About Jane Paul

I am a retired French teacher who was born and spent most of my

childhood years in Montreal, Canada except for 5 years in Orange Park,

Florida where my father was a psychologist at the Yerkes chimpanzee

lab and a year on scholarship at a university in Neuchatel,

Switzerland. When I returned to Montreal I met my husband (on a blind

date ) at McGill University where I was an undergrad student and my

husband was a medical student. When we graduated he returned to Penna,

his home state, for his internship. After that his residency training

took us to Texas, Maryland, London, England and Wisconsin. During this

time we had two sons and later adopted a daughter and took in foster

daughters whom we wanted to adopt but the mothers just wanted to hold

on to them loosely. In 1989 my husband’s friend, from undergrad years

at Gettysburg College, purchased Nisbet Plantation on Nevis and we

started buying land next door. We ended up with 4 acres on the ocean

and now that we are retired we live in our own villa for 5 winter

months and rent CORAL REEF VILLA.I have spent every summer of my life

in Nova Scotia and only stay in Penna spring and fall for doctor

appointments, and other essential visits. I am proud to be a

Canadian citizen as well as an American citizen .

Jane Paul purchased this cottage in 1985

Guestbook comments from the owner

Your cabin is beautiful and I love the furniture. We found it so nice to come home after a long day of sightseeing and boy did we sightsee!

We saw a male pheasant and we got some nice pictures of a deer and the chipmunk here.

The master bedroom is amazing. One of my dream rooms!

Thank you for the phone calls and Doreen was wonderful. Everyone in Nova Scotia is so friendly no matter where we went it felt like home.

Perfectly as Advertised

  • 5 of 5

The owner is very kind, and maintains the property beautifully. There are several walks to areas on the Cove. The water is right out the door, and is an amazing view from the master bedroom, which has two ceiling to floor windows.

I would recommend this as a family place, with lots to do in the area. From a quiet space in the cottage, little villages are a short ride away.

It is a rental cottage on the cove. Peaceful, private, wonderful kayak for two.

  • 5 of 5

We arrived on Canada Day ( stores were closed)and Kathy ( the care taker) asked if she could buy groceries.😀? The owners gave us perfect directions to cottage. It is off the main road. We loved Chester and the restaurants Jane and Kathy recommended. We did take the usual tourists day trips but to be honest we preferred sitting in chairs with glass of wine and just relax and we loved to kayak in morning. Enjoyed

Cottage by the Sea

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful stay at Sandy Cove Cottage near Chester. General location is perfect for exploring Nova Scotia's south shore in all directions. Day trips SW to the seaside parks north to Halifax and NW to the Annapolis Valley's vineyards all easy day trips in addition to the nearby historic and charming towns of Chester, Mahone Bay etc. Bike rentals in M Bay and Hubbards for the Rails to Trails bike route running for almost 200 km and then there are the quiet coastal roads to bike or drive as well. Cottage is a cozy place with everything needed for a short or long stay. We cooked in half the time and ate out the rest. Wood all around except for a sitting room and the master bedroom which have lots of glass and light. Bring an eye-mask or you'll be up with the sun every day not that this is the end of the world! A few wildlife sitings, birds, flowers, a kayak and dock. Small sandy/gravel beach nearby. On a back bay i.e. not right on the outer (exposed) coastline. Extremely quiet which you'll notice immediately if you're from a city. A wonderful quiet. That said, the wifi is good so you can check out activities and restaurants easily. Chester golf course is a jewel. Nova Scotia wines (white mostly) and craft beers are excellent. Lots of very kind offers of info / ideas from the owner and the folks looking after the cabin. Highly recommend this place!

A quiet and secluded place, comfortable and well thought out.

  • 5 of 5

We had a great 11 night stay. The cottage was warm and cozy, and the views of the ocean were wonderful. There is another private beach within walking distance that we also had access to. Lots of amenities were close by, and trips to Lunenburg and Mahone Bay were easy and fun (we suggest the railroad museum in Lunenburg, the Ironworks Distillery, and the Fisheries Museum as worthy destinations). Although the fireplace and upper deck were out of order, those were small inconveniences, and won't deter me from giving this property a five star rating. Thanks, Jane and Paul!

Serenity..the only word to describe this place.

  • 5 of 5

While this cottage is secluded, feeling like we were a bit 'off the grid' , we found it so convenient to access all amenities that we required such as local grocery stores and restaurants. We used this cottage as our 'home base' while exploring the South Shore of Nova Scotia. The drives to Chester, Mahone Bay, Peggy's Cove, and Lunenburg were pleasurable as the main road for this cottage is right near the Lighthouse Route so maps were not even required.....you just follow the highway. Roads in the area are very well marked for exploring, as well.

The cottage itself is very comfortable and clean and it provides everything that you probably need, including internet service and washer and dryer. The best feature was the main bedroom that consists of 2 walls of windows that overlooks the water. It was so peaceful.....it really was hard to leave everyday to do the area exploring when you could just lie in bed with your coffee and enjoy the views. While we were there, I saw 5 deer and a fox so this provided some entertainment.

What was something that we did not think of when booking and learned by experience was that Chester does not have the 'tour buses' running in and out of town all day and to us that was a positive. When we visited other sites, this was sometimes overwhelming, especially in Peggy's Cove. You missed all this tourist action for the most part in Chester.

Jane Paul, the owner was incredible. She was at the cottage to great us and was very knowledgeable about the area. She was staying close by and provided us with absolutely anything we needed..usually within minutes. She provided emails prior to our stay detailing directions, recommended restaurants and activities. I can say that anyone who takes a trip to this area MUST go to the Shore Club for the lobster dinner, They closed for the season on October 9th this year so I am not sure when they would re-open again.

I would not hesitate to recommend this property to a family (3 bedrooms with closet and dresser drawer space and washer and dryer), or couple. It was indeed an enjoyable stay ....one that we would like to repeat one day.
