About Marianne and George Carroll

George and I took a trip through the Atlantic Provences and Cheticamp was the one place we really wanted to return to. I told our family and friends we found a small French fishing village that reminded us of Ireland AND WE COULD DRIVE TO IT! We had the house built from 2004-2007 by local master builder Tommy Chaisson. The intention was to build small cottage, but two things changed that - the excavator could not do a crawl space so we got a whole level we had not planned on and then Tommy said the view from the upper floor was so fantastic he could not give us the low roof in our plans, so we got a third floor. The builders loved working on the upper level watching the whales come into the cove. We were in Vermont, and we came up to a quite a surprise. The interior is mostly wood - floors, ceilings and beams with an open spacious design that gives full view of the water. We share our time between Cheticamp and Vermont with our four children and four grandchildren. We started renting the house in 2007. We find the spaciousness of the house invites celebration. We host weddings, birthdays and family reunions as well as intimate quiet vacations and honeymoons. We get so much joy out of hearing the great times our guests have had and so many return. So, the idea of a small cottage grew to such proportions that it is shared with many others and this has surprisingly become a wonderful gift. We especially love the Cheticamp reunions. People born in Cheticamp booking the house for their family and siblings to come home to be with parents and relatives. We get several of these bookings a year. Then we get to know the people and their relatives and so much about the area. This summer we have two weddings, one 50th birthday party, and a 60th birthday party. It is such a joy to help plan these celebrations. I love it when George and I get to come up alone. It is like returning to Paradise. Just walking into the house takes my breath away.

Why Marianne and George Carroll chose Cape Breton Island

La Maison is at the end of Cheticamp Island attached to the mainland by a strip of land. It is quiet, peaceful, naturally raw and rugged. The house stands on a high piece of land surrounded by natural growth sloping to the cliffs above the water. Its architecture is open, spacious and elegant lending itself to an intimate vacation for two as well as a celebrations for family and friends. It is the perfect place to come and be alone and rest, read, kayak and hike and also the best place to gather with favorite people. Our children love being here. There are eight miles of hiking trails right on the island and so much wild life. One summer we had two eagles fishing for breakfast right outside the kitchen window every morning. Guests and carpenters have seen the whales from the house. We love to listen to them communicating at night Lobster and crab and mussels are caught and harvested off the island and wild berries are all over the island for picking in season. I love the sunrising over the Cape Breton Highlands and everyone loves to bring a blanket up the hill and watch the sun fall into the ocean at the end of the day. The night sky is phenomenal. It feels as if you can reach up and touch the stars... The sky is so dark and the stars so bright. This is why we love where the house is. It is just amaziing.

What makes this house unique

Whenever we walk into this house it takes our breath away| I guess its the expansive views when the front door opens to the high ceilings and light natural wood beams looking through to the glass back door viewing the large deck overlooking the water and rising moon over the Cape Breton Highlands. I would say and have heard guests say beside being so beautiful, the house is so spacious. One guest said that no matter how many people were in the house he could always find a quiet place to read. That meant a lot to me because that is what I wanted out of the design. The colors are neutral giving way to the outside. Nature is the star, the water, the mountains and wildlife.

This house is so beautiful, comfortable, and accommodating. The owner is always available by phone and will be there for any questions that may come up. The deck is so great and let's you enjoy the views from multiple directions. I can not say enough about this wonderful location on the end of the road that provides all the privacy and serenity you could wish for. All the bedrooms are decorated to be warm and inviting. The people of Cheticamp are gracious and welcoming. The house is not far from restaurants and other shops in the area. If you have a large family gathering or just a small group, you will find this house will accommodate all. I would highly recommend this property to everyone.

The home and setting were even more beautiful than presented in the pictures.

Our family had a wonderful week in this beautiful home. The setting on the water was so relaxing. The spacious house easily accommodated our two sons, their wives and our two young grandchildren (6 adults and 2 children). We enjoyed dinner on the deck each night and walking the nearby trails at sunrise and sunset. The children enjoyed playing in the sand at the nearby beach. We stayed August 6 to August 13

Perfect Cape Breton Vaca

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from an amazing vacation on Chetacamp island. This was our 4th annual 3 generation vacation. We have gone somewhere different every year: Outerbanks, Martha's Vineyard & Acadia. This was by far our favorite house! The views were amazing and we enjoyed the quiet walking trail right behind the house. We loved that the town was not super touristy but had everything we needed. Our pre schoolers loved the beach close by and the quiet island for exploring and flying a kite. The house is very comfortable with ample gathering space. The only disappointment were the kayaks, we had 3 couples that were looking forward to kayaking to the beach but one was broken and the one in working condition for a very small person. Other than that it was wonderful and we hope to make it back!

