In 2004 we retired and moved to Hawaii to build our dream cottage. We found this amazing property in the rainforest, in the town of Volcano. We created a private drive into the property so that we could build our cottage right in the middle of the huge fern trees. This is the only dwelling on this property and is very private. You can not see any other homes from the inside of the house or sitting out on the lanai. When we were building and creating Hale Mauka we focused on every detail. We made sure the deep soaking tub had a huge window for that rainforest view. The bedrooms have large windows to bring in the beauty of the rainforest. Hale Mauka was built with love and creativity. We love sharing our second home with guest from around the world! We Welcome you to our Hale Mauka.. We hope you enjoy our Hale as we do.. We are now building a second home in South Kona, so we are just moments away if you need help with anything.
Diana Varney purchased this house in 2004
It is Enchanting, amazing and peaceful and romantic and close to everything on the Big Island. It has everything you will need.
The National Park is so close you can visit anytime you want! Cooking your own meals at home and having kayaks and bikes and snorkel gear you don't have to rent. It's all at your fingertips. We have it all!!
We absolutely loved our stay at this beautiful home! The home was well stocked and the owners were very friendly and helpful. We were only a couple of minutes from the national park and also a few very good restaurants. Especially loved Thai Thai. We enjoyed the Bird Park Trail and it was only a 5 min drive. We followed the owners advice and swam with turtles at Richardson black sand beach. The home has windows everywhere for bird watching on the property. I also loved the soaker tub which was very nice on cooler nights. Kilauea was amazing at night. Our time here was incredible and we will definitely stay here again when we visit.
Comfortable home very close to Volcano National Park. Easy to get to. Very private. Lots of windows looking out into the rainforest. Nice furnishings. I would just suggest better silverware and more dishes. Other than that the stay was perfect.
This is a great house very well equipped in the most lovely rain forest.
Close to the park and not a far drive from Hilo and other attractions.
Look forward to the our next visit!!!!
We loved this house and I wish we had stayed more than three nights! The giant fern forest is right out of Jurassic Park - the birds and landscaping are so peaceful. The temperpedic mattress is the best night's sleep I had on the island. The kitchen is modern and well-stocked, the grill worked great and the little furnace fireplace warmed the entire house (including the bedrooms) quickly and efficiently.
I have to admit that, having really bad allergies, I was concerned about staying in the forest. So many other houses in this area received poor reviews because of mold or mildew caused by the constant damp air. I was so happy to find this house perfectly clean, no mold or mildew smell at all! The owners take excellent care of the house! It's amazing really. We have such terrific memories from our dinners and evenings spent here. It's also 10 minutes from the main park entrance and we were able to watch sunset over the boiling lava in the crater both nights while we were there. Terrific!
Our stay at this great cottage was perfect! It had everything we needed and was so close to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park which was the reason for our trip. The cottage is nestled in the rainforest and very private. Would definitely recommend this cottage to anyone traveling to the island!
We loved our time in this beautiful home. The location is super convenient – just a couple of miles outside the park. The cottage is thoughtfully furnished with everything you might need. The beds are super comfortable. And we absolutely loved birdwatching from the front porch!
We also appreciated Diana's patience with all of our questions before we arrived.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers free guided tours through the park and Lava tubes. There is so much to do and see in the National Park. We have two kayaks, and there is a great place in Hilo to Kayak. There is a beautiful Natural soothing Volcanically heated pool 35 minutes from Hale Mauka. Five minutes from the heated pool is a vast area of interconnected tide-pools for endless snorkeling possibilities. There are many Waterfalls in the Hilo area.
