The owners are a photographer/writer team who purchased the raw land to build Casa Chepito in the late '80s. They have worked for many national magazines including the New York Times, LA Times Travel & Leisure and Smithsonian, as well as the 'MTV Guide To Mexico.' After traveling all over Mexico they are very happy to get back to San Miguel.

Why ann chose Zona Centro
As journalists we have traveled throughout Mexico but decided San Miguel Allende was our favorite place because of its culture, history, people, natural beauty and climate. The historical monument in the high desert is amazingly beautiful, reminding many of Tuscany; but with the special warmth of the Mexican people. San Miguel somehow has a perfect symbiotic meld between the foreign and Mexican communities. Although a small town, as an art colony it is more sophisticated than many big cities, with a wide choice of art and language schools, many types of restaurants, a world class theater, and great shopping. And it is high enough in elevation that it escapes the heat and humidity of the coasts.
What makes this House unique
Although you may want to spend most of your time in town, the beauty of the countryside surrounding San Miguel can really be appreciated by bike. Because there are miles of dirt roads and single track connecting to town the mountain bike possibilities are endless. There are two front-suspended bikes at Casa Chepito for guests to use. The Jardin Botanico, a 60 acre garden bordering the spectacular gorge above town, can also be readily accessed for hiking from Casa Chepito. Free entrance & discount to special events with membership card, included in rental. The garden at the house is also a tranquil way to watch birds, read, or just relax in a hammock.

Pluses and Minuses
Overall, we had a good stay. The outside areas of the house are lovely--the extensive garden in the front, the outdoor balconies and rooftop space. The views of SM below and of the sunsets are spectacular. The location was great--a five minute walk downhill into the centro. We hired Lupe, who works for the owners, to cook several meals for us which were excellent and she herself is wonderful. Water in the showers was hot. Some minuses: We experienced many cold mornings and evenings but could not get the heaters to work. The owners were away and though they attempted to respond to the situation, the results weren't satisfactory. The kitchen cutlery and pots and pans were subpar. Some of the furnishings were pretty junky. Blankets on the beds were below hotel grade. Light bulbs were very dim so the interior of the house could feel dark. As always, these are matters of individual taste and expectations. We wouldn't rent there again but lots of people would be quite happy there.
Thank-you for your comments and we are glad you enjoyed the stay overall. When we left the heaters were working perfectly, as they were upon our return. We did send Lupe several times to show how to use the heaters (since SMA does not have city gas lines to homes, heaters are propane tanks). We also sent our plumber, thinking that they may be broken, but they were fine. However, we are planning to get a Rinnai wall heater which works with a remote. Many of the blankets are handwoven wool Mexican blankets. Much of the furniture is also traditional Mexican wood from our travels around Mexico. Since we cook and this is our second home, we feel the kitchen is well supplied with cast iron skillets, a Ninja juicer/blender, toaster convenction oven, good knives and cleavers, dozens of cook books, "Best Coffee Maker of the Year", etc.
Lovely grey water fed gardens
Very helpful and knowledgeable hosts. Unusual property close to center of town. Loved the architecture and visuals. Steep access could be daunting to some guests.
We had a wonderful 2 week stay at Casa Chepito. Jeff and Ann were very accommodating. The house was a perfect retreat after a long, hot day.
The house is always cool and I appreciated all the windows having screens to keep out the mosquitoes and bring in the cool, evening breeze. I also appreciated the big jugs of drinking water. I recommend the walk/ hike from the house to the botanical gardens. Views in the morning of the hot air balloons and sunsets are glorious from the rooftop deck!
This was a perfect setting for a girls' getaway to celebrate a landmark birthday. The house was beautiful and spacious, and had amazing views of the city and the Parroquia. A rooftop terrace, decks everywhere and surrounded by a beautiful garden, it was just what we were looking for. The only caution is that you need to be able to walk up the hill from the Jardin; it was pretty steep and can be a bit of a challenge. Ann and Jeff were wonderful hosts, and we definitely recommend!
Single-track heaven for Mountain Biking, 60 acre Cactus Garden 5 minutes away, and two mountain bikes are provided with the house.
