About Ellen and Arnie Sanchez

Arnie grew up in Texas and later moved to Norway where he has been a cook for many years. He took his education in Austin, Tx. He has worked in different restaurants with different foods and has in addition to his great BBQ skills, also a long experience with other cuisines. Ellen is a gestaltterapist and has been working with this for many years. She grew up in Stavanger, Norway. She has for many years looked for a place with a comfortable climate. The combination of beautiful nature, growing vegetables and living in a slower pace has been the motivation.

Ellen and Arnie Sanchez purchased this barn in 2014

Why Ellen and Arnie Sanchez chose Sarlat-la-Canéda

We have been travelling for a few years looking for a property in France. Coming to Dordogne and search here, made us really fall in love with this area. The landscape, the history, and the climate suites us very well.

The property is located overlooking the hillsides of Sarlat and with the information of the ancient history - we also were intrigued by this.

What makes this barn unique

For us it was the immediate feeling of peace and tranquility when came to view the property. The location on the hilltop overlooking the valleys was beautiful. The history of the place, and the historic features also contributed to our interest. Coming into the kitchen and looking through the open door to the sunny terrace.was the moment it just felt right. We both knew that this is our place. We could see how this could be our future home and how welcoming in also would feel to family and guests. The size of property, and the spacious feeling we enjoyed as well.

Beautiful stay in Dordogne

  • 5 of 5

Ellen and Arnie Sanchez, our wonderful hosts, made us feel right at home in the beautiful stone house that we rented from them. Although their own home was not too far from it, we had plenty of privacy. The house is very tastefully decorated and extremely well cared for. Unfortunately, the weather was cool so we were not able to use the very large saltwater pool. If you choose to stay here, do not fail to have a most delicious meal prepared by them and served on their terrace with a million dollar view. I can't wait to come back!

Perfektes Ferienhaus, uneingeschränkt zu empfehlen!

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful place for a small family reunion!

  • 5 of 5

Our French and American family of eight had a great 2-week stay at in the Grange. The house is spacious, clean, comfortable, and charming with its blend of rustic stone, tile floors, massive fireplace, and substantial contemporary furnishings, and a kitchen with super cooking and serving ware. It's an unfussy place where guests can relax, swim at the lovely salt water pool, lounge at the huge umbrella-sheltered table on the private patio (where we took all our meals), or retreat to private space to read or nap or handle business via good wifi and email. And everybody in the group appreciated the showers with abundant hot water and great water pressure.

A ten minute drive from Sarlat, with its stunning Medieval center and massive Wednesday and Saturday markets, the house feels as though it's a hundred miles away--quiet (except for birdsong), much cooler in summer, a star spangled night sky with little light pollution, and deer in the field below the swimming pool.

The location is great for exploring castles, prehistoric cliff dwellings and caves, fabulous gardens, canoeing, and enjoying the Perigord cuisine.

Arnie and Ellen are the best hosts I could imagine: open, friendly, available and willing to solve small glitches such as a short lapse in WiFi or give advice on their favorite restaurants. Meeting them and enjoying their company for an evening was a pleasure.

Gorgeous country living

  • 5 of 5

We shared the larger cottage with another family and absolutely fell in love with the property, Sarlat and the Dordogne. What a fantastic base for exploring the region. Ellen and Arnie are warm and kind & their cooking is delicious - be sure to take advantage of dining on the terrace!

Car: recommended

The village of Sarlat has great markets on the weekends all year round including their Christmas markets in December. Foie gras, good wine and small great restaurants and cafes are at the center of Sarlat.

There are many beautiful villages to be seen around the area including Castelnaud- la -Chapelle, Domme, La Roque- Gageac, Beynac -et-Cazenac. These are all on the listing of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. A drive along the back roads of this area is a very nice experience.

Visiting Beynac and other medieval castles is where one can get guided tours. Renting a canoe along the Dordogne river on a hot summer is highly recommended or taking a guided tour in a river boat down the river is also very popular. Hot air balloon rides along the river and surroundings is also very popular too.

The romantic garden of Marqueyssac and it's scenic walk is also a great experience. The area is great for biking as well.
