In 2004 we retired and moved to Hawaii to build our dream cottage. We found this amazing property in the rainforest, in the town of Volcano. We created a private drive into the property so that we could build our cottage right in the middle of the huge fern trees. This is the only dwelling on this property and is very private. You can not see any other homes from the inside of the house or sitting out on the lanai. When we were building and creating Hale Mauka we focused on every detail. We made sure the deep soaking tub had a huge window for that rainforest view. The bedrooms have large windows to bring in the beauty of the rainforest. Hale Mauka was built with love and creativity. We love sharing our second home with guest from around the world! We Welcome you to our Hale Mauka.. We hope you enjoy our Hale as we do.. We are now building a second home in South Kona, so we are just moments away if you need help with anything.
Diana Varney purchased this house in 2004
It is Enchanting, amazing and peaceful and romantic and close to everything on the Big Island. It has everything you will need.
The National Park is so close you can visit anytime you want! Cooking your own meals at home and having kayaks and bikes and snorkel gear you don't have to rent. It's all at your fingertips. We have it all!!
This was an outstanding property. The house looked very nice in the pictures but the reality was so much better. It was warm and inviting, comfortable and quiet. If you are going to be touring the Volcano you really couldn't be better located. You are an easy 5 minute drive from the entrance to the park. Be sure to take advantage of this location and see the volcano during the day and at night. The Thai Thai restaurant in the village of Volcano is very good and well worth visiting. Hilo is also an easy drive. Once you are in Hilo it will help to have an idea of where you want to go and what you want to see. Perhaps the worst part was that the house is so comfortable and inviting you had to work to find a reason to leave. Then you remembered there was a volcano 5 minutes away.
We walked into Hale Mauka, and my husband exclaimed "Way to go Honey!" From driving into the secluded driveway, til the moment we had to leave, we loved everything that this vacation home offered. Our teenage son appreciated his own bedroom, and the beds were heavenly! The tall ceilings, open spaces, screened in, and non-screened in lanai's were amazing, and the privacy was very comfortable. We did hear dogs barking in another yard at times, but it really didn't bother us at all. It was the only sound we ever heard in this paradise, so I think that's why we noticed!
I honestly can't say enough about this house. We would stay here again in a heartbeat, and wish we could take it with us on all of our vacations! Yes, it was THAT great!
Staying this close to Volcano Nat. Park is wonderful. You can visit at night and have a very short ride back. This is a fun and inviting place to stay. We did some eating in and found whatever I needed to make our meal. We did not need the fireplace but it's handy if you get a real cool night. I find Diana and Rob to be helpful with ideas for a fun trip. This is our 2nd stay here. Love it!
We wanted to stay in a rain forest and this home delivered. This property is a lush piece of paradise. Quiet and serene. It had bikes, kayaks, snorkle equipment, boogie boards that saves on rentals.
It was minutes away from Volcano National Park which has hiking and sights galore. The owners where helpful and had everything set up to ease into a peaceful vacation. The cottage style home was welcoming and comfortable. Diana and Rob had lots of information at the house of things to do and were available by phone to answer any questions.
If you want the best of both sides of the Big Island, plan to rent this home for a few days to explore the east side of the island without rushing through a day trip from Kona (about 2.5 hours away). The volcano at the National Park needs to be seen at night to experience the beauty of the fiery activity in the crater. It was minutes away to view the volcano and come home and relax. If one likes to hike, it is a must to explore the park over multiple days.
Volcano Village is minutes away and has restaurants with four and five star ratings from Yelp. Hilo was about 35-40 minutes away with quick access to lot of adventures there. If we return to the Big Island, we will stay here again.
Diana and Rob, Mahalo.
Comfortable home very close to Volcano National Park. Easy to get to. Very private. Lots of windows looking out into the rainforest. Nice furnishings. I would just suggest better silverware and more dishes. Other than that the stay was perfect.
This is a great house very well equipped in the most lovely rain forest.
Close to the park and not a far drive from Hilo and other attractions.
Look forward to the our next visit!!!!
