Map

Castellar de Santiago is a small village in the province of Ciudad Real, nestled in the hillsides of Sierra Morena. Founded in 1545, the village was once known for its exportation of ceramics. Though Cervantes doesn’t mention villages in Campo de Montiel (Ciudad Real) by name, we can imagine Don Quixote gallivanting through the Castellar de Santiago on one of his many adventures.

The village boasts a stunning mason church, the Parish Church of Santa Ana, which dominates the scenery with its thick buttresses and simple belfry. The major draw to the region, however, is its spectacular landscape. The area is full of olive trees, vineyards, and ample opportunities for hiking along the ravines and hills. Visitors will want to climb La sierra del Cambron, which at 1068 meters is the highest place in the surrounding area and gives spectacular views of the villages below. The Chico Mendes fauna refuge is a protected natural area in the Sierra de Castellar, which provides a safe haven for endangered species such as the Iberian lynx – a must-see!
