I am a retired French teacher who was born and spent most of my
childhood years in Montreal, Canada except for 5 years in Orange Park,
Florida where my father was a psychologist at the Yerkes chimpanzee
lab and a year on scholarship at a university in Neuchatel,
Switzerland. When I returned to Montreal I met my husband (on a blind
date ) at McGill University where I was an undergrad student and my
husband was a medical student. When we graduated he returned to Penna,
his home state, for his internship. After that his residency training
took us to Texas, Maryland, London, England and Wisconsin. During this
time we had two sons and later adopted a daughter and took in foster
daughters whom we wanted to adopt but the mothers just wanted to hold
on to them loosely. In 1989 my husband’s friend, from undergrad years
at Gettysburg College, purchased Nisbet Plantation on Nevis and we
started buying land next door. We ended up with 4 acres on the ocean
and now that we are retired we live in our own villa for 5 winter
months and rent CORAL REEF VILLA.I have spent every summer of my life
in Nova Scotia and only stay in Penna spring and fall for doctor
appointments, and other essential visits. I am proud to be a
Canadian citizen as well as an American citizen .
Jane Paul purchased this cottage in 1985
Your cabin is beautiful and I love the furniture. We found it so nice to come home after a long day of sightseeing and boy did we sightsee!
We saw a male pheasant and we got some nice pictures of a deer and the chipmunk here.
The master bedroom is amazing. One of my dream rooms!
Thank you for the phone calls and Doreen was wonderful. Everyone in Nova Scotia is so friendly no matter where we went it felt like home.
While this cottage is secluded, feeling like we were a bit 'off the grid' , we found it so convenient to access all amenities that we required such as local grocery stores and restaurants. We used this cottage as our 'home base' while exploring the South Shore of Nova Scotia. The drives to Chester, Mahone Bay, Peggy's Cove, and Lunenburg were pleasurable as the main road for this cottage is right near the Lighthouse Route so maps were not even required.....you just follow the highway. Roads in the area are very well marked for exploring, as well.
The cottage itself is very comfortable and clean and it provides everything that you probably need, including internet service and washer and dryer. The best feature was the main bedroom that consists of 2 walls of windows that overlooks the water. It was so peaceful.....it really was hard to leave everyday to do the area exploring when you could just lie in bed with your coffee and enjoy the views. While we were there, I saw 5 deer and a fox so this provided some entertainment.
What was something that we did not think of when booking and learned by experience was that Chester does not have the 'tour buses' running in and out of town all day and to us that was a positive. When we visited other sites, this was sometimes overwhelming, especially in Peggy's Cove. You missed all this tourist action for the most part in Chester.
Jane Paul, the owner was incredible. She was at the cottage to great us and was very knowledgeable about the area. She was staying close by and provided us with absolutely anything we needed..usually within minutes. She provided emails prior to our stay detailing directions, recommended restaurants and activities. I can say that anyone who takes a trip to this area MUST go to the Shore Club for the lobster dinner, They closed for the season on October 9th this year so I am not sure when they would re-open again.
I would not hesitate to recommend this property to a family (3 bedrooms with closet and dresser drawer space and washer and dryer), or couple. It was indeed an enjoyable stay ....one that we would like to repeat one day.
What a wonderful week we had recently at Sandy Cove Cottage! Everything exceeded our expectations: the location of the cottage close to the water's edge, the sunny wharf with its comfortable chairs, and the private sandy beach on the property not far from the cottage. Boats were also available, had we wanted to use them.
The interior of the cottage is cozy, furnished with over-sized chairs and Nova Scotia antiques. We appreciated the well-equipped kitchen and the superior linen on the beds. Everything was spotless, including all the appliances. We slept well in the glass-enclosed master bedroom, only feet away from the gentle rhythm of the incoming tides. One night we saw shooting stars in the sky, which were reflected in the calm waters of the cove--very special!
The owners of the cottage are extremely attentive to the needs of their guests and offer a wealth of information about nearby places of interest-- museums, restaurants, craft shops, golf courses, and more. Thanks to them, we came home with some delicious smoked salmon, produced locally (a real treat). We made visits to various South Shore communities, as well as to the Annapolis Valley and even to Pictou. All were easily manageable day trips.
Sandy Cove Cottage provides a bit of everything: an idyllic, comfortable setting, plus plenty of nearby opportunities for stimulation. We loved it!
Recently we had the good fortune to spend a week at Sandy Cove Cottage in Chester, Nova Scotia. It couldn't have been more pleasant!
First of all, the setting is peaceful and idyllic. The cottage sits a few feet from a quiet cove. It is surrounded by pine and oak trees with an open field of tall grasses and wildflowers nearby. Wildlife abounds. During our visit we saw deer, wild turkeys, lots of land and sea birds, rabbits and squirrels. I am told there are often foxes as well. The views of the bay from the dock are spectacular. You can also take in the scenery from the flat roof of the ell of the cottage or maybe just find a lounge chair for an afternoon snooze.
The cottage is well-furnished. There are three comfortable bedrooms, a full bath, a small but well-equipped kitchen, a dining area and two sitting rooms with comfortable chairs.
For entertainment there are books, TV, CD/DVD players and radio. The cottage is heated for the cooler times. It is equipped with both dishwasher and washing machine.
In addition to the many hours we spent enjoying the tranquility of the cottage, we also enjoyed sampling the fare at the several restaurants in the Chester area as well as perusing the art galleries which offer both paintings and ceramics among other creations. The golf course is scenically located and open to the public.
An added plus is the friendly, outgoing nature of the hosts as well as their constant attentiveness to needs or requests for information.
In short, we highly recommend this venue for a wonderful stay in Nova Scotia.
A perfect spot to rest and relax nestled on the water at Chester Basin. The cottage is so cozy and well equipped and you are free to use the boats at the dock' Where else can you open your eyes in the morning and look out at the water where a sailboat swings on it's mooring. Walking trails through pines and maples are a great way to start your day. The owners are on the property and are anxious to provide local knowledge if asked. The quaint towns of Lunenburg and Chester are close and provide a variety of shops and museums This is the spot for a truly peaceful and restful vacation and one which will draw you back time after time.
Sandy Cove Cottage is a rare find. Nestled next to a field of Queen Anne's lace, the cottage is a classic. The beach, wharf, and boats offer loads of entertainment. The owners Jane and Ron are wonderful and go out of their way to make sure their vacationers have a good time. We had such a good time that we hope to be back again soon.
Sandy Cove Cottage is a rare find. Nestled in a beautiful setting by a field of Queen Anne's lace flowers with access to beach, wharf, and boats on the property, it is hard to find a more peaceful place. The cottage was classic and very clean and the owners Jane and Ron could not do enough for us. We will definitely be back.
