About David and Mary Horne

My wife and I have recently retired. We live in a small village called Littlewick Green, near Maidenhead, in Berkshire. It is the archetypal English village, with a cricket pitch, a church and a pub. We have lived there for 23 years; prior to that, we lived in Ealing, in West London. We have two children, both in their twenties. We both enjoy walking, and exploring beautiful countryside.

David and Mary Horne purchased this barn in 2014

Why David and Mary Horne chose South Hams

I first discovered Bantham and Thurlestone during a golf trip to the South Hams some 20 years ago, and immediately fell in love with it. It is designated as an 'area of outstanding natural beauty', which means that there are extremely strict regulations regarding planning permission for development. Bantham village is part of a larger estate, which is privately owned by people who are determined to ensure that the beauty of the location is maintained.

When we retired, my wife and I decided that we would like to buy a holiday home in the area. We were particularly interested in converted barns, so were delighted when one came onto the market. We immediately fell in love with the Coach House, and the beautiful, secluded and peaceful valley in which it is situated, and have taken great pleasure in restoring the property since we bought it in June.

What makes this barn unique

We would like you to share in the pleasure we have enjoyed in visiting this beautiful area, together with the house and the beautiful valley it is situated in.

Very relaxing and well equipped cottage in a great location

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely week long stay here; easy to find and a very short drive to Bantham beach which is beautiful and a great starting point for coastal walks. A very well equipped cottage with lots of little extras so don't have to buy lots of goods for just a week or lug the entire contents of your kitchen with you! With a young baby, was very handy having the washing machine and tumble dryer (no travel cot or high chair available, but knew this in advance so not a problem). Very comfortable beds and plenty of storage space; only criticism is would have preferred a stronger shower but still perfectly fine.

Would definitely recommend to friends and family and would not hesitate to come against once our boy's a bit older!

A delightful cottage in a quiet valley

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was thoughtfully kitted out - comfortable and homely. Primroses in the little garden and a babbling brook across the lane. We had been mildly concerned by the fact that a road ran around one side of the property, but it only leads to 4 or 5 holiday chalets (dead end) and it wasn't a problem at all.

You can walk from there (various routes) to Bantham - thoroughly recommend the Sloop Inn! Secluded valley - need to drive to Kingsbridge for supplies, but the Asda delivery van managed to find us!

We would definitely go back.

A great easter break

  • 5 of 5

This was a great place to stay. One of the best summerhouses I have stayed at. This converted barn is very spacious and cosy inside, has everything you need, good beds as well. Very clean cannot be faulted in any way, tastefully decorated. The barn is also situated in very quiet beautiful surroundings with good parking.

We loved the area; agree with other comments that its best to drive to beach, easy drive and parking is very reasonably priced. Fantastic walks all the way around the coast, we walked all the way to Hope Cove and back. Plenty of places to eat in Hope Cove as well. Hope you carry on renting this property out because we would very much like to come again. Thanks.

Beautiful cottage, well equipped, great place to explore from

  • 5 of 5

Really enjoyed the cottage, lovely and clean, well equipped, great place to explore the area from. Pretty setting, good instructions on how to find it. Wonderful beaches within a few minutes drive. Only negative is that it's a shame that it's not a place you can take walks from across country, you'd need to drive to areas, but there are fantastic beaches, crabbing, rock pools, great pubs and lots of family fun, all within 5-15 minutes drive. Highly recommended, beautifully decorated, warm and cosy, very welcoming, and nice owners who offer helpful advice.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review. For future visitors, it is actually possible to walk to Bantham without going down the road. This can be done by crossing the stream by the house, via stepping stones, and then walking to the top of the field opposite (we have the farmer's permission), before joining the footpath at the top of the hill. Using this route, the walk to Bantham takes about 40 minutes. However, our view is that it is better to drive to Bantham or Thurlestone and then walk from there, as the views are fantastic.
