About JB Dyer
Profile: I have overseen the family-owned Hulls Cove property in Bar Harbor for 45 years and through 3 generations. I implemented the vacationrentals business at that property more than 20 years ago. The property was among the first vacationrentals in Bar Harbor and on Mt. Desert Island, and definitely the first in the Hulls Cove neighborhood that has always been considered the most historic and prestigious residential neighborhood in Bar Harbor. I brought to that effort my own background as an officer of national financial institutions, for a decade immediately following my graduation from business school at Dartmouth College. For those institutions, and subsequently on my own behalf, I was variously a commercial and industrial real estate developer, a financier, and syndicator throughout the US, including in these locations: Northern Maine; Boston, Mass.; Providence, RI; Newport, RI; Houston and Dallas, Texas; Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa, and Jacksonville, Fla.; and Beverly Hills, Cal. I attended these academic institutions: Phillips Academy (Andover, Mass.), Colby College, Harvard College, Dartmouth College (MBA), the University of Miami Law School, and the Univ. of Maryland. Social affiliations, some distantly past: the Bar Harbor Club, Carnegie Abbey (Newport, RI), the Club Elan (Houston, Texas); Le Club (Ft. Lauderdale), the Cumberland Club (Portland, Maine), the Tarratine Club (Bangor, Maine), the Union Boat Club (Boston), the Dartmouth Club (Boston). Retiring approximately years ago, I made it my goal to secure the position of the Hulls Cove property as the indisputably best vacationrental property among its 700 local competitors. Achieving that goal resulted from: continuously improving the physical aspects of the building and the grounds at the Hulls Cove property; carefully noting the practices and standards of extreme luxury resorts on both the East and West Coasts; and by ensuring that every guest was treated as I myself would expect to be treated.
JB Dyer purchased this House in 1979
Why JB Dyer chose Hulls Cove
The property owner has retained this property for over 4 decades, and has kept the property in this business, because innumerable guests have reported that the property favorably changed their lives and engendered some of the most fulfilling memories of their lifetimes. Every rating submitted by families coming to Oceans Edge since Homeaway began soliciting "reviews" has been a perfect-score 5-star rating -- as improbable as that may seem but for considering the prodigious effort of a very hard working staff, plus the honed skills of local and Maine-wide contractors and sub-contractors. The 'testimonials" section of this web site contains dozens of endorsements, all of them complimentary. The property's thousands of guests of 30 years regard the Hulls Cove property as the best in the business among the market area's 700 competitors -- or so they told me!! For the guests' reasoning, please see "unique benefits" immediately below.
What makes this House unique
(1) actual ocean frontage - (2) safer shoreline - (3) uncompromised privacy - (4) 1 mile to Acadia National Park - (5) wildlife - (6) endorsements - (7) 30-year reputation 1) Actual ocean frontage The subject property is truly on the ocean. 2) safer shoreline Unlike many other properties on Mount Desert Island’s shoreline, this property is free of steep cliffs and rip currents that would make difficult or dangerous access to the shore and to the ocean water itself, not to mention being a mortal danger to children or to the elderly. 3) Unobstructed oceanfront, unimpeded views, unlimited water access, and complete privacy. A public-way “Shore Path” commonly divides (often with metal fencing) the ocean shore from the ocean-side lawns of some of the otherwise desirable oceanfront properties in Bar Harbor. The Shore Path does not exist, at all, in the Hulls Cove neighborhood. Our guests therefore enjoy ocean views unobstructed by fences, hedges, gates, or the like. They can also enjoy the backyard patios and decks in privacy from gawkers. They can descend to the beach at any time in order to launch a kayak, or be alone with the sound of the waves. 4) Location The Reception area for Acadia National Park’s 30,000 acres is within 1 mile of the property. 5) Wildlife For noise and traffic and crowds not being a factor at the Hulls Cove property, a chief joy of our guests has consisted of observing wildlife in the very backyard of the property, night and day, as would be utterly impossible at other rental properties located near the din of Main Street. (Wildlife: white tailed deer and their fawns; pet red squirrels and chipmunks; mallard ducks and ducklings in the property’s pond and streams; foxes and raccoons; innumerable birds [eagles, owls, ospreys, woodpeckers, songbirds, red tailed hawks, and arctic birds]). 6) Endorsements Please see the owner’s web site, including photos and comments provided by previous guests. 7) Reputation Decades.

Hulls Cove Allure
JB has a beautiful place right on the ocean just minutes from Bar Harbor and quick access to Acadia national Park. He is very attentive and easy to reach and is very proud of his home, as he should be. The home and the grounds are impeccable. We enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend it to anyone.