A truly beautiful house with stunning views

  • 5 of 5

For our annual family reunion (3 couples in our 50s and 60s, plus our 90 year old matriarch) we stayed at Marianne's lovely upscale house with stunning views of Cape Breton Island. We appreciated the end-of-road privacy coupled with being so close to town, plus the adjacent beach and trails where we saw eagles (quite close-up) and pilot whales. It is certainly one of the best situated, and best looking houses in the Cheticamp area. The house was comfortable (definitely including beds) and beautifully furnished, and I never tired of the marvelous views to the mountains across the bay, and the Milky Way on clear nights from the deck.

My sister-in-law writes: "We loved the beautiful waterside views from the entire house and really appreciated the modern European windows. The location is great for hiking up the hill to view the abundant wildlife on the other side. Our bedroom on the main floor on the right was very comfortable and nice. Our only problems were the small bathtub as the only way to get clean (it was difficult to climb into and out of), and the lack of thicker window covers for privacy at night and to keep out the light of the large street light that streamed into our room at night."

To her remarks I would echo her comments about the abundant, super high quality windows, and add that two of the 4 bathrooms have extremely spacious showers, and the upstairs bathroom does not have shower or bathtub, so the couple in the upstairs space showered downstairs. We stayed in late July, and the third floor upstairs was uncomfortably warm to sleep in until we purchased (and left for future guests) a fan. Unfortunately, one of the kayaks had a slow leak so we did not get to use those (Marianne tells me that it will be repaired this winter), but it is clear that the bay that the house overlooks would be a great spot for kayaking. We loved swimming by the nearby dock, where I would guesstimate the water was in the mid 60s Fahrenheit during out stay.

Overall, we had a wonderful time and would definitely consider returning to this spacious, modern home if we visit Cheticamp again.

From the moment of booking, Marianne was very prompt and patient with my 1000 question! We opened the door and all I kept saying was Wow! the house is gorgeous. The woodwork throughout and open floor plan makes it feel so comfortable. The bedrooms, (decorated beautifully) has very comfortable beds and the entire house was extremely clean. We cooked dinner every night for 8-10+ people, and there were plenty of serving dishes, extras we didn't think of bringing (like coffee filters) and I was able to do my laundry before we came home with the washer and dryer available in the basement. The views of the ocean are indescribable. Very close by there is a walking path that we did a couple of nights that had the most amazing sunset views. There is a dock within walking distance that we did fishing off of after dinner. Honestly, I won't stay anywhere else in Cape Breton after staying here. Between the location, amenities, and views, I fell in love with this house! Thank you Marianne for such a wonderful family vacation! You will be hearing from us again!

Family reunion that we wished didn't have to end

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful family reunion in this beautiful cottage. Its location is ideal as it is within walking distance to the beach and is very quiet. The water and mountain views from the its wraparound deck and upstairs room are stunning. We felt like time was standing still in this most unique place. The owner, Marianne, was very friendly and helpful and answered all of my questions This 'once in a lifetime' family vacation is one we are not likely to forget.

Owner's Response: Dear Paula, Thank you for the wonderful review and your email about the great week. We love hosting Cheticamp Reunions. The spaciousness of the house really lends itself to dinner parties and gatherings. It must have been wonderful getting together with your family for the week. And, it is so important for the children to know their extended family. What a beautiful place your grew up in. Thanks also for the pictures. I will add two of them to the photos on HomeAway if that is alright with you. Your camera has a great wide angle lens. We will look forward to your return. Warmest regards, Marianne and George

Cheticamp is at the Base of the National Park on the Cabot Trail. It is an highly active small town with about twenty restaurants, hiking, shopping and an excellent Base Lodge with history and information about the area, slide shows and movies about wild life and an up-todate store for you hiking and kayaking needs. into the National Park. Cape Breton Island is the setting for Longfellow's compelling story, EVANGELINE, about the deportation of the French Acadians in the eighteenth century. The story continued for the people of Cheticamp when they bartered with their prison guards in the Channel Islands to be returned to their land for fifty years of indentured servitude. History is lived here, not only that of the Acadians and MicMac First Nation People, but also the French, Scotts and Irish, whose ships found the land and whose people stayed. Enjoy nature. Whales and eagles have been seen from the deck. Have fun dancing 'till three in the morning. Listen to the best fiddling, and eat fine food. Play golf and tennis. Tour museums and elegant Canadian Pacific hotels. Take a day at the Spa. Hike and swim and kayak and come home to relaxing luxury and dinner on the deck overlooking the water. Stay up for the beautiful northern sky and get up for a Cape Breton sunrise. Welcome to Heaven! Enjoy!

Other Activities: Hike the many trails off the Cabot Trail in the National Forest. The Skyline trail with boardwalk pathways down to the ocean is our favorite. We have seen mother and baby moose munching on branches fifty feet from us. Go whale watching on the Zodiac where you can almost touch the whales or on one of the whale cruises out of Cheticamp or Pleasant Bay. Ocean and Bay kayaking right outside the house. Listen to the best fiddlling at the Kinsman, Doreyman, Normaway Inn, Parkside , Le Gabriel and more . Walk to the beach. Swim in the warm gulf stream and soak up the strong northern sun.

Golf: LePortage Gulf Club is in Cheticamp.
