Once in a lifetime opportunity

  • 5 of 5

It was such a treat to celebrate our 25th anniversary with a visit to Abcoude and Maarten's wonderful windmill. We travelled a lot through the region by car, so staying just outside of Amsterdam made it a lot easier to get out and on the road. The unit is a short bike ride to the center of town and the train station, and wonderfully situated with canals and biking activity on one side, and expansive farm land and a view of the town center on the other. Everything inside is just fascinating, and Maarten was a wonderful host. We remained in contact during our stay, and he helped us with a lot of questions about the area. The rental description is accurate and is not a good option for the mobility challenged or where small children might go unsupervised. All furnishings are very comfortable, and the unit is stocked with everything you would need to be comfortable during your stay. Our only regret was that we travelled to all the wonderful and quaint towns around the region and didn't spend more time relaxing at the windmill.

Visiting the Fatherland

  • 5 of 5

My sister, husband and I stayed in the windmill as a part of our Dutch heritage trip to the Netherlands. We took an Uber to the windmill and all of us were in awe when we arrived, even the Uber driver! Maarten was fantastic in his communication and we enjoyed meeting him. Staying in the windmill is truly a once in a lifetime experience. We loved hearing the cows entering the back pasture and the bees humming in the garden. We rode the provided bikes into Abcoude and had the best time eating in the city. Abcoude is a delightful town with a wonderful grocery and enjoyable options for dining. We appreciated the use of the bikes, especially getting to the train station. If you're planning to take the train into the city, there is a ticket machine at the train station. Caution, the machine would not take our U.S. credit cards, even with the chip. We had to ride back into town to get enough coins for the machine. Just be prepared! The ride to the train station is beautiful and it is quite easy to get into Amsterdam On our last morning we were delighted and honored to help hoist the sails on the windmill. Thank you Maarten for providing us with ample information, helping us settle in, and making the start to our Dutch Dream Trip truly fabulous!

Extraordinary accommodations made for a memorable stay

  • 5 of 5

We feel extremely fortunate to have been able to stay at Maarten's windmill. We decided to keep it a secret to surprise the kids and my father in law who were traveling with us. To say it was a big hit would be an understatement. The setting was perfect. The house was extremely comfortable and well furnished. I thought the bed linens were especially nice. The sitting room, dining area, water closet, and kitchen are on the entry floor. One level up are two bedrooms, another water closet and a bathroom with double sinks. On the top level is a gigantic master bedroom with windows on each side. This bedroom covers the entire top level. The entire house is furnished nicely with antiques and modern conveniences. We could not have been happier. Great WIFI and satellite television. We enjoyed breakfast at the house and were out site seeing the rest of the day. We had a super lunch at nearby Anna Haen the day of arrival and would heartily recommend it. Around the windmill we enjoyed watching the sheep in a nearby meadow, two swans which were always nearby and we even spotted a ring necked pheasant! During our stay we visited Keukenhof, Amsterdam, Zaanse Schans, and Edam which are all convenient to the house. Another bonus is that house is less than 30 minutes to the airport so we avoided an airport hotel the last night of our trip which was really refreshing. I would definitely return again. Thank you Maarten for offering such a special place for us to stay while visiting your wonderful country.

Amazing and convenient stay near Amsterdam

  • 5 of 5

First of all, unless you have problems with mobility, just book this place. It is awesome. We have traveled all over Europe and this was a top three experience.

Maarten deserves 7 out of 5 stars. My son and I were completely fascinated by the inner workings of the windmill and Maarten spent at least an hour opening up the inside working parts to the mill and showing us, telling us all about it. He was happy to give us advice on how to get into Amsterdam and nearby places to eat, etc. He met us at the door with a 4 pack of beer, the best host I've ever had. I really admire what he has done restoring this property and letting others like me experience it.

Regarding the windmill. It is not necessarily the cheapest option available but it is certainly competitive in price with other properties that I viewed in Amsterdam. In my view, the experience is absolutely worth every penny. My only caution is that this home is not for those with mobility issues, handicapped persons and I would think twice about having very little kids there as the stairs are very steep and irregular (which was part of the enchantment for us). The owners have refurnished the interior with wonderful results. It is a mix of rustic and modern elegance which is hard to describe but beautiful to see. In my view the pictures online don't do this place justice. Modern conveniences are available (WIFI, TV) but in such a beautiful setting we didn't use very much. It has a small fridge, convection oven with microwave. Kitchen had some basics (oils, spices, etc.. ) The beds and linens were all comfortable and had bednets which my kids thought were canopies for royalty.

The location is about 5 minutes from a quaint town (Abcoude) which had some restaurants and a grocery store. We got to downtown Amsterdam by parking at the train station there (for free) and buying round trip tickets (30 euro for 2 adults, three kids). Train came about twice an hour and took about 20 minutes to get to downtown train station where everything we visited was within walking distance.

I hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did.

Beautiful, relaxing, and unique place to stay

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here with my family of five for three nights. It is a lovely place in a beautiful setting. The location is convenient to Amsterdam and Utrecht (5 minute cycle/15 minute walk to the train station). Maarten was very helpful and attentive. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a unique lodging experience in the countryside near Amsterdam.

Most guests enjoy visiting Amsterdam during the day and relaxing around the mill after. Watch the river, the land and embrace the simple beauty of country life. To stay in an authentique and operational mill is simply unique.

Mondrian's painting of this mill is in the National Museum!