These were superlative guests.
It was a pleasure to have them.
I would welcome them again anytime!
Lovely home and setting.
The home was perfect for our family. Unique property and location. JB was most helpful and accommodating.
A marvelous family. It was a pleasure for me to have them in that house -- the house was always meant for guests like that family.
Spectacular Ocean Front Home
This Hulls Cove Ocean front home has everything a family could imagine for a vacation. The dock and terrace are perfect for relaxing and the kitchen is well equipped for any dinner party with friends and family.
This was a delightful family.
Gracious, thoughtful, cheerful.
It was a pleasure to have them.
The property is meant for families like this 2-generation gathering of welcome guests.
McArthur's Bar Harbor family reunion
Proximity to Acadia National Park and all other amenties couldn't have been better.
Most importantly this property's location allowed our family to stay "outta the fray" should we so choose.
This was an extraordinarily gracious and courteous family.
The property is meant for families like this one, which brought much cheer to that house.
The house actually did not seem quite the same on the morning after they left following their 2 weeks there.
I wish them all the best.
Absolute perfection from start to finish! A beautiful property, managed to a 5 star outcome all around.
June family vacation
Everything about this vacation, minus a bit of rain, was absolutely spectacular with a huge part of that being John's wonderful home! The house was everything he said it would be and more and the view - it was a daily must to sit and feed the wildlife while taking it all in. We all were so comfortable and wanted for nothing in his home. thank you for making a memory for our family!
This was one of those families for which the property is intended.
They were enthusiastic, intellectually curious, adventurous, and extraordinarily gracious.
I wish them all the best in their years to come.
The property is located on the ocean, in the Hulls Cove neighborhood, in the Town of Bar Harbor.
1) Bar Harbor
Bar Harbor is the largest and most historic community on Mount Desert Island, in 'Downeast' Coastal Maine.
2) Mount Desert Island
Mount Desert Island's approximately 30,000 acres are chiefly comprised of the Acadia National Park.
3) Acadia National Park
Acadia rightfully claims to be one of the most beautiful scenic treasures in America, featuring both stunning ocean landscapes and mountainous woodlands undiminished by time or by man.
4) Things to do
Bar Harbor and Mt. Desert Island offer:
-- superior bars and restaurants (approximately 100), night clubs.
-- nearby athletic facilities (e.g., a nationally renowned and stunningly beautiful public golf course [Kebo]),
-- immediate proximity to the Park's salt and fresh water beaches, convenient and abundant connections to airports in Bangor (40 miles) and Trenton (15 minutes),
-- whale watching, deep sea fishing, sailing,
-- antique shopping and L.L. Beans nearby,
-- and signature lobsters night and day.
5) Things to do within, Acadia National Park:
The Park's main reception center, which is less than a mile from the subject property, is the gateway to 50 miles of historic "carriage roads" built by the Rockefellers, almost precisely 100 years ago, seemingly without regard to expense.
The carriage roads are devoid of automobiles of any kind. The perfectly maintained crushed stone roads are therefore ideal for:
-- bicycling: rental bicycles are available from numerous vendors and can be delivered to the subject property.
As mentioned, The Park's main reception center, which is less than a mile from the subject property, is the gateway to 50 miles of historic "carriage roads" -- for bicyclists, the roads are safe, far reaching (connecting to every town and village on the Island), and offer sumptuous scenery.
-- kayaking: rental kayaks are available from numerous vendors and can be delivered to the subject property.
The subject property offers arguably the best kayaking location on the Island, the kayaks being launch-able from the backyard virtually on a whim.
Importantly, the subject property offers safe and easy access to the ocean, right from the backyard, via steps and a deck on the beach itself.
The property does NOT present to our guests terrifying and mortally dangerous cliffs -- nor certain-death surging waves and swirling undertows.
-- fishing: salt water and fresh water.
(Witch Hole Pond, near the subject property, is worthy of a capable fly fisherman.)
-- hiking and mountain climbing: the Park offers many mountain climbing opportunities ranging from "easy for almost anyone" to "not for the faint of heart".
-- jogging: the Park's carriage roads offer many stunning jogging routes.
One of the best is the 5.6-mile route (with optional extensions) around Witch Hole Pond, which begins within a mile of the subject property.
-- skiing: Mount Desert Island's 30,000-acre Acadia National Park is world renown for cross country skiing in visually spectacular surroundings during the holidays and throughout the winter months.
