Moorea's House of Peace

Bedrooms 2
Property type house
Minimum Stay 5 nights

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Sunroom, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Fare no Tehau means House of Peace. The home is owned by a Tahitian woman who lives most of the year in Hawai`i. Fare no Tehau is a home that is rented out to those seeking an authentic Tahitian experience with all the comforts of home. A thatch roof, beautiful native hardwoods and full sized, fully equipped kitchen with standard refrigerator/freezer, gas stove/oven together with utensils, plates, cups and glasses. Two full baths and comfortable beds will greet you. The home is located on the water side of the road, with a gorgeous orange/green mountain view, with two docks sitting on the marina, in an exclusive gated community on the island of Moorea: the Jewel of the South Pacific. Moorea is a five minute plane ride or twenty minute ferry ride from the capital city of Papeete.

The marina on which the home sits leads into the sparkling lagoon (a short kayak ride away) the neighborhood is quiet, a fine French restaurant is right outside the front gate of the community (a grocery store is right outside the other entry gate) and those who have visited most often say: 'we can't wait to come back!' The yard has papaya and lime trees, fishing is great in both the marina on which the house sits or in the lagoon. There are two boat docks at the house and a kayak is available for your exclusive use!

The home is on the northwest corner of Moorea island, the leeward and dryer side of the island. If you just want to get away from it all, this is the place to get to! Please google 'Fare no Tehau' for our other sites with more photos!

Peaceful, well equipped villa

  • 5 of 5

The villa is in one of the nicest areas of Moorea. There is easy access to the huge lagoon via the canal that the house sits on, with a tandem kayak provided. The lagoon features several little islands, or "motus," great for snorkeling or just paddling around in a kayak and looking at fish and coral through the glass-clear water. The house is well equipped, well furnished, and well kept, and features very attractive, distinctive woodworking. Bedrooms are spacious and equipped with mosquito netting. Numerous ceiling and floor-standing fans are available to keep you cool; we found nights to be a pleasant temperature. Javalana, the caretaker, was charming and available whenever we had questions. There are good places to eat nearby; we recommend Snack Mahana for the best grilled mahi-mahi you will ever taste. We would gladly return!

Absolutely wonderful

  • 5 of 5

We arrived @ the home in mid Sept.a dryer season. The weather was perfect the whole time. The home it's self is a work of was like staying in a gallery of sorts. My traveling companion is a fine furniture maker, as was my father. We were in awe of the woodworking details of this splendid home. The location is convenient. The lagoon is more than you can dream of .The kiacks are nice,we did trips every morning and loved it. The whale watching excursions are fab.Whoever built this house ,built it with pure love.Comfy and cozy....I did not get more than two bugbites over 2 wks.On the other hand, my older and apparently more tender friend definitely needed to use the bug juice(fair skinned)I turn brown as a berry quick,so was too tough for the buggers.I highly recommend a stay .If you are going for 4 stars get bilked at the hilton. If you want to mingle in style with the locals stay @ the House of Peace....Truely peaceful....and the trade winds blowing @ night are very sleep inducing ...and romantic. This house has very good karma.

Proximity to lagoon and great kayaking

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for 8 days. This house is well-equipped for a family or small group of friends. Everything you need for cooking, relaxing, etc.. It is a short kayak to Les Tipaniers beach and restaurant or short drive/ bike ride to Le Petit Village where there are a few touristy shops and eateries, and also the Intercontinental is close by if you want to go for a special meal or to watch Polynesian dancing. You can also walk to a small shop just outside the entrance to the neighbourhood (Magasin Tiahura), which has fresh baguettes twice a day, a small range of items, and very friendly and helpful owners.

The neighbourhood was not as luxurious as we expected, and some work was being done on the house which made the first impression a bit scruffy. However, the house was bigger than we expected and comfortable. If you are not interested in making the most of the kayaks, I'm not sure if this would be the house for you, as for us that is what made it special. So wonderful to be able to kayak out to the lagoon and swim with sharks and rays! In other respects the house feels a bit cut off. It is in a small, sleepy residential neighbourhood. We could not find the walking track to the lagoon that is featured on the house info, but did see a similar looking track which had been gated - I wonder if that was it? Perhaps the owner can clarify.

You will also need to be prepared with earplugs for the roosters and the sound of the wind blowing through the thatch roof. We really wanted to sleep upstairs (beautiful Polynesian/ Robinson Crusoe style room) but even with earplugs found it too noisy if there was any wind (plus the roosters!). The mosquito nets over the beds were useful and necessary. Our daughter loved her 'princess bed' with nets hanging over her. All the beds were really comfortable too. Everything worked fine in the bathrooms and kitchen and the dining/kitchen area was really cute. The garden area was pretty, and we enjoyed spending time on the patio area. It just needs to be tidied up at the front where there was a pile of rocks and building material.

The wifi and internet connection worked great and was really handy.

Overall we had a really enjoyable stay.

Beautiful relaxing home with unique features of the island.

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent 2 weeks at the house of peace, and we could've just moved in for good if we had it our way! The house was incredible, from the roof made of palms and wood from coconut trees throughout. The mezzanine upstairs was really cool-almost like a tree house! We spent most of our time on the back patio taking in the spectacular view of the mountain and lush landscaping in the neighborhood. Having the kayaks to get on the creek I'm the back straight to the lagoon was so much fun and the most convenient way to get there. The market was in walking distance where we got fresh baguettes, fruit and wine. Having a rental car is a must and allowed us to come and go to explore the island and go on excursions. I highly recommend this house for a couple or even a family. Hands down the best vacation we have ever had thanks to Ida and her husband sharing their charming house for us to enjoy. We can't wait to go back!

Beautiful and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at the House of Peace! The house was really beautiful, relaxing, and cool - even better than the pictures. Our favorite part was kayaking out the 'back door' every day. We went to the local motus (islands) for swimming and lunch - the water is the most beautiful in the world! Coco Beach on Motu Tiahura has fantastic food, although check the days/hours because it was not always open.

The house is very well-appointed - there are plenty of supplies for cooking, laundry, etc. It was nice to be able to do a small load of laundry with some items that needed to be refreshed. I also appreciated the substantial (and attractive) mosquito nets around the beds. Bugs love me, and I had several bites from staying at another property without nets. Surprisingly, we did not have too much of a problem with bugs when eating on patio each night, although we did make sure coils were burning at sunset.

FYI, the map on Homeaway showing where the house is on Mo'orea appears to be inaccurate (at least on my phone). The house is down the street from the Intercontinental Hotel as mentioned in the description and photos (just ignore the map). There is a small, but well-stocked market right outside the neighborhood, the Intercontinental is about a 5-10 minute walk, and the Petite Village is about a 20-30 minutes walk. We did not rent a car, which was okay for us, but note that Mo'orea has virtually no sidewalks. We rented a scooter one day at the Rent a Scooter in the Petite Village, which I would highly recommend (~5500 FP francs or $50 for 24 hours). It was a great way to tour the Island and also hit up the large grocery store near the ferry landing.

Thanks for hosting our lovely stay at the House of Peace!
