The house was lovely for a group of 13 with many little children who could run around inside and outside. The place was very clean and well maintained as well as fully equipped for everything we needed around the house, kitchen and yard. Would recommend it to anyone who's looking to have a nice family gathering for a weekend or more. Lake Dunmore is close by for a swim and there are several nice hikes in the area.
We would recommend to stay in this property and enjoy Jelna's and David's hospitality.
