The Bungalow on Lilac - close to UM & Downtown

Bedrooms 1
Half Baths1
Property type bungalow
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

1 Bedroom + Loft, 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps family of 4)

The Bungalow on Lilac is your best option for a furnished, medium term rental in Missoula! Whether you are a visiting professor, a student at Rocky Mountain School of Photography, grandparents visiting grandchildren, or an adventurer who wants to take the time to really explore beautiful Montana, you will find no better value!

Utilities are included, along with WiFi broadband internet, satellite TV, and a weekly linen service for sheets and towels. You have a garage all to your use and may store bicycles and recreation equipment. Secure off-street parking for two vehicles.

The kitchen is roomy and equipped for cooks. The neighborhood and recreation access is superior to all other furnished rentals in Missoula, quiet and friendly - the mountains come right down to the back yard. Everyone loves the upstairs loft, for play, computer work, naps and reading!

You will enjoy the patio in the garden, relax with a book and view. A gas Grill for outdoor cooking, and commuter bicycles with baskets are available for your around town use. The neighborhood school playground is very close by.

The nearest walking trail is the loop trail through Greenough Park. There are both paved trails and a footpath through the woods. This is great spring bird watching habitat along the riparian corridor. Drive north on Rattlesnake drive to the trail-head for the Rattlesnake National Wilderness Area, about four miles upstream from here.

Our guests are University faculty and visiting professors, business travelers, experienced fly-fishermen, University students and their parents, musicians, film-makers and writers. The Rattlesnake neighborhood is beautiful and peaceful setting in the mountains and river corridors and trail systems. You will gain the energy and rest you seek with vacation travel here in Missoula. Please read our posted Guest's Comments.

Mountain Line bus system with a downtown transfer station can be picked up near the corner just down the alley towards town. The University of Montana is just across the walking bridge over the river – just a short walk from here.

We have a solar-assisted on-demand gas-fired hot water heater. The evacuated tubes on the dormer roof collect heat from the sun, heat the glycol solution which transfers heat to the domestic water in the tank upstairs before passing through the Rinnai water heater. All water for the house is filtered through charcoal and then softened for all uses with a potassium salt – except the cold water faucet at the kitchen sink which is filtered but not softened. This water is excellent for ice cubes, drinks and coffee.

Abundant fresh organic produce, meats, fish and bread, and bountiful deli counter are found year-round at the Good Food Store. They also provide many gluten free foods. Along the way you’ll discover the Missoula Angler shop.

The southern boundary of the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area and Wilderness (RNRAW) is just four miles north of Missoula, Montana. The National Recreation Area (NRA) lies south and adjacent to the wilderness and receives heavy human use, but primarily in the South Zone, within about three miles of the main trailhead. Far fewer people venture into The Rattlesnake Wilderness which is in the more remote northern portion of the RNRAW. A road that is closed to public motorized use and that is used as a trail leaves the main trail head and goes into the National Recreation Area along Rattlesnake Creek along a cherry stem NRA corridor to within about three miles of a scenic Wilderness cluster of high alpine lakes. Near the NRA entrance at about 3,600 feet, the elevation rises to 8,620 feet on McLeod Peak and a picturesque mountain setting.

Guests who you may invite to join you may not exceed two. We ask that you register them with us prior to your arrival, and the duration of their stay, with our permission. We charge $25 per night for each guest.

We collect a $95.00 cleaning fee due when you arrive. Please leave the Bungalow and premises as clean as when you arrive. There may be new guests arriving at your departure and be mindful of their expectations as well. The cleaning fee, and the extra guest fee, will be taxable for the State Lodging tax added to your rental fee. Please call if you have any questions about our requirements.

About John Rohrer

Linda and I live in the house next-door and do all of the property maintenance and gardening ourselves. We both have professional backgrounds, Linda worked in the local hospital foundation office as a fund-raising officer and we love to attend all of the music recitals and public lectures at the University of Montana - just a 20-minute walk from our home. We are members of the Missoula Art Museum.

John Rohrer purchased this bungalow in 1983

Why John Rohrer chose Missoula

The Lower Rattlesnake neighborhood is walking and biking distance to restaurants, the University of Montana, Medical facilities, the vibrant downtown neighborhood, the City Library, and all of the walking-biking-hiking trail systems. The City bus-stop is a half-block from the door.

Everyone loves the feel of this neighborhood, the locals and the visitors.

What makes this bungalow unique

What a fantastic place for families! Our two daughters (8 and 3) loved the place, the kitchen is well-equipped for family cooking, and Lane and Linda were fantastic hosts. The list of great family activities is endless: hiking, farmers markets, parks (Caras and Bonner were our favorites), restaurants, kid camps (M.O.L.A.!), festivals, minor league baseball, etc. We lived here for three weeks in July and never lacked for fun things to do, all within walking/biking distance.

Lovely place to call home 💜

Stayed here for two months between things. Was such a clean and comfortable little house. My girls and I felt right at home. Lane and Linda were so kind and hospitable and the garden is one of the loveliest in Missoula. Highly recommend!!!

Friendly neighborhood. Beautiful location at the foot of the mountains yet still considered in town.

I may be biased because of the family connection and history, but this place is very special.

Nice comfortable stay in Missoula

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 stated for 6 nights in December. The bungalow is nothing special on the exterior, but on the interior it's nicer than we expected. The furnishings were nicer (higher-quality like in our home, cherry wood tables and chairs, leather recliner, nice rugs and artwork, even a live plant), the kitchen gear was thorough (all the tools a cook might need, microplaner, gas range, and SHARP knives), the flooring was wood and stone (and lineoleum upstairs), the furnace kept it warm on the snowy days, and the bed linens were of a good quality.

The good-sized second bedroom is upstairs in the what would be an attic space. The description calls it a loft, but I don't agree. A loft is a sleeping area without a door and usually without all 4 walls enclosing it. This has a regular closing door and all 4 walls. There's a simple half bath and a closet. It's a bedroom. Also, I found its mattresses to be more comfortable than the Queen-sized one in bedroom downstairs (which was a bit too soft for me, but others may like it that way).

The bungalow is well taken care of by its owners. And we greatly appreciated the pet dander-free home!

We would return again, maybe in the summer next time for a different season.

Wonderful location in Missoula

  • 5 of 5

We were there for 4 weeks. Great location in Rattlesnake area of Missoula. Great access to trails and parks, downtown, U of Montana. The home is well kept, clean and very comfortable. We really enjoyed our time there. I would highly recommend this property. They have everything you might need, including washer and dryer, bikes, helmets, lights, grill, etc. Just like home. We were honestly sad to leave as we had become quite fond of the Bungalow on Lilac:)

FANTASTIC experience!

  • 5 of 5

I recently had the pleasure of staying in the Bungalow on Lilac for several weeks. The pictures do not do this rental justice! The property is extremely well maintained and has infinite 'extras' such as a well stocked kitchen, gobs of reading materials, information pamphlets about everything and anything there is to do in Missoula AND surrounding areas, great parking, bike availability, close proximity to town, awesome comfy linens and terrific shower water pressure. Lane was a wonderful host and his recommendations of restaurants, hiking and biking trails were outstanding. For being a small bungalow the place felt very roomy and comfortable. The gorgeous flower gardens and the hens in the courtyard were a terrific bonus to top off our relaxing and adventuresome stay in Missoula. I will definitely stay here again if given the opportunity!
