About this property

Bairnwick Too - One of the Best Bluff Views on the Sewanee Mountain

This beautiful mountain retreat is nestled in 8 acres of hardwood trees and mountain laurels sitting right on the bluff with gorgeous views. Located 8 minutes from the Sewanee Gates entering The University of the South and the St. Andrew's-Sewanee campuses, this is a great place for alumni and parents to stay when visiting the mountain. The drive to the house is less than 2 hours from Nashville, 1 hour from Chattanooga, 3 hours from Atlanta, and 2 1/2 hours from Birmingham.

* For people who are looking for a romantic getaway, Bairnwick Too makes it easy to unwind by the fireplace, on the screened-in porch, sitting on the front deck, or relaxing in the hammock. There are several restaurants and nature trails in the area.

* For families looking for a place to let the kids hike, bike, climb, cave, swim, and explore, the Sewanee-Monteagle Mountain and South Cumberland State Park are great destinations. The Perimeter Trail around Sewanee is fabulous for hikes and mountain biking. The Mountain Goat Trail is a paved "rails to trails" mixed-use walking, biking, and running trail connecting Sewanne-Monteagle-Tracy City. Fiery Gizzard, Foster Falls, and a wonderful zip line course are all within 30 minutes.

* For music lovers, The Caverns Amphitheater venue in Pelham is just 25 minutes away.

* For golfers, Sewanee has a wonderfully unique and challenging nine-hole/18-tee golf course with great views. Sweetens Cove (ranked by Golfweek as the 21st best course in the U.S. you can play) is just 45 minutes away.

The house blends in nicely with its natural surroundings and is well-appointed with hardwood and ceramic tile floors, floor-to-ceiling casement windows, and ceiling fans in every room. The living room has a wood-burning stone fireplace. The dining table seats 8 and the kitchen has everything you should need. High-speed fiber internet is available throughout the house. There is a high-definition 50-inch TV with Apple TV and a variety of streaming services including access to all the common cable and local channels along with DVDs and a stereo with connections for your audio devices. The master bedroom has a king bed, TV, and private bathroom with a walk-in shower and heated tiled floors. The main bathroom has a tub and shower. The second bedroom has a double bed as well as a single bed suitable for a child. The third bedroom is located downstairs accessed by a spiral staircase and has a double bed, a sleeper sofa, and two trundle beds. (The spiral staircase could be a challenge for older people or someone with mobility limitations.)

The deck overlooks the bluff and has a chiminea for cooler nights. The screened-in porch has a porch swing, lounge chairs, ceiling fans, outside speakers, and a wrought iron dining table for four. The driveway is lined with fruit trees and wildflowers abound. Deer, hawks, songbirds, and crickets will keep you company.

Bairnwick Too is named after my grandparents’ house, which is now the Bairnwick Women's Center at Sewanee. Bairnwick is Gaelic and means 'House of Children.' We seek to retain this spirit and Bairnwick Too is a wonderful place for families to gather. The house is located in Deep Woods, which is behind St. Andrews-Sewanee School and overlooks the same valley as seen from Green's View. The surrounding woods are fun to explore and there are plenty of trees to climb.

Please note that you must be over 25 years old to rent and you must be in attendance. Due to the bluff and 70-foot drop-off, parents will need to provide appropriate supervision of children at all times and the house may not be appropriate for families with small children. There is not a fence and everybody will need to exercise caution around the edge of the bluff.

Amazing cabin!
This cabin is amazing. It is spacious, very clean, well decorated, and is by far the most well-stocked place we have ever rented. The owner’s personal touches (favorite books, family photos, etc.) made us feel like we were staying at a relative’s house. And I cannot say enough about the breathtaking view. We will definitely be returning to this place. And George was awesome to work with. Communication was excellent. It was the best weekend get away we’ve ever had.

A long fall weekend on a bluff house in TN MOUNTAINS
Spectacular views with a mood lighting screened porch where we enjoyed the wind and sound of crickets . Abundance of towels , toiletries , kitchen condiments with board games and a big fireplace with wood provided. Plentiful seating for the whole family to lounge and walking in surrounding woods viewing wildlife. The chimnea on the second deck was a great place for making smores while watching the sunsets. We will choose this property again. One of our family members was quite taken with the outdoor shower with hot water. We texted the owner to ask a couple questions and he got back to us immediately. We were impressed at the books and games and had a fun time as a family

Great view
Great sunset view across the valley. Cabin is very clean, but is lacking updated decor and furnishings. And it is missing the small amenities we usually find in other rentals… e.g. a Kuerig machine, but no coffee. If you want clean basic house with ample space and a great Mountain View, it’s a fine option for a stay in Monteagle/ Sewanee area.

I grew up in Sewanee near Morgan Steep for those familiar with the area. So when we drew up our list of features we desired the most, we knew what we wanted: a gorgeous bluff view with an abundance of rock outcroppings in a wooded setting where we could watch the sunset each night. We also wanted a house that is open and inviting so it brings everyone together. A large screened-in porch and wood burning fireplace were also must-haves. In short, we wanted a place where we can relax, kick back, enjoy nature and spending time with friends and family.

Why they chose this property

We wanted a place in the mountains that was easy to get to on the weekends. For people just looking for a get-away weekend in the mountains where you can leave work at 4:00 from Nashville, Birmingham, Atlanta, or Chattanooga and be at the house by 7:00, Sewanee can't be beat. For people with a 'Sewanee connection,' Bairnwick Too is a great place to hang out with your kid or fellow alumns. My father and grandfather were professors at the University of the South and my grandmother routinely opened her house (which is now the Women's Center)to dates, parents, former faculty, and other visitors to the University. So picking Sewanee to have a vacation house was an easy choice.

What makes this property unique

What we love about Sewanee is the variety of things you can do. There is always something going on in Sewanee from concerts, guest lecturers, plays, and sporting events sponsored by the university, to riding trails, mountain biking, golf, and tennis. There are dozens of hiking trails with beautiful wild flowers around Sewanee. The South Cumberland State Park has some of the best trails in the Southeast with great river walks and beautiful vista views. Foster Falls and Fall Creek Falls are spectacular. For the more adventuresome, the area offers excellent rock climbing and caving. Pearl's and High Point(formerly owned by Al Capone) are two of our favorite restaurants.
