Arnie grew up in Texas and later moved to Norway where he has been a cook for many years. He took his education in Austin, Tx. He has worked in different restaurants with different foods and has in addition to his great BBQ skills, also a long experience with other cuisines. Ellen is a gestaltterapist and has been working with this for many years. She grew up in Stavanger, Norway. She has for many years looked for a place with a comfortable climate. The combination of beautiful nature, growing vegetables and living in a slower pace has been the motivation.
Ellen and Arnie Sanchez purchased this barn in 2014
We have been travelling for a few years looking for a property in France. Coming to Dordogne and search here, made us really fall in love with this area. The landscape, the history, and the climate suites us very well.
The property is located overlooking the hillsides of Sarlat and with the information of the ancient history - we also were intrigued by this.
For us it was the immediate feeling of peace and tranquility when came to view the property. The location on the hilltop overlooking the valleys was beautiful. The history of the place, and the historic features also contributed to our interest. Coming into the kitchen and looking through the open door to the sunny terrace.was the moment it just felt right. We both knew that this is our place. We could see how this could be our future home and how welcoming in also would feel to family and guests. The size of property, and the spacious feeling we enjoyed as well.
Lovely time, lovely people - loads to see and do. Towns and villages breathtaking. We all had a fabulous holiday.
Lovely to relax at the house - the pool was FANTASTIC - the children loved it - in fact the pool made the holiday very memorable for the children.

This was one of the best vacation properties we have rented in 10 years. The house was cozy, well equipped, and very nice for our group of 6. Ellen and Arnie are welcoming hosts. The kitchen is stocked for cooking a nice meal at the end of each day after exploring the Dordogne valley. The kids had room to play outside, and we all enjoyed sharing a meal and then sitting in the living room in front of the fire. There is plenty of room for 8 in the 4 bedrooms (2 up and 2 down). I can imagine that summer visits are great too - especially with that large pool and the expansive property. I highly recommend having a car.
We've had the best time in your home, everything was perfect from the warm welcome to wine on arrival, Norwegian Christmas biscuits for the children and the constant supply of wood for the burner... the house is clean, comfortable and decorated with great taste to make you feel instantly at home. The environment is stunning with hills and forest... couldn't recommend this property more. It's with a very heavy heart that we left your place! But we'll be back!
From the initial warm welcome to the last goodbye, our stay in Sarlat was everything we hoped for. The Gite was well equipped and and very comfortable with everything we required. The pool was kept immaculately clean and was large enough to swim in although may not be as suitable for young children. The Gite is only 5 minutes by car from Sarlat which is a wonderful medieval town with many good restaurants but we would also recommend Arnie's cooking and the view from the 'Terrace' at Chateau La Benechie. The area around Sarlat is beautiful with many different Chateaux and the Dordogne very close. There is so much to see that we hope to visit again next year.
We had a wonderful time at this lovely gite. The decor and presentation is chic and photo-shoot ready - plump cushions, crisp sheets and generous towels abound. We had really hot weather for the week and our two main pleasures were eating in the courtyard at the large and shaded outdoor table, and the large (and very deep) swimming pool, before arriving I was worried about the four children, aged 3-5, accessing the swimming pool without an accompanying adult, but it was behind a wooden fence which was a great relief. Their was very little shallow end in the pool for the small children but they had a great time on the various inflatables and there were plenty of sun loungers and umbrellas for the adults.
The owners, Ellen and Arnie were very welcoming and invited us to use the delicious tomatoes from their abundant veg patch which was a bonus! Would definitely recommend to others.
Upon arrival at Arnie and Ellen's property, we were greeted by our hosts and given a lovely tour of their estate. Both were extremely laid back and friendly, Ellen even leading us into town and pointing out grocery stores, and train station where we were to pick up a member of our group before dinner. The house that we stayed in had lovely charm and was very comfortable with all the things we needed for meals and relaxation. As it was very hot, we found their lovely pool a wonderful respite for cooling off after jaunts to Sarlat center, and area gardens. Close to everything, but with a private feel, I would highly recommend this property, our only regret was not getting the opportunity to try Arnie's cooking, as they run a small restaurant on their terrace! Would happily stay again!
Five Stars Plus! This place is a true gem! It is a completely renovated stone cottage in the quiet and beautiful french countryside-- but only about a five minute drive from Sarlat. The cottage was recently renovated and there are multiple thoughtful touches that make it really special. It is spacious inside, with multiple bedrooms. The sheets and blankets were top quality. There is a washer and dryer for clothes. There is a dishwasher! The glasses, silverware and plates were very nice-- in fact the entire kitchen was beautiful. There are 3 (!) different types of coffee makers and a nice and new refrigerator. Two bathrooms- one upstairs with shower. The one downstairs has a shower and a separate room for the toilet (very french!). The sitting area downstairs is cozy and really comfortable-- nice couches and a stone hearth. Bed-wise, there are two bedrooms downstairs- one with a queen and the other with two twin beds. Two bedrooms upstairs with the same type of bed situation. (We all slept downstairs so can't comment on the sleeping upstairs.)You also have access to a beautiful outdoor pool if you feel like a dip-- it was a little rainy during our visit but the kids swam one day. We really enjoyed our morning coffee outside listening to the birds wake up. Parking is right next to the cottage- plenty of room for two cars at least. We spent a lot of time sightseeing the wonderful castles and chateaux but always enjoyed coming "home" at the end of the day. If we come back-- we will try to stay here again! (P.S. the owners are really nice and live in a larger house very, very close by. They both speak perfect english as well).
The village of Sarlat has great markets on the weekends all year round including their Christmas markets in December. Foie gras, good wine and small great restaurants and cafes are at the center of Sarlat.
There are many beautiful villages to be seen around the area including Castelnaud- la -Chapelle, Domme, La Roque- Gageac, Beynac -et-Cazenac. These are all on the listing of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. A drive along the back roads of this area is a very nice experience.
Visiting Beynac and other medieval castles is where one can get guided tours. Renting a canoe along the Dordogne river on a hot summer is highly recommended or taking a guided tour in a river boat down the river is also very popular. Hot air balloon rides along the river and surroundings is also very popular too.
The romantic garden of Marqueyssac and it's scenic walk is also a great experience. The area is great for biking as well.
