About Shelagh Whitney

In 1990 we built our 'dream cabin' in Hayesville, NC and drove north from Atlanta almost every weekend until our full time move the summer of 2001. Leaving the craziness of the city, but staying within easy driving range of its energy, turned out to be the perfect move for us. With so many friends visiting and wanting a 'piece of quiet' themselves, it was on to real estate in 2002 where I spend most of my time today... Except when Mike and I are at home, still loving our 'dream cabin.'

Shelagh Whitney purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Shelagh Whitney chose Hiawassee

'Fernleaf Cottage' was actually bought as our future retirement spot. Although we do love our cabin Mike and I both grew up around the Great Lakes and couldn't see ourselves without a water view when we truly do retire to the porch! Being a Realtor I always have my eye out for properties that are a great value, with a great location and view! There was just something about this property that grabbed me the second I walked in and I knew that we had to have it in our future.

What makes this cottage unique

While you are, literally, only 2 or 3 minutes to the marina, restaurants, the movies, shopping and town when you are on that back porch you feel like light years from civilization! That's what so many of our guests have said that one of them wants to relax, read and hang out while the other wants to go, go, go... NOW! Everything is so close they can do both but get back together on a moments notice, AND, when you are so relaxed that you forgot the hamburger buns, you're out and back in no time at all! Plus, the cottage is very cozy as it was decorated for kick back enjoyment but NOT from yard sales!

Guestbook comments from the owner

You certainly do have one of the best rental cottages that we've rented! Very comfortable. Didn't need any A/C and the heat at night was a blessing. So many good restaurants, shops and artists. The people are so friendly and eager to share their knowledge. Thank you Shelagh for always being just a phone call away and for sharing all the wonderful treasures on your shelves. Great library!

Wonderful quiet get a way.

  • 5 of 5

The home was spacious, clean and quiet. All rooms were comfortable. The screened in porch had birds entertaining us all day with their songs. I would not hesitate to return.

Great little getaway!

  • 5 of 5

The place was perfect for our short getaway. The screened in back porch was the most used room - morning coffee out there was so relaxing.

Waze didn’t like the address, but Google maps saved the day and we went straight to it in the dark.

All amenities were exactly as deceived and we could not have been more pleased. Mark this as a favorite!

Dream Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was exceptional. Everything we could possibly need was supplied. It is beautifully decorated and furnished with very comfortable furniture and decor. During the day we spent most of our time out on the beautiful screened porch either relaxing on the comfortable outdoor furniture or eating at the nice outdoor table. The living room furniture, as well as the beds were extremely comfortable. The linens were high quality and made me feel like I was at a 5 star hotel. Although the cabin is up on the mountain and seems like a quiet retreat in the middle of nowhere, it is actually just minutes away from anything you need as far as groceries, etc. We ate at very nice local restaurants that were just a few miles away, and there are also many fast food options available close by. If you are into mountain biking or hiking it is only a few miles away from Jackrabbit Trails in North Carolina. We will definitely be staying at Fernleaf Cottage on any future trips to Hiawassee.

Bigger than it looks

  • 5 of 5

This cabin is near perfect. From outside, it looks small, but inside, the living room, dining room and kitchen are spacious enough for adults, children and a pet to move around easily. Access from the main highway is steep but should be no problem for any passenger vehicle. The two bedrooms and bath and a half are of adequate size. There are no closets, but there are furniture pieces that supply ample storage for clothes, shoes, etc. The kitchen is well-equipped with a dishwasher, range, refrigerator and utensils for every cooking need. Thee is an automatic drip coffeemaker provided also. We stayed in late December, and the heat pump performed admirably in mid-twenty degree weather. We did not need the air conditioner. Three TVs with satellite service provided local channels, movies etc.

Although the cabin is located between Hiawassee and Young Harris, Georgia, and is five minutes from groceries, gas and restaurants, once you are inside the property the feeling is that you are in a remote, rural forest, far away from life's stresses. The view from the back screened porch is awesome, especially at dawn. There is no landline phone, but cellular service and wi-fi are both more than adequate.

If you are looking for a quiet, serene place to spend a few days or more, you won't find a better value than Fernleaf.

Beautiful location amazing view!

  • 5 of 5

I love this location as compared to where I was last year as I have the best of both worlds with the mountain and lake view. The rooms are exactly as described and shown as in pictures. The owner Shelagh was very responsive to questions and hospitable. Definite will be my choices of getaway locations again!

Wonderful little spot to spend a long weekend at!

  • 5 of 5

I am that user who never leaves reviews but I just loved this property. I took my mom for a long weekend and we both loved the house. The owner's were amazing and I was incredibly thankful they worked with me on adjusting our visit. I traveled to DC last week for work and my trip was due to end on Wednesday but I had to stay until Thursday night which is when we were due at the cabin. A quick email was all it took for us to advance my reservation by a day so we could still enjoy our getaway.

Mom and I both found the home to be very comfortable and although the weather turned rather cold I enjoyed snuggling with my dog Elvis on the screened porch each morning while watching the activity on the lake.

The home was clean and we had everything we needed. Since I was traveling with my mother I didn't want to be too remote and it was nice that this spot felt really private yet was close to the major highway and town. A couple of houses are above and below this house but that took nothing away from the views or the peacefulness. The living room furniture and beds were also very comfortable.

I hope we can return in the future and if you are looking at Fernleaf Cottage I highly recommend it.

Owner's Response: Sweet! Always happy to accommodate when possible and so glad you were able to enjoy your getaway! There really is something special about this little place, I always tell Mike we need to book it for ourselves!!! Totally get the security of knowing you are close to town but miles away in spirit! We would love to have you and Elvis and 'his Nana' anytime! Come back! All the best, Shelagh
