Relaxing stay in wonderful, unique place and beautiful surroundings

  • 5 of 5

Four of us stayed at the windmill for a week in April. We didn't know exactly what to expect. A spectacular bonus greeted us on arrival: Maarten and a friend had the windmill going full tilt when we arrived. It's a fascinating, spectacular sight, outside and inside (where you see a huge milled timber rotating in the center of the upstairs bedroom, and more of the workings on view behind a cabinet door in the living room). But even without that display, the experience of staying here was totally wonderful. The windows from the living room and kitchen gave a nice view out to the lovely surrounding fields and sky with a quality of light that seems distinct to this landscape. We would see a few sheep appear each morning and retreat each evening. The kitchen was fully equipped and artfully designed in a small galley-like space. (From the kitchen window we could watch the shaggy sheep and their lambs move through the field like enormous brown caterpillars.) Up a steep stairway was a landing and two nice bedrooms, and up a steeper stairway was the third and largest bedroom that took up the entire third floor of the hexagon. It's rustic, but very comfortable, well-designed and beautiful. It was good to have bikes available to ride along the adjacent river and nearby canal. The town of Abcoude is just a 10 minute bike ride or a 20 minute walk. The train ride from Abcoude to Amsterdam is short and easy. We rented a car from Maarten and drove to Utrecht, Keukenhof, and Otterlo - each an easy drive from the mill. There are a couple of nice lunch spots in easy walking distance, one of which (at the old train station-turned-hotel) offers early dinner. It was great to walk or bike along the river and watch and hear birds, ducks, herons, storks (roosting on a platform in the next field), sheep and cows, and the lone billygoat guarding a neighbor's patch of waterfront.

Maarten was very kind, helpful, informative and interesting. We saw him the afternoon we arrived. We didn't see him again after he shut down the windmill that evening, but he was always available if we had a question.

We would love to return to this idyllic spot.

Wonderful, unique home!

  • 5 of 5

Myself and 3 other women came to Amsterdam for a girl's trip and started with two nights in the windmill. It was unforgettable! The area was quiet, relaxing and beautiful during our stay in late March. We walked into the village (little bit of a walk but very doable) to grocery shop and eat. We also used the 4 bikes from the windmill! The bed and bedding was SO comfortable. The stairs are very steep but there are plenty of handrails and ropes to keep yourself steady. We really enjoyed the space and would highly recommend a stay!

Cozy beds, wonderful hospitality, lovely town

  • 5 of 5

We arrived later than expected after our flight had been delayed 22 hours. Maarten greeted us so warmly. We felt like he had been a longtime friend. That night, we sunk into our incredibly comfortable beds and slept well. We loved staying at the Mill House with lovely views, a charming town and everything we needed. The history behind the Windmill is also so interesting. We feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to stay here. Thank you Maarten for your great communication and warm hospitality!

Once in a lifetime opportunity

  • 5 of 5

It was such a treat to celebrate our 25th anniversary with a visit to Abcoude and Maarten's wonderful windmill. We travelled a lot through the region by car, so staying just outside of Amsterdam made it a lot easier to get out and on the road. The unit is a short bike ride to the center of town and the train station, and wonderfully situated with canals and biking activity on one side, and expansive farm land and a view of the town center on the other. Everything inside is just fascinating, and Maarten was a wonderful host. We remained in contact during our stay, and he helped us with a lot of questions about the area. The rental description is accurate and is not a good option for the mobility challenged or where small children might go unsupervised. All furnishings are very comfortable, and the unit is stocked with everything you would need to be comfortable during your stay. Our only regret was that we travelled to all the wonderful and quaint towns around the region and didn't spend more time relaxing at the windmill.

Visiting the Fatherland

  • 5 of 5

My sister, husband and I stayed in the windmill as a part of our Dutch heritage trip to the Netherlands. We took an Uber to the windmill and all of us were in awe when we arrived, even the Uber driver! Maarten was fantastic in his communication and we enjoyed meeting him. Staying in the windmill is truly a once in a lifetime experience. We loved hearing the cows entering the back pasture and the bees humming in the garden. We rode the provided bikes into Abcoude and had the best time eating in the city. Abcoude is a delightful town with a wonderful grocery and enjoyable options for dining. We appreciated the use of the bikes, especially getting to the train station. If you're planning to take the train into the city, there is a ticket machine at the train station. Caution, the machine would not take our U.S. credit cards, even with the chip. We had to ride back into town to get enough coins for the machine. Just be prepared! The ride to the train station is beautiful and it is quite easy to get into Amsterdam On our last morning we were delighted and honored to help hoist the sails on the windmill. Thank you Maarten for providing us with ample information, helping us settle in, and making the start to our Dutch Dream Trip truly fabulous!

Most guests enjoy visiting Amsterdam during the day and relaxing around the mill after. Watch the river, the land and embrace the simple beauty of country life. To stay in an authentique and operational mill is simply unique.

Mondrian's painting of this mill is in the National Museum!
