Overview

About the property

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

'Cottage on the Point' is located on Lake Superior's grand Park Point beach with five miles of extraordinary sand. This historic home, built in the late 1880's, rumored to be a hunting lodge, is now completely restored. Remodeled and redecorated it is full of old Duluth charm and modern conveniences. The cottage is licensed as a vacation rental by the city of Duluth-permit #PL13-019

The cottage is three miles from the world famous aerial lift bridge and Canal Park activities. It is one and a half miles from the Park Point recreation area with sailing and boat launch facilities. The cottage is located in a residential neighborhood, with private beach access. Step back to a time when the pace was slower and relax in your own private beach cottage.

Park Point offers many wonderful activities and we are prepared to help you enjoy it with four kayaks, one aluminum canoe, two adult life vests and beach mats and towels. Come prepared to enjoy the sun, but if it should rain, you can enjoy the supply of videos, DVD's, games and books perfect for a relaxing vacation.

Don't miss a chance to rent this extraordinary home at a price below the cost of a hotel room or conduminum rental. You can have it all - three large bedrooms, large living room / great hall with gas fireplace, dining room, kitchen, laundry room, front porch, back porch, gas grill and of course the beach - all located in quiet neighborhood. It is the best Duluth has to offer and it is away from the crowds that are found at lakeside hotels and condumiums.

EXTRA BONUS: If you like psychological suspense novels, check out books by award winning author Brian Freeman (bfreemanbooks). Our historic beach cottage is featured in Freeman's third and fourth novels, featuring Jonathan Stride and Serena Dial. The forward reads: 'Much of this novel was conceived and researched in a rental cottage on Park Point in Duluth that bears suspicious similarity to the home now owned by Stride and Serena. Your can actually stay there yourself, or tour the home at cottageonthepoint.' Or just send in a VRBO inquiry now for your dates and see if you can enjoy this historic cottage for your vacation. Please note that this is a peaceful residential neighborhood. Loud parties and excessive drinking or substance use are not welcome.

About Pat Burns

The cottage was purchased as a personal residence. We converted it to a rental in 2005 and continue to give it the loving care it deserves. It is inspected and licensed as a vacation rental, meeting all requirements for your safety, health and comfort. Bill is a lifelong Duluthian and knows this area and the community extremely well. He is a great resource for information on this area as well as, the north shore, BWCA, and the Quetico. We love this area for the beauty and all the activites we enjoy - skiing, kayaking, biking, paddling and wilderness camping.

Pat Burns purchased this house in 1995

Why Pat Burns chose Duluth

We both love Park Point, and live next to the cottage. The beach is peaceful and very quiet. At times we are the only people in our area down there. It is in a residential area and not near public beach areas. The beauty and serenity are so soulful and breathtaking. It is a great place for renewing one's spirit.

What makes this house unique

The cottage is loaded with old world charm - from the carved mahogany pillars to the built in china cabinet and reading nooks by the fireplace. It simply forces a slower pace. The front porch catches cool breezes and a great place to start the morning with a cup of coffee and a good book, while the back porch and deck are perfect as enclosed play area and a relaxing place to grill dinner. We provide four kayaks for use by our guests that allows a paddle on Lake Superior to explore the beauty of the lake. All to give an unforgettable experience and vacation needed in this fast paced world.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Everything here is so comfortable and well thought out. I particularly liked the built in reading nooks near the fireplace. After years of renting homes around the midwest I would rank this amoung the best and look forward to a return trip this summer. Thank you for a restful break. The skiing at Spirit Mountain was good.

Very family friendly

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed with our 2 1/2 year old for three nights at the cottage. Having a toddler with a lot of food allergies make vacations tough. At the cottage, we have a HUGE and comfortable kitchen to make his meals and then walk to the beach to have fun. Pat is a great host and I would recommend the Beach Cottage to anyone.

Sparkling Clean Historical Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay! Very clean, with extra amenities that made us feel at home. Beds were amazingly comfortable, although the cottage is located right on a busy highway. Ongoing traffic can be heard right outside the master bedroom, but it did not keep us up at night.

Visitors stay on the 1st floor, which is sizable, open and has plenty of comfortable seating nooks. Even though we were all in one room, it felt like each person had their own space.

This cottage is located near the beach. Visitors should know that the highway/row of houses separate this home (from the beach) to the south. The owner's home and a brief walk/sand dune separate the home (from the beach) to the north. The owners built their home so that you walk under it en route to the beach. It really didn't bother us, but know that you are not looking at water until you walk there.

Owners are lovely, welcoming and they definitely respected our privacy. Knowing that we would arrive later in the evening, they made sure to turn porch lights on for us. Very responsive to emails. We've stayed in many vacation rentals and this location is definitely a clean, comfortable, well-located abode to host a family. Note: Highly recommend for anyone who needs to avoid stairs!

Owner's Response: Park Point has one street that runs the length of the entire sand bar that we are located on. It is a residential street and not a highway. There is no beach to the south, across the street. The only beach is on the north and you do not cross a street to reach it, but rather walk through the property and over the sand dunes to the beach. We are on a wide area of the sand bar and have five lots that is shared by the cottage and our home. This butts up against the five mile park that runs the length of Lake Superior along Park Point. A look at google maps will make this configuration more clear. The cottage has a large open great room, three separate bedrooms, kitchen, dining room, laundry room, bathroom, front porch and an enclosed back porch all on one level.

Awesome late winter getaway weekend for NCAA Quarterfinal game

  • 5 of 5

We decided to head up to Duluth to take in the Gopher Women's hockey quarterfinal game against the Bulldogs and made a weekend of it by staying at the Cottage.

It was perfect for our family of three. Charming and spacious. We enjoyed relaxing and being far enough away from Canal Park to enjoy solitude but close enough to spend time there when we wanted. Walking along the beach was brisk but beautiful in the winter weather.

The cottage was clean, spacious, had all the amenities we could ask for and more. The owner was easy to reach upon arrival when we had a question.

We definitely hope to return for a longer stay in the near future.

Great spot for a stay in Duluth

  • 5 of 5

We had four adults and two kids and this was a great size and layout. There is only one bathroom, but we didn't find that a problem for a short stay. It was well-appointed and had lots of nooks and crannies to provide space for people to hang out and read, play games, etc. We also appreciated the large porch for storing all our winter gear as we ventured from activity to activity. We didn't go to Canal Park at all, so perhaps missed some of the convenience of being on Park Point, but we liked it anyway. I asked my kids the best part of their winter break and they both said no question "our trip to Duluth"--even more than Christmas itself!
